Once the former post office, this is one of three building(s) dating back to the colonial period.
The construction of this building commenced in 1916 and was completed in 1918. Situated in Gaya Street, it was designed and built under the supervision of Mr. J.W. Norman, Executive Engineer with Mr. Ong Seng Teck as the main contractor.
The building was first occupied by the Printing Office in February 1918 and formally declared opened by Governor A.C. Pearson on 16 March 1918.
At the ceremony, Mr. Pearson said “…the building is to be the best in Borneo and it reflected great credit on the designer, J.W. Norman”… thereafter Mrs Pearson inserted the paper that printed the first Herald from Jesselton.
The Printing Office occupied it until 1935 when they moved back to Sandakan. In 1936, it was then converted by the PWD to accommodate Offices of the Audit, Treasury, Bank and Posts.
During the Japanese Occupation (1942 to 1945), it was occupied by the Yokohama Specie Bank, Treasury and Posts. This is one of the three buildings which remained intact after the Allied bombing of Jesselton.
After the war, it was used for temporary shelter by Attorney General, Resident’s Office, District Office and Town Board in addition to those already there until they moved out in the 1950s with the exception of the Posts and Telegraphs.
In 1957, extensive renovation was carried out on the building.
The Department of Posts and Telegraphs separated in 1968 and the Post Office used the building until 15 September 1986 when they moved to their new premises.
It was gazetted as a historical building in July 1988 and today, it is the Tourist Information Centre.
