This little brass plane has a convex sole and blade, allowing for the accurate smoothing out of hollow wood surfaces.
Therefore, it is a perfect match for luthiers, who have to carefully chop fine shavings off the inner side of the top plate of a violin.
Hence the name of "Luthier plane".

I could not resist a close-up of this, I just like puzzling graphics, this one has an added bonus, when you rotate it, the metal scales go from concave to convex.

The Palazzo Carignano is a rather spectacular example of Baroque civil architecture, with its concave-convex facade, designed by Guarino Guarini. In the middle of the 19th century it was the parliament of the Kingdom of Sardinia.
The meniscus (plural: menisci, from the Greek for "crescent") is the curve in the upper surface of a liquid close to the surface of the container or another object, caused by surface tension. It can be either concave or convex, depending on the liquid and the surface.

Me Again Monday ~ something spooky
Well, I don't really think this is spooky, although some of you may. I'm working my way through the list of topics over at MAM. Another from the convex mirror, which I think in this one makes me look like a giantess, and conjures fairy tales in my mind :)

ENGLISH
The monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat is a benedictine monastery located in the mountain of Montserrat, in the Catalan region of the Bages, at 720 meters height of 720 on the level of the sea. It is a symbol for Catalonia and it has become a point of pilgrimage for believers and visit forced for the tourists.
The origin of the monastery is uncertain. It is know that in 1011 a monk coming from the monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll to be in charge of the monastery of Santa Cecilia, beign therefore the monastery under the orders of abbot Oliva de Ripoll. Santa Cecilia did not accept this new situation reason why Olive decided to found the monastery of Santa Maria on the place in which was one old hermitage of he himself name. As of the 1082, Santa Maria passed to have own abbot and let depend on the abbot of Ripoll.
This hermitage had become most important of all those that existed in the mountain thanks to the image of the Virgin who in her venerated from the 880. The monastery soon became sanctuary which benefitted to him, since the donations and received alms allowed him to be growing of constant form. At the end of century XII, the abbot runs asked for that he allowed himself to extend the community of monks to 12, required minimum so that abbey was considered. The following century was the one of the beginning of the fight of Montserrat to obtain its independence of the monastery of Ripoll. This independence did not arrive until the 10 from March of 1410 and was granted by Pope Benedicto XIII.
In 1493, Montserrat lost its independence again. King Fernando the Catholic sent to the monastery 14 monks coming from Valladolid and Montserrat passed to depend on the congregation of this Castilian city. During the following centuries the Catalan and Castilian abbots followed one another. That same year of 1493, the minimum friar Bernat Boil, before hermit of Montserrat, accompanied to Cristóbal Columbus in one from its trips to America which caused the expansion of the cult to the virgin of Montserrat in that continent.
19th century was specially tragic for Montserrat: it was set afire twice by the Napoleonic troops, in 1811 and 1812; and in 1835 it underwent the excloistration due to the confiscation of Mendizábal. The monastery was sacked and set afire and many of their treasures were lost.
The excloistration lasted little and in 1844 the life in the monastery recovered. The congregation of Valladolid had disappeared reason why Montserrat became independent again. The whole monastery had to recover since they had not been more than the walls. Since then the monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat has not let grow and at the present time (2006) it contains one of the best libraries of the country. The present congregation is formed by a hundred of monks. In addition, in the monastery the children reside who compose the Escolanía de Montserrat, considered the school of song of more antiquity in Europe since he was founded on century XIII.

CASTELLANO

I have upped the contrasts but nothing else. But, I like how some of them look as if they are concave and some convex.
