Beach Life, Rethymno, Crete, Greece
I so enjoyed my week long trip to the beautiful island of Crete in Greece back in April 2019 (seems like a lifetime ago now). I recently came across this image and it reminded me of that wonderful morning spent in Rethymno where the sun shone and the skies never looked bluer.
I arrived at the Venetian harbour at 6.30am to photograph the lighthouse at sunrise (7.10am), and it was a lovely sunrise and as Rethymno is such a lovely city, I opted to stay on and shoot the beach until mid-morning.
One of the things that I love about the beaches in popular tourists destinations abroad is that there is an awful lot to photograph, with so many different subjects on offer. I settled on this beach hut complete with the palm tree and just as I had set up, two chaps walked down and started getting out some cleaning equipment. I don't mind admitting that initially I was cursing them under my breath for getting in my shot but as the minutes rolled by, I saw them as a great opportunity to capture them in action.
I did not want the conventional shot of two guys washing down the hut so I opted to set the shutter speed to 20 seconds with a Kase 10 Stop ND filter attached and the effect was exactly what I was wanting. A creative image of the guys going about their business while being completely unrecognisable and I love the ghostly effect that the filter has allowed me to get.
What are your thoughts? Hit or miss? I would be interested to know.
As for Crete, I first visited the stunning island back in 1999 and returned in 2010 and again in 2019. There's a quality about the island that draws me back time after time and I seriously enjoy the scenery, the people, the harbour-lined cities that allow you to sit there with a coffee and watch the world go by.
Then there are the White Mountains that divide the north of the island from the south in the west of the island and at 8,000ft, they are covered in snow until late spring (hence the name) but wow, it is sure a spectacular drive.
Crete is a place that I might run a future workshop there, perhaps in April 2022.
