Great Blue Herons doing their courtship dance. I have never seen them so elegant. At first I thought they were going to fight but instead they greeted each other with wings sweeping the water, ruffled feathers and synchronized walking- heads high. Just amazing to watch.

Image taken at Switherland Reservoir in Charnwood. I had never witnessed the Male Mandarin Courtship Display before and it was beautiful to see, the male extends his head up and down continuously while making a very soft call to his mate. Unfortunately the Female showed no interest at all in the Males attempt's to woo her.

Aulacorhynchus albivitta

(Southern Emerald toucanet / Tucancito Esmeralda)

The male (left) collected the berry in his beak and then presented it to the female (right) who has just received the present.

Like other toucans, the Southern Emerald Toucanet is brightly marked and has a large bill. The adult is 30–35 cm (12–14 in) long. The sexes are alike in appearance, although the female generally is smaller and slightly shorter-billed.

The Emerald Toucanet is a generally common in humid forest and woodland, mainly at higher elevations.

Female monarchs do not have to wait long at the nectar bar for a potential suiter to come along and sweep her off her wings. More often than not, there are more suiters than their are available females.

Have a beautiful day and happy snapping.

The Green Heron (Butorides virescens) is a small heron of North and Central America. It was long considered conspecific with its sister species the Striated Heron (Butorides striata), and together they were called "Green-backed Heron". Birds of the nominate subspecies (no matter which taxonomic arrangement is preferred) are extremely rare vagrants to western Europe; individuals from the Pacific coast of North America may similarly stray as far as Hawaii.

The Green Heron is relatively small; adult body length is about 44 cm (17 in). The neck is often pulled in tight against the body. Adults have a glossy, greenish-black cap, a greenish back and wings that are grey-black grading into green or blue, a chestnut neck with a white line down the front, grey underparts and short yellow legs. The bill is dark with a long, sharp point. Female adults tend to be smaller than males, and have duller and lighter plumage, particularly in the breeding season. Juveniles are duller, with the head sides, neck and underparts streaked brown and white, tan-splotched back and wing coverts, and greenish-yellow legs and bill. Hatchlings are covered in down feathers, light grey above, and white on the belly.

The Green Heron's call is a loud and sudden kyow; it also makes a series of more subdued kuk calls. During courtship, the male gives a raah-rahh call with wide-open bill, makes noisy wingbeats and whoom-whoom-whoom calls in flight, and sometimes calls roo-roo to the female before landing again. While sitting, an aaroo-aaroo courtship call is also given.

I was lucky to observe and photograph Bald Eagles Courtship for the first time, Courtship is a time to develop and strengthen the pair bond, or form a new one. Scientists have observed some mating behaviors on wintering grounds, but have also seen males and females start courting in breeding areas.

Bald eagle pairs engage in a number of courtship rituals as they build their bond. The most famous and recognizable of these rituals is the "cartwheel courtship flight," this involves pair of eagles which will fly up high, lock talons and then get into a cartwheel spin as they fall toward the ground. This is nothing short of a visual delight, seeing it was amazing and being able to take few shots to share is a bonus.

Bald eagle population in Alberta is thriving, large number of eagles are wintering in Canada.

Displaying Crested Grebes at Carr Mill Dam, St Helens, UK.

During the courtship, each bird will dive and resurface carrying a piece of foliage which they will then 'present' to their mate.

A rare sighting is the exquisitely graceful courtship dance of cranes. It did not last long, but I lucky to glimpse a few moves.
