Today is both the birthday of Bram Stoker who wrote Dracula and Vlad “The Impaler” Tepes on whom Dracula was based on.
The novel is of course pure fiction, the real hero who defeated Count Dracula was a brave sheep called Abrashaun van Helsing. He traveled all the way to Transylvania with his loyal but slightly foolish assistant Mr Jonathan “Pip” Barker.
When they arrived at the castle during a full moon (there was lots of howling going on) the doors opened wide and there he was evil Count Dracula. His cape flattering in the evening breeze. “I bid you welcome Sheep, may you enjoy your stay at Castle Dracula”, this dubious words of welcome were followed by a manic laughter.
Van Helsing knew of course how to defeat a vampire-duck (every self-respecting sheep does) so he looked at his assistant and said “Quick Pip, the garlic”. You can imagine how surprised he was when Pip handed over a bottle of Cinnamon!
“Oh dear...”. Luckily Van Helsing wasn’t easily disturbed when things didn’t go according to plan (do they ever?).
He quickly got out his rolling pin and thwacked the Count over the Head.
Phew...
Two entertaining scarecrows in the Devon village of Branscombe. One is based, it would seem, on Count Dracula, the other looks rather more glamorous! No prizes for guessing which one would most scare any crows although the birds may be put off by the smoke from the 'young lady's' cigarette!

In 1885 the Russian Schooner The Demeter was hit by a wild storm and ran aground in Whitby harbour on Tate Hill Sands. Mysteriously all the crew were dead including the captain who was lashed to the helm. The instant the Demeter ran agound a huge black dog was seen to leap ashore and run up the 199 steps towards Whitby abbey. The dog was known to be one of the many forms into which a vampire could transform itself. Bram Stoker's Count Dracula had arrived in England...

Dracula's Castle - The Legend
In 1897 Bram Stoker wrote a terrifying story about Count Dracula. A century after, there are still people who believe in it. Even researchers are trying to find out the truth about Dracula. All are trying to clear the mystery: was there or wasn't there a vampire in Transylvania?
How many of these fabulous stories are legends and how many say the truth ? Here is the legend about Dracula.
Stoker's story is based on the life of Vlad Tepes/Vlad the Impaler (1431-1476), a ruler revered by Romanians for standing up to the Ottoman Empire. Known as one of the most dreadful enemies of the Turks, Vlad started organizing the state and enforcing the law by applying death penalty and impaling all those he considered enemies: robbers, cunning priests, treacherous noblemen, beggars, usurper Saxons. In fact he fought against everybody who tried to replace him either by his step brother Vlad the Monk or by his cousin Dan the Young. The historians nicknamed him Vlad Tepes while people say he was Count Dracula because he used to sign with his father's name, Dracul "The Devil". Dracula is derived from the Romanian word for devil or dragon.
This word alone carries with it magic and mystery.
His castle is supposed to be Bran's Castle since its narrow corridors constitute a mysterious labyrinth of ghostly nooks and secret chambers easy to hide a "vampire".
The Dracula's Castle was built on the edge of the Bran Pass and nowadays lures guests worldwide who wish to partake in the legend of the Count Dracula.
Another round of halloween cookies, this time with a vampire theme. The lips are the only design I drew up myself, the other two are from embroidery/clip art sources.

Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula, his most famous and memorable role, can be seen at Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum on 42ed Street in Times Square. I still have not gone inside the Waxworks, but seeing figures like this really makes me want to visit! Every day, Madame Tussaud's puts one or two figures outside on display, so I have just seen that very select few.
