Anthony Lakes Mountain Bike Festival
Celebrating great mountain bike riding at the Anthony Lakes Mountain Bike Festival at Anthony Lakes Ski Resort in Baker County Oregon.
Anthony Lakes is known for great powder skiing with the highest base elevation ski area in Oregon, and is quickly becoming known as a premier destination for great mountain bike riding as cyclists take to the Nordic trails during the summer months. Anthony Lakes most recent addition has been the 2 ½ mile Broadway Flow Trail and the ability to offer lift served riding opportunities during key weekends of the summer months.
The Anthony Lakes Mountain Bike Festival is one of several Cycling events held each year in Baker County including the Baker City Cycling Classic stage race held each June. The Pike County Fair in Piketon opened in 1907. While the racetrack was primarily for harness racing, the first day of racing did include one race for local running horses. It is doubtful that these were Thoroughbreds, but until I can uncover more information on the history of racing at the track, I am going to leave this on my list of tracks that once hosted flat racing. The Pike County Chamber of Commerce has posted a 56-page history of horse racing at the track on their website. It is titled, "Bring the Hosses Past the Start in a Straight Line, Gentlemen" A Century of Horse Racing at the Pike County (Ohio) Fair." I only found reference to the single opening day running race in the article. You can find a couple of old photos of the racetrack on the Pike County News Watchman website.

The Federal style courthouse designed by C H McCauley was constructed between 1935-36 so folks didn't have to cross Gunter Mountain to reach the county seat of Guntersville.

The Westmorland County Show is one of the largest one day Shows in the Country and certainly one of the oldest, given that the Society was founded in 1799 and is still going from strength to strength 215 Shows later.
Voted by the Farmers Guardian readers as the 5th top Show and the only one-day show in the top 12!
The Westmorland County Show held on the second Thursday in September each year; attracts over 29,000 people. We pride ourselves on being a major livestock Show, with its heart firmly in agriculture. Sections include cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pigs, heavy horses, alpacas, dogs and poultry, as well as marquees for The Women's Institute, Learning for Life, Crafts from Cumbria, local produce Food Hall, Rural Crafts and over 350 trade stands. Not forgetting the very popular Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling. A colourful event, with many competitors competing in traditional costumes.

Today was a happy day for me! After first seeing a crab spider in June of 2007--a yellow goldenrod crab spider on milkweed--I've been looking for goldenrod crab spiders on goldenrod! Until today, I had only seen them on two occasions--both in Maine--once in 2008 & on two plants during our recent trip. This one was sitting right at the end of my driveway in Columbia County, New York, USA on August 27, 2010. I've put four photos of her up, to help you train your eyes to see crab spiders. I hope you'll check out all four. She was doing a great job of camouflage! This was my best view.
