Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) forces our admiration. 500 years ago, he dared to demonstrate from astronomic observations and using the mathematical tools of the Maragha School (Iran) that the Earth and the other planets orbit around the sun. Human are no longer the centre of the Universe. It took more than 200 years for his church to admit it. This image combines a portrait of Copernicus pasted on a scan of page 10 of a facsimile of the manuscript “de Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium”, hand writing of Copernicus himself. No need to read Latin to get the message summarized on the figure. Also impressive are the evaluations of the revolution time around the sun of Saturn (30y) and Jupiter (30y). His assumption of circular orbits has of course limitations for the inner planets but the progress made was huge

Nicholas Copernicus Monument (1822 / 1945) by Bertel Thorvaldsen in front of the Staszic Palace (1820-1823 / 1946-50) seat of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Nowy Świat Street, Warsaw, Poland
Monumento a Nicolò Copernico (1822 / 1945) di Bertel Thorvaldsen di fronte il Palazzo Staszic (1820-1823 / 1946-50) sede dell'Accademia Polacca delle Scienze, Via Nowy Świat, Varsavia, Polonia
Pomnik Mikołaja Kopernika, Pałac Staszica, Ulica Nowy Świat, Warszawa, Polska
The story: The sculpture was carved by Bertel Thorvaldsen in 1822 and erected in 1833. Was destroyed by the German army in World War II after the Warsaw Uprising, probably melted and turned into tanks. After the war the original form of the sculpture was found in Denmark and the Danish government presented Warsaw with an exact copy of the original monument. It was re-erected on July 22, 1945.
The palace was damaged during the 1939 siege of Warsaw and nearly razed during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. In 1946-50 it was rebuilt in its original neoclassical form.
Copernicus Sentinel-1D has begun its journey and is preparing to leave Europe. It left Thales Alenia Space’s facility in Cannes on Monday, 1 September, and arrived the next day in Turin. From there, it will be flown on an Antonov plane to French Guiana on 10 September.
Sentinel-1D, part of the European Commission’s Copernicus programme, is designed to carry an advanced radar instrument to provide an all-weather, day-and-night supply of imagery of Earth’s surface.
It will be launched on an Ariane 6 in Q4 2025.

Not so sure as to why the flash made him look like a bukkake victim...anyways, that's horrible to think about.

Copernicus Crater and it's unique ray system is the target for this image. The crater rays spread as far as 500 miles across the lunar surface, forming a nebulous pattern. In multiple locations the rays of Copernicus lie at glancing angles, instead of forming a true radial dispersal. An extensive pattern of smaller secondary craters can also be observed surrounding Copernicus, and some of these secondary craters form sinuous chains in the ejecta. I reprocessed this image to enhance the ray system.
North of Copernicus lies The Montes Carpatus, a rugged mountain range that runs west to east. The western end begins in the vicinity of crater T. Mayer, and at the eastern extreme is a wide gap where Mare Imbrium in the north joins Mare Insularum to the south. Most of this range consists of a series of peaks and rises, separated by valleys that have been penetrated by lava flows.

Cope was a good boy through the whole thing; didn't try to escape once!
Because Kellie was coming to babysit The Boys as I was out of town, I decided that their bathtime was long overdue. It actually went far better than usual (they get a bath about every 2-3 months) since Brian wasn't around to be putting a video camera in their face. Copernicus only said "no" three times!

Hurricane Matthew left behind shocking devastation, and this map shows the scale of the destruction. The red dots on this map represent homes which were completely destroyed in the centre of Les Cayes, a commune with some 70 000 inhabitants. The map was produced by the EU Copernicus system, which is providing satellite images in order to help with the assessment of damage.
