La construcción del monumento fúnebre fue encargada al escultor italiano Rinaldo Rinaldi por el hijo de Bernardo, Demetrio O'Higgins para albergar los restos del prócer en el Cementerio General, luego de que fueran repatriados desde Perú en 1869. Este mausoleo, construido en mármol de Carrara, fue inaugurado en el patio de los Presidentes del Cementerio General el 13 de enero de 1869.
El monumento y los restos de O'Higgins fueron trasladados al subsuelo del complejo arquitectónico del Altar de la Patria en 1979, y se mantuvieron ahí hasta el 18 de octubre de 2004, cuando fueron llevados a la Escuela Militar durante la erradicación del Altar para la construcción de la plaza de la Ciudadanía. El 10 de marzo de 2006 fue inaugurada la cripta remodelada de O'Higgins en la nueva Plaza de la Ciudadanía, y fueron sepultados los restos de O'Higgins nuevamente en el monumento fúnebre. Esta nueva cripta, a diferencia de la anterior, está abierta al público y contiene una pequeña exposición con la historia militar de Chile, a modo de línea temporal.

The construction of the funeral monument was commissioned by the Italian sculptor Rinaldo Rinaldi by Bernardo's son, Demetrio O'Higgins, to house the remains of the hero in the General Cemetery, after they were repatriated from Peru in 1869. This mausoleum, built in marble Carrara, was inaugurated in the Presidents' patio of the General Cemetery on January 13, 1869.
The monument and remains of O'Higgins were moved to the basement of the architectural complex of the Altar de la Patria in 1979, and remained there until October 18, 2004, when they were taken to the Military School during the eradication of the Altar for the construction of the Plaza de la Ciudadanía. On March 10, 2006, the remodeled crypt of O'Higgins was inaugurated in the new Plaza de la Ciudadanía, and O'Higgins' remains were buried again in the funerary monument. This new crypt, unlike the previous one, is open to the public and contains a small exhibition with the military history of Chile, as a timeline.

The crypt below the cathedral is quiet, dark, and peaceful. Most tourists seem not to know about it, or at least not how to get to it, judging by its emptiness compared to the jam-packed cathedral.
