Gannet Week: Day 4: After committing to a lifetime relationship, our frisky gannet couple Grace and Waldo take a honeymoon to the edge of the rookery, where they engage in a cringy public display of affection.

One more gannet photo; this one a close-up of a pair performing their courtship/pair-bonding display.

RKO_0855. Not the best shot but I like this spectacle moment in the courtship proces.

Least Terns

Not the best quality photo as it was very overcast and misting but wonderful to see.

Early summer is such a fun time at Sandy Point State Reservation. There were no piping plover chicks yet when I went earlier this month, but the least tern courtship rituals were fun to watch!

Male and female Common Kingfishers. Another one from the amazing moment last weekend when the female had caught her own fish - and then the male (on the right) landed next to her - trying to offer her his fish.

For a moment she didn't seem sure what to do, but then swallowed hers and accepted his gift.

This pair of Mute Swans repeatedly performed a courtship routine, alas not quite in perfect unison.

It was a privilege to watch these great crested grebes as they performed their courtship ritual. Amazing to witness.

This is first time I've captured the delightful behaviour of this hoverfly species. The males hover above the seemingly oblivious female as she feeds. It's possible that one of the males has already mated with the female and is protecting his genes by preventing any other male mating with her too.

Two great crested grebes (Podiceps cristatus), performing a short courtship display on Watermead Lake.

Over the past few days I've been watching Ruby-throated Hummingbirds at the local park. During my observations, I've seen one of the hummingbirds fly at a high rate of speed, climbing straight up into the sky and then come zooming down and then shoot back up again forming a large U-shaped figure above the flower fields. It keeps repeating this for several cycles. I've come to learn (through Google) this is the male putting on a show for the female. If the female is interested, she assumes a submissive (seductive) pose and the male comes in closer to check her out.

As March is approaching the cardinals are starting their process of courtship. The males will sing loudly during courtship and defend their nesting territory. This guy sat on the pine branch and sang his little heart out. A few years ago we had one male that spotted himself in our windows and he was convinced that a rival was trying to take over his territory. He pecked at his reflection in my windows for weeks. It was not easy to discourage him. If you go to my Cardinal album you'll find him looking at his reflection in my window.

Finally caught a pair of Great crested grebes doing their courtship dance this afternoon though only just found a clearing through the reeds
