Design Guidelines: Does Creativity Have a Place in the World of Formula?
7/10/12
Join hosts Saxon Sigerson, AIA; Kris Barkley, AIA; and Arturo Levenfeld, AIA; for a casual evening of discussion centered around the topic of design guidelines.
Codes have a long history of shaping the built landscape, going all the way back to the Greeks and beyond. We accept their existence and, for the most part, work within their limits. But when the word ‘design’ is added to their title, the ego antennae of architects start to wiggle . . . a lot. (We don’t like some “document” intruding onto the gorgeously expressive, soft lead diagram of our latest creation.) Can we find examples of design guidelines that span the range of successful results to less-than-stellar outcomes? Our open forum discussion is intended to explore these questions and others in our continuing Architecture Matters series.

In a bizarre twist of fate, creativity was, at times, actively discouraged during my childhood. I find now, at 38, that I am taking up hobbies that ordinarily people pursue as kids or teens.
This is one of those hobbies, a tiny model that I am painting with a whimsical little pattern. It just needs a topcoat.
Photo was shot with a lensbaby + macro, through the front of a 50mm lens.

It all lies in those creative hands to deliver a capuccino with a girl on surface when he knew a girl had ordered it!
This is a wonderful memory from "The Chiba Floral Museum"
in Mihama-ku, Chiba City, Japan.
Here is maritan cat!
There was a craft area and an exhibition of lovely dried flowers. I had a chance to make this tile using the lovely flowers that they provided. It was such a fun and creative time.
Students used the engineering design process to create an object out of cardboard focusing on the principles of STEAM and our first quarter standards.
