My hometown of Lismore has been devastated by two floods this year, with more rain to come. The effects of Climate Change are manifesting before our very eyes and there can be no doubting the need to alter the way we live.
A Three Toothed Orchid / Neotinea (formerly Orchis) tridentata in the evening light of a woodland meadow. One of my favourite orchids and a wonderful find ...
A Snakes's Head Frtillary / Fritillaria meleagris, its frost laden head bathed in the early morning sun ...

A false sense of security is like papier-mâché in so far as it gives the appearance of being solid, yet isn’t. It is something that helps us to feel emotionally better, in the short term, that doesn’t actually address our underlying problems.
An obvious example might be the use of clothes, make-up or tattoos to decorate our body to give the impression of being cool or together – when in reality we’re feeling extremely vulnerable.
Less obvious examples might include convincing ourselves we know more than we actually do, or believing in something that isn’t real. Creating an intellectual or moral high-ground for ourselves provides an impression of being secure and doesn’t require emotional honesty or anything real.
Like a mask these are things we can ‘put on’ to give an appearance of emotional confidence, yet genuine confidence has no need of hiding.
True confidence is the courage to be seen for who we are. To be seen not to know. To have faults and foibles. To have a mask that is cracked.

In these days of doubt and frustration with our own species, it helps me to remember the world is indeed a beautiful place.
A dream of a wonderful summer meadow provides a backdrop for this Chalkhill Blue / Polyommatus coridon.

An old definition of hope is ‘a feeling of trust’ - a faith in a better outcome. It is the potential for us to finally arrive somewhere more comfortable or fulfilling.
Somewhere safe.
Hope also embraces terms like aspiration and ambition. It is a forward-looking word that affords us the luxury to plan and dream.
Hope is an important quality to maintain in our lives as without it there is only fear and despair.
When we lose hope, we lose the chance to climb or to reach for something.
We lose our capacity to trust in the future.

While working together in a friend's pool, Hannah and I were fortunate enough to have a late afternoon storm come over and the surface of the water was covered in rain drops. As always, Hannah worked hard to stay underwater while maintaining her grace.
