Sighișoara is a popular tourist destination for its well-preserved walled old town, which is also listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It's other claim to fame is that it is the birth place of Vlad III the Impaler, prince of Wallachia, the inspiration for fictional vampire Count Dracula.

Whitby Abbey and the Churchyard of St Mary's the Parish church of Whitby.
Both the churchyard and ruined Abbey as well as the the town itself are associated with the Dracula novel which was written by Bram Stoker following a stay at Whitby.
I have removed a couple of road signs from the shot as they rather spoil the atmosphere.

Slains Castle is said to be the inspiration for Dracula's Castle in Bram Stoker's novel. Bram Stoker used to holiday at nearby Cruden Bay and went for walks to the castle.
The castle was a home to the Earls of Errol (who were the chiefs of the Clan Hay) until the 1920s when the roof was removed to avoid paying tax.

... get ready to go to a Halloween festival. The evening is already drawing in, the pumpkin has put on its best face, Count Draculuis' teeth are sitting and the witch Barbaria has her new broom, the Nimbus 2020 with her ... 👹😲🐈🎃👻💀👺👾
(Halloween is actually not my festival. It was only introduced in Austria about 30 years ago by the economy and I find the saying "Trick or treat" rude, if not a little threatening. The Halloween photos I made it especially for my Flickr friends Connie from Northern Ireland and Jeanne from the USA, and I have to admit, I really enjoyed the creepiness !!) 😊
Whitby
Whitby Abbey was a 7th century Christian monastery that later became a Benedictine abbey. The abbey church was situated overlooking the North Sea on the East Cliff above Whitby, which was a centre of the medieval Northumbrian kingdom and at that time called Streoneshalh.
The abbey and its possessions were confiscated by the crown under Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries between 1536 and 1545.
The author Bram Stoker got the inspiration for his epic novel Dracula from the remains of Whitby Abbey, and the legend about the pale ghost of a lady who wanders in the ruins of the former monastery. The legend says that the lady was bricked up alive in one of the walls and that she was frequently seen in one of the crumbled windows.
In 1890 Bram Stoker learned about the real Vlad Dracula, Vlad III, also known as Vlad the Impaler, in the Whitby public library. He combined his newly discovered information with his ingenious imagination, it was then the legend of Dracula was born.
The abbey is closed until March, English Heritage are carrying out work on the site. There are however a few places that are just low enough in the surrounding wall where it is possible to get the odd photo.

Re-upping this because, even though EVERY feline is a masterpiece, this one especially so!
If you've ever wanted to be immortal but did not prefer to get bitten on the neck by a yucky human, you could always go the Count Catula route! Count Catula can be very playful and has a lot of fun purrs while he's turning you into a vampire! Highly recommended but his bookings are quite exclusive!

Whitby
It looks like evening but it is in fact morning. There was a mist coming off the land that was just starting to clear, but it was still obscuring the sun just enough to get this shot straight towards it.
At the top of the east cliff, above the east pier lighthouse and pier extension you can see the remains of Whitby Abbey and St. Mary’s Church over on the far right.
It is easy to see how Bram Stoker’s visit to Whitby in 1890 provided him with atmospheric locations for his Gothic novel, and a name for his famous vampire, Count Dracula.
Whilst he was staying in Whitby, Stoker heard of the shipwreck five years earlier of a Russian vessel called the Dmitry, which came from from Narva. It ran aground on Tate Hill Sands below East Cliff, complete with its cargo of silver sand. With a rearranged name, this ship became the Demeter from Varna, which carried Dracula to Whitby with a cargo of silver sand and boxes of earth.
During the ships journey to Whitby, the log charts the gradual disappearance of the entire crew, until only the captain remains, tied to the wheel. As the ship runs aground below East Cliff on 8th August, a large dog jumps from the wreck and runs up the 199 steps to the church, and from this moment, things begin to go badly wrong. Dracula has arrived....

Created for Smile on Saturday - Lips. Found this little Count Dracula Duck at Five Below yesterday. I thought he was so cute and had great "Lips".
Whitby’s Parish Church, St. Mary’s, high on the East Cliff was founded in 1110. Some parts of it date back to Norman times, the early 12th Century. It has been modified and extended over the centuries without being completely rebuilt. There is a mix of fact and fiction in the Graveyard. One tombstone close to the Church is Humpty Dumpty. It is not the egg but a canon of the same name. Folklore also suggests that Tom Thumb is buried here but time has worn away inscriptions so the mystery continues.

Don't think I'd be comfortable having this portrait on my wall...
Now, before anyone comments on that: yes, I did try to use the Nexo shield for his teeth, but I didn't like the look of them, so I decided to replace them with something smaller. It's not like I haven't used them as teeth already anyway in my Goomba, where I think they were a much better fit.

Our seventh 'World of' jigsaw, this time the theme is Dracula. The full-size guide poster includes an explanatory text about the characters in the Bram Stoker novel, which I suppose could save you reading the book!
I must say I'm always impressed by the piece quality and overall presentation of this series.
Complete.
