Taroko Gorge is an impressive 19-km-long canyon, situated near Taiwan's east coast. The area of the gorge is also identified as Taroko Gorge National Park.
Taroko Gorge began as coral deposits deep under the sea. Under pressure from geological forces, the coral was transformed into limestone and then marble, schists and gneiss. Five million years ago, as Taiwan was lifted from the sea by the collision of the Philippine and Eurasian plates, the gorge began to be formed. In essence, the upward thrust of hard rock, combined with the erosion of the soft layers from water and landslides left towering canyon walls to form the world's deepest marble canyon.

Madeira, the Island of sad cows
Where there is no level land there is no pasture, so Madeiran cows were always stabled on the steep slopes near the house where they were the most useful.
While driving the winding interior roads, you’ll spot sometimes one, sometimes several picturesque little white palheiros, or "cow houses", isolated high on the farm’s green poios. Normally, each square palheiro was used for one cow only, with the agriculture tools and the hay stored above the cow stall. The farmers built them so the cows would not stray, saving them from injury on the steep hillsides.
Inside, scarcely seeing the light of day, the incarcerated cows spent their entire lives providing milk for butter and cheese, and manure for fertilizing the crops, without ever fulfilling their gregarious nature. Hence, Madeira was named the Island of sad cows.
So obviously, these girls are amongst the lucky ones roaming freely... ;-)
