Balkans Rail Trip, Autumn 2013 - Day Five

Class 661s are still to be found in Serbia being part of the large fleet of General Motors built for the Yugoslavian Railways during the 1960s and 1970s. Nowadays the allocation acquired by ŽS in Serbia has been whittled down due to cutbacks in services and lack of funding to keep the fleet maintained. Most are kept back for freight with an allocation based here at Niš. At the time of writing (October 2013) passenger work for the class has been reduced to one train each way per day on the non-electrified line from Niš to Dimitrovgrad on the Bulgarian border.

Seen in one of the platforms at Niš station on 27 September 2013, 661116 is on a train of tanks.

My photoblog: frozenfortunes.blogspot.com

This was taken this weekend at home when I was too lazy to venture out for a photoshoot. We (We here includes my wife) had taken out our camera to capture a spider in its web but it proved too complex with the lights being a bit too harsh and the spider being too small.... After repeated tries, we decided to go to the 2nd floor open terrace to see if there is anything interesting there. The sun had just started going down and the decision to capture some urban sunset shots was very natural.

The building here is an apartment complex opposite to our house and the lines were playing tricks with my eye on whether there was any tilt with the photo. I checked with the lines feature of photoshop to make sure there is no tilt but the optical illusion is still there........

The National Museum of Iceland’s permanent exhibition, Making of a Nation - Heritage and History in Iceland, is intended to provide insight into the history of the Icelandic nation from the Settlement to the present day.

The aim is to cast light on the Icelanders’ past by placing the cultural heritage preserved by the National Museum in a historical context, guided by the question: What makes a nation?

The exhibition includes about 2,000 objects, dating from the Settlement Age to the present, as well as about 1,000 photographs from the 20th century.

The exhibition is conceived as a journey through time: it begins with the ship in which medieval settlers crossed the ocean to their new home, it ends in a modern airport, the Icelanders’ gateway to the world.

Greetings, collectors! I am post-party and pre-airport, so I'm going to keep this last dispatch from the West Coast pithy. That's fine though, since today's edition from super-genius designer Matt Jones speaks for itself. (He really is a super genius! Ask anyone who knows him.)

Matt's edition, Get Excited and Make Things is certainly not the only response to the iconic Keep Calm and Carry On poster, but in my opinion it is the very best one. It's a sentiment I agree with wholeheartedly, and a perspective that I exhort you all to adopt as your mantra of our new era.

It's easier than ever to submerge oneself in gloom, doom and hand-wringing, but resourcefulness, innovation and opportunity abound. I've never seen much point in wallowing in the suckitude, I mean rrrreally: enough already! What are you going to DO about it? Because you can do something, and more importantly: you should.

Matt's print pithily embodies the attitude I aspire to live by and look for in others. I look forward to living with his bold reminder, and hope you will too. Should you need further encouragement to possess such inspiration, consider this: the profits from this edition will benefit Creative Commons, an organization most worthy of your support.

I have lots of stuff to tell you about, but no time to do it — the party report will have to wait till tomorrow's dispatch. For now, I'm going to tend to my packing and round up the amazing 20x200 crew that made the party — and so much more — possible. We've got a flight to catch!
