Cashel Ringfort/Faerie Fort. May 27, 2012: Exploring the Irish Countryside in search of Megalithic Sites. Cavan County, Garvagh, Ireland. (c) 2012 - photography by Leaf McGowan, technogypsie.com. Description: Raised circular area (int. diam. 24.7m) enclosed by a massive stone wall. Within the thickness of the wall there is an external stairway at S comprising seven steps, and two internal stairways at NW and NE, both of which have been blocked up. A souterrain (CV004-016003-) entrance is visible in the external face of the wall at S. A largely blocked-up water conduit, which it is believed (Richardson 1938, 20, and local information) carried water to the site from a stream higher up on the hill, is visible in the internal face of the wall at S. (Milligan 1890-1, 580-2; Lowry-Corry and Richardson 1937, 163-4; Richardson and Lowry-Corry 1938, 21). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
