That chain of volcanoes that made this island also stop the daily rain showers and misty breezes from reaching its leeward side. There’s a cultural shift as well, as evidenced by antique shops filled with blue glass and handpainted signs luring drivers up driveways to farms. There are coffee plantations out here, wellness retreats, and the ghost of Captain Cook rolling in waves somewhere downhill from Black Rock Pizza.
Hilo’s got its cluster of golden age hotels. There’s imperial resorts up past Kailua-Kona. A few self-styled hostels charge a premium for scabies and only book people with out-of-state IDs. Searches on the usual sites turn up spare rooms or condos scattered around charging hundreds of dollars for cleaning fees. Evan knows an old style side-of-the-road by way of Japan motel we could have stayed at for a couple of days, but my dumb-ass took a wait and see approach. We waited and saw that the motel was way booked by the time of my arrival. (Check it.)
