The College of Liberal Arts at Temple University proudly announces a handful of newly renovated “smart” classrooms for the Fall 2012 semester. These rooms, in addition to being refurbished with fresh carpeting, lighting, blinds, and oversized white boards, have been upgraded with a number of technological advances. Students and faculty assigned to the new classrooms will notice new podiums, projectors, screens and control systems.

To jump! Leaving one’s shadow on the floor
Like Peter did, and never to recede,
Sailing to Neverland, drifting ashore
Wide open wings our arms, our spirit freed.
In dreams, we always fly. I breaststroke fly
Floating across the air in swimming kicks:
I jump and find myself up in the sky.
Following clouds and resting in time’s nicks
I do not grow up: I look up and down
Staring at faces and at shrivelled skins.
Sometimes I shudder with the saddest frown
To my own image that is not my twin.
My shadow lies across the floor: a thimble and a thread
Are in my hand to stitch it up. I think I’ll fly instead.

Are you a rap genius?
Students enrolled in ENGL 203: Becoming a Rap Genius studied the art of lyrics in rap music. By using the crowd-sourced annotation site genius.com, students drew parallels and compared works by traditional writers, like Zora Neale Hurston and Ralph Ellison, to modern artists, including Jay Z, Kanye West, and Nicki Minaj.

Tough having a bad cold is not disaster
I wonder if a cold may lead to blindness:
The colours and the forms are made of plaster
An object to its twin missing its likeness.
My mind is numb, and so my eyes and ears.
I am a shape of white elapsed flesh,
I touch my face while it disappears
My hair entangling on my head a mesh.
I want to have a fever, stay in bed,
Because someone will bring me a orange crush
Then putting her sweet hand on my forehead
She will tell me: “Rest, don’t read… and hush”.

You had to rest and heal; next days were not for school.

They jumped into the pool, and it was madness:
She, naked and scaled, he bristled green.
Their beauty was astounding, they were ageless.
Their faces were of gods, they looked serene.
He enfolded her white body in embraces
That were obscene; she tried so hard to free
Herself from the strong arms, meanwhile the faces
Stayed calm and smiling. It was too weird to see.
Holding the nymph on his green chest and grinning
He watched her melt and slowly disappear.
And I, the spring - her soundless screaming hearing -
I took her in. The water was all clear.
And when he became water, I kept them both deep down
Because they’re gods, and passion and fear will never drown.

On Friday, the College of Liberals Arts welcomed the class of 2016 to Temple University at the Freshman Convocation assembly. More than 600 incoming freshmen gathered to hear words of encouragement, advice and wisdom from Dean Teresa Scott Soufas, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs Jayne Drake, and fellow CLA students.
Two outstanding CLA students addressed the freshmen. D’Juan Lyons, a senior majoring in Spanish Linguistics, emphasized the importance of taking advantage of resources and opportunities here at Temple University. He challenged fellow classmates to avoid shortcuts and to go forth on their new journey “wholeheartedly and with full force.” Speaking from experience, political science major Grace Osa-Edoh shared three powerful lessons with CLA freshmen. Grace encouraged her classmates to “take it one step at a time, be ready to adapt to move forward, and ask for help along the way.”
The College of Liberal Arts wishes all of its students continued success. As Vice Dean Jayne Drake said, “enjoy and embrace your time here at Temple University."
