The Indian was the double-tongued fiend
While Technicolor cowboy was our man.
We did not know the enemy, by then,
Trustful we watched the movie as it began.
We lived in black and white, as children do
“The sheriff will shot dead the bad outlaw”.
The hero, fair and strong, for what we knew
Would have the farmer’s daughter, and the squaw.
Then we knew better, but it was too late.
We found new myths and pictures, and new heroes
Revealing to ourselves what desecrated
The story of a nation smashed to zero.
Our fathers taught us legends, allowing us to see
Only what suit the story, and hiding the enemy.

I just noticed that my grade school writing teacher improperly used a question mark.
Her comment is a statement of fact. She wonders. It's not a question.
It's a miracle that I can use any punctuation at all!

On Friday, the College of Liberals Arts welcomed the class of 2016 to Temple University at the Freshman Convocation assembly. More than 600 incoming freshmen gathered to hear words of encouragement, advice and wisdom from Dean Teresa Scott Soufas, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs Jayne Drake, and fellow CLA students.
Two outstanding CLA students addressed the freshmen. D’Juan Lyons, a senior majoring in Spanish Linguistics, emphasized the importance of taking advantage of resources and opportunities here at Temple University. He challenged fellow classmates to avoid shortcuts and to go forth on their new journey “wholeheartedly and with full force.” Speaking from experience, political science major Grace Osa-Edoh shared three powerful lessons with CLA freshmen. Grace encouraged her classmates to “take it one step at a time, be ready to adapt to move forward, and ask for help along the way.”
The College of Liberal Arts wishes all of its students continued success. As Vice Dean Jayne Drake said, “enjoy and embrace your time here at Temple University."
Students in Professor Meagan Cass’ Creative Writing, Publishing, and Community course were given traditional greeting cards and asked to reimagine the cards and then redesign them. The assignment was to help students see the ways in which traditional narratives of gender, class, and race are built into society.
Dorothy Chan
The Creative Writing Program in the Department of English at ASU presented a reading and book signing by two of its stellar alumni: Dorothy Chan (MFA 2015) and Dana Diehl (MFA 2015).
About the Authors
Dorothy Chan is the author of Revenge of the Asian Woman (Diode Editions, Forthcoming March 2019), Attack of the Fifty-Foot Centerfold (Spork Press, 2018), and the chapbook Chinatown Sonnets (New Delta Review, 2017). She was a 2014 finalist for the Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowship, and her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Academy of American Poets, The Cincinnati Review, The Common, Diode Poetry Journal, Quarterly West, and elsewhere. Dana Diehl is the author of Our Dreams Might Align (Splice UK, 2018) and TV Girls (New Delta Review, 2018). Her collaborative short story collection, The Classroom, is forthcoming from Gold Wake Press in early 2019. She earned her MFA in Fiction at Arizona State University and her BA in Creative Writing at the Susquehanna University Writers Institute. She has been an artist in residence at the Sundress Academy for the Arts, Signal Fire, and the Rutgers Camden Summer Writers' Conference. She lives and works in Tucson.

To jump! Leaving one’s shadow on the floor
Like Peter did, and never to recede,
Sailing to Neverland, drifting ashore
Wide open wings our arms, our spirit freed.
In dreams, we always fly. I breaststroke fly
Floating across the air in swimming kicks:
I jump and find myself up in the sky.
Following clouds and resting in time’s nicks
I do not grow up: I look up and down
Staring at faces and at shrivelled skins.
Sometimes I shudder with the saddest frown
To my own image that is not my twin.
My shadow lies across the floor: a thimble and a thread

Are you a rap genius?
Students enrolled in ENGL 203: Becoming a Rap Genius studied the art of lyrics in rap music. By using the crowd-sourced annotation site genius.com, students drew parallels and compared works by traditional writers, like Zora Neale Hurston and Ralph Ellison, to modern artists, including Jay Z, Kanye West, and Nicki Minaj.

Tough having a bad cold is not disaster
I wonder if a cold may lead to blindness:
The colours and the forms are made of plaster
An object to its twin missing its likeness.
My mind is numb, and so my eyes and ears.
I am a shape of white elapsed flesh,
I touch my face while it disappears
My hair entangling on my head a mesh.
I want to have a fever, stay in bed,
Because someone will bring me a orange crush
Then putting her sweet hand on my forehead
She will tell me: “Rest, don’t read… and hush”.

Two sisters: one is squat and very smart,
The other, tall and lean, is somewhat best
When kept well guarded, “’cause she can be hurt”
The younger (and the stronger) would suggest.
Being the eldest, 7 is esteemed
To be the one who has to keep an eye
On 4. No one has ever dreamed
It is the opposite, for 4 is to rely.
Together, they are meeting Uncle 10
Who has to stay at home with Auntie 11:
He is the one who knows exactly when
She began to behave like little 7.
And 11 and 7 - one old, the other young -
Speaking different languages, still use the same odd tongue.
