With their mission well ahead of schedule and Afghanistan?s essential Highway 1 reopened, the soldiers of the 1st Mentoring and Reconstruction Task Force, began the arduous 400km journey to their home base in Tarin Kowt.
The soldiers travelled from Zabol Province to Kandahar Air Field ? a journey that saw them utilising both of the bridges they had rebuilt. Whilst at Kandahar the convoy took the opportunity to refurbish essential stores before heading northwards to Oruzgan Province and their home in Camp Holland.
During parts of the journey Canadian, American and Dutch allies supported the Australian Troop movements.

This is one of the many roadside small jaggery making factories. They utilize the sugarcane to the last bits, first getting the juice and then burning the remains (the big heap lying in the background is crushed sugarcane being dried for making it fuel) in that furnance on the right. The juice is then boiled for hours, till it becomes the thick brown paste (that the man in the foreground is stirring), and finally the paste is dried and ground to make what you in the foreground.
Kind of a self-sustaining industry.
