July 19, 2007. Courthouse in downtown Jasper, GA. The county is currently debating whether or not to remodel or replace this building.
I wonder why it wasn't taken down and placed where the bell is down at Ft. Steuben. they should swap the bells. The first courthouse bell should be down with... well... the courthouse.

Tyler, Texas has had seven courthouses and each of these county seats has been authentic architectural expressions of their generations. The most grandiose and well built of them was the four-story sixth Smith County Courthouse which incorporated the eclectic styles of Beaux Arts and Neo-Classicism. Specially selected Elgin brick was used in construction which heightened the textural effect of the façade and was used to form pilasters along the sides of the building. There were projecting facades on all four sides crowned by highly decorated pediments and sustained by colossal Greed decorated columns. The roof, covered with red terra cotta tile, was surrounded with a pronounced cornice providing a unifying classical element to the entire structure. The center of the roof was crowned with a polygonal dome, which all four sides held a clock six feet in diameter. Atop the dome stood the Goddess of Justice, an eleven-foot copper figure, which is now stored in the Smith County Historical Museum. The whole square surrounding the courthouse was a very intricately landscaped garden accented with decorative lamps, benches and birdbaths.

"In 1874, the Georgia Department of Agriculture was established by Act of the Legislature with Thomas P. Janes serving as its first Commissioner, 1874-79.
Commissioner Janes, born 1823 in present Taliaferro County, (Formerly the eastern part of Greene County), moved to Penfield. There he attended Mercer Institute. In 1842 he entered Columbian College (George Washington Univ.), Washington, D.C., where he received his A. B. degree. Columbian College, Mercer University, and the College of New Jersey (Princeton University) awarded him A. M. degrees. In 1847 he was granted his M. D. degree from the University of the City of New York. A successful farmer and physician he was commissioned in 1861 as Assistant Surgeon, 16th Regiment, Georgia Militia.
He died at his home, "Redcliff Farm", near this site, in 1885, and is buried in the family cemetery four miles northeast of this marker. This marker was erected by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Historical Commission as directed in a resolution passed by the 1961 session of the Georgia General Assembly."

Petersburg Courthouse is a historic courthouse building located at Petersburg, Virginia. It was designed by New York architect Calvin Pollard and built between 1838 and 1840. It is a two-story, Classical Revival style brick building. It rests on a granite foundation and measures 57 feet wide and 93 feet deep. It features a pedimented hexastyle front portico and a double-tiered bell and clock tower modeled after the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens. Major work was performed on the structure until 1877 when extensive repairs and interior alterations were carried out. A 30 foot addition was constructed in 1965. During the Siege of Petersburg, Union troops used the tower for a sighting mark and spared the structure from the bombardment.

Both sides relied upon the clock in the tower as an accurate timepiece. The Petersburg Courthouse houses one of the five remaining hustings courts in Virginia and, for that matter, in the entire United States. These courts, the local circuit courts and the Supreme Court of Appeals form the judicial system of Virginia.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
