Full-sun lighting conditions were harsh at times in the Chicago Botanic Garden, but occasionally, when clouds obscured the sun, I’d take the opportunity to capture soft flower portraits, as in this Cosmos Sulphureus surrounded by tiny white flowers that I used to demonstrate shooting through techniques to create a soft bokeh.
Common Name: Sulphur Cosmos, Yellow Cosmos, or Orange Cosmos
Scientific Name: Cosmos sulphureus Cav.
Family: Asteraceae (Sunflower family)
Description
Flower: Bright golden-yellow to orange petals with slightly ruffled edges, radiating around a central cluster of darker orange disc florets. The petals often have irregular margins and a silky sheen, which is visible in your photo.
Leaves: (Not visible here, but typical of the species) — deeply pinnate, fern-like foliage.
Stem: Slender, usually green, flexible, and can grow up to 1–2 meters tall.
Size: Individual blooms are usually 5–7 cm (2–3 inches) wide.
Blooming Season: Summer through fall (June–October in NYC).
Habitat: Native to Mexico and Central America; thrives in poor soils, full sun, and warm climates.
Widely cultivated as an ornamental.
Pollinators: Very attractive to bees, butterflies, and other insects.

Cosmos belongs to the family Asteraceae, a broad family of flowering plants that includes more than 20,000 species. There are 20 species of cosmos, including the North America native Cosmos sulphureus and the popular garden flower Cosmos bipinnatus. Also known as Mexican aster, common cosmos plants will grow as an annual plant in all regions.
Many cosmos flowers sport lacy foliage similar to ferns or asparagus that is beautiful in its own right. Petals of single varieties surround a small yellow pollen disk with a simple ray form; double varieties may resemble little carnations. A wide range of color options is available for the gardener, including all hues of pink, red, yellow, and orange. White and picotee colors are also available.

Taken at Hama-rikyu (Hama Detached Palace) Garden, Tokyo. Yellow cosmos (cosmos sulphureus) is now in full bloom. These girls seemed to have been on their way to Tokyo Bay Fireworks Show on that day via the garden.
A group of Japanorama's students were down in my neighbourhood yesterday, by the Keihin Canal in Tachiaigawa, shooting a group workshop with a model. I had some time to shoot some pics of the orange Cosmos flowers which are currently covering the banks of the canal. Beautiful. The bokeh on this old 85mm f/2 AiS lens is a bit hard-edged, as the lens is old and it green-fringes when it is wide-open. But, pretty nonetheless.
