Continuing our look at Dwarf military units*, the Dwarven Bombard Squadron is a sight to behold. Powerful Dwarves, trudging along with cannons strapped to their backs. No wagons, no wheels needed.

The cannon units for other races are limited to somewhat level terrain for both travel and staging. Not so with the Dwarves. Your fortified city can suddenly find itself bombarded from surrounding mountain peaks.

With the added stealth and quickness of the Bombard troops, early warnings are almost eliminated and sieges can be set up and initiated with lightning rapidity.

Happy Miniature Sunday!

Continuing my exploration and celebration of small things with the patterns in this seaweed, left behind by the tide, at a beach near Batemans Bay, NSW. At Batemans Bay near where the sea meets the river, the seaweeds were extraordinary in variety and range. But I think this came from a different beach...

Note how the photographer has inserted herself into the picture with the shadow bottom right! (A typical shadow of a hand holding a small camera.)

Another perfect night to watch the fireworks over the Ottawa River. Saturday night was Portugal's show and it was a beautiful display of color and sparkles. This is the view from behind the Supreme Court. I am glad I don't have to decide who is the winner.

"I was continuing to shrink, to become...what ? The infinitesimal ? What was I ? Still a human being ? Or was I the man of the future ? If there were other bursts of radiation, other clouds drifting across seas and continents, would other beings follow me into this vast new world ? So close - the infinitesimal and the infinite. But suddenly, I knew they were really the two ends of the same concept. The unbelievably small and the unbelievably vast eventually meet - like the closing of a gigantic circle. I looked up, as if somehow I would grasp the heavens. The universe, worlds beyond number, God’s silver tapestry spread across the night. And in that moment, I knew the answer to the riddle of the infinite. I had thought in terms of man’s own limited dimension. I had presumed upon nature. That existence begins and ends is man’s conception, not nature’s. And I felt my body dwindling, melting, becoming nothing. My fears melted away. And in their place came acceptance. All this vast majesty of creation, it had to mean something. And then I meant something, too. Yes, smaller than the smallest, I meant something, too. To God, there is no zero. I STILL EXIST !"

CPKC 241 continues its charge northward on the Detroit Lakes Subdivision, originally the Soo Line's Winnipeg mainline, toward Thief River Falls and later Noyes at the international border seen here south of Winger in Polk County. Winger has a gravel road underpass at this location, which I had intended to include in the scene. However, the timing was tight, so I opted for this framing with the various prairie grasses and snow. Next time.

2 November 2020: Update on The Corona Pandemic – Despite that the virus continues to spread rapidly among the population across the whole country and just a day before the lockdown measures are due to come into force, a Shopping Sunday took place in Antwerp. Given the large number of shoppers on Saturday virologist, healthcare workers and everybody with common sense had high hopes that the event would be rained off or that people would simply stay away from the shopping streets. Unfortunately, we’ve seen the opposite. The city center of Antwerp was again extremely busy, and there were big queues outside retail outlets. Also, Police continued to be called out to close down illegal parties and gatherings. Incomprehensible! Belgium is not the only country that has gone into or is about to enter its second lockdown of the coronavirus crisis. Countries such as France are already in lockdown while England will go into lockdown from next Thursday. Our situation is much worse than the situation in Germany, France or England, nevertheless, a part of the Belgian population is unwilling to stick to the basic measures that have been put into place to curb the further spread of the virus and some politicians are shying away to drive compliance. This trail of grossly irresponsible behavior will, without a shed of a doubt cost lives. Meanwhile, we gave up on our multi-course family lunch on Christmas. Instead we are bracing for a dark and grey winter. Let’s hope that afterwards there will be many beautiful springs and summers to come. Today’s dark and grey picture was taken a couple of years ago in Damme – Damme, Belgium.

Continuing with posts from this past weekend... this was taken a little earlier in the evening while closer to Victoria Glacier (which you can see in the background). This small stream that feeds the lake and originates at the glacier usually remains open all winter and provides for some great compositional opportunities in the snow.

I had hiked past this area earlier in the day and had a few spots that I thought would make for good compositions if the light was right later in the evening.

What first motivated me to look for a composition at this point was the amazing backlighting near the glacier itself... unfortunately by the time I got set up I had missed the best light but still managed to get a decent shot facing in this direction... in fact I think it might be one of my favourite from the series in regards to composition. The light was continually changing due to cloud formations as well as the sun's relation to the horizon so as I mentioned yesterday... as long as you were on your toes and had compositions ready... the light would eventually cooperate if you waited long enough.

My journey continued from the fox to the eagles. Plainfin Midshipman are strange and interesting fish that live in deep water until spring, when they swim into the shallows to bear their young. The females lay their eggs and return to the depths while the male remains to stand guard. This takes place in the intertidal zone where they can withstand exposure to air during low tide, breathing through their skin. Males "sing" during mating season, which comes out as a low hum, perceptible to nearby humans. They also have photophores along their body which light up when they are in deep water to both help them capture food and possibly also camouflage them. Watching the Great Blue Herons catching one after another in the shallows demonstrated the survival challenge for these fish. Herons would start first in the morning soon to be followed by bald eagles, often hazing the herons who gave up their prey with loud and bitter complaint. It was quite a show. My objective, besides having a great time doing what I love and meeting lots of other photographers, was to capture bird to bird interactions. I was inspired by Mark Smith's photography, who sets the standard for such shots and was quite helpful. Check him out: photoworkshopsandtours.com/. Here are a few shots. I'll post a few more in another post and then make a gallery of my keepers for my website. Thanks for following the journey. Mike

The eruption of Etna continues with the sixteenth paroxysmal activity since last February 16. The 'live' event started after 11pm yesterday from the South-East crater with a lava fountain, lava overflows and the emission of an eruptive cloud about 6 kilometers high. The ash, blown by the wind, fell in a South-South-East direction and also on Catania causing the closure of a sector of the airspace and of the airport runway.

DAMAGE - And after a month of eruptions, the damage toll in the countryside on which ash and lapilli have poured up. "Damaged nurseries of plants and flowers, vegetables as well as citrus fruits scratched by the power of the sand - says Coldiretti after the new eruption with lava and ash from the South-East crater -. In the countryside there is a calamity with often irreparable damage to the crops to which in addition, the inconvenience for those forced to the extraordinary cleaning of the drainage channels or the cleaning of rural roads ".

"In many areas the earth has been submerged by a black blanket - he adds. To clean the structures and crops it takes time, water and the massive use of manpower. We are also facing changes in the volcano and, therefore, we must start also a new system of interventions that also protects agricultural entrepreneurs with fast and ad hoc rules ".

Continuing south in some nice late afternoon sun, NPWJ rolls through the cornfields in Newbury, as mountains in New Hampshire loom in the distance. Clarendon & Pittsford GP40-2 306 is providing the power on this trip, with eight cars bound for White River Junction trailing behind it. Despite a few setbacks, and delays, the crew will still make it to WRJ before sunset. where they will drop the cars in the south yard, and tie the power down by the station.

We continue our Malvaceae series with what may be the Hibiscus species most commonly used in gardens: Hibiscus syriacus. Originally from Southern China and Taiwan, it has long been planted in parks and gardens across much of Asia, and finally, in the 16ᵗʰ century, to Europe and beyond. It has achived this spread because, unlike most other Hibiscus species, which are of tropical origin, Hibiscus syriacus is a hardy shrub.

Beyond it's ornamental uses, the species' flowers, leaves and roots are comestible, different parts of the plant are used in folk medicine, the leaves can be made into shampoo, the fibres are used and the flowers have been used to produce blue textile dye.

Zaterdag 23 Mei 2020

Saturday 23 Mai 2020

Today Saturday, 2 Januari 2021, another transport with 2 new ICNG (IC New Generation) EMU passenger trains will arrive in the Netherlands - due to an accident, the Hengelo - Almelo section is unfortunately blocked and the transport can not be photographed.

My thoughts went back to the first transport of an ICNG passenger train to the Netherlands on May 23 2020 when I had the chance to photograph this transport in my backyard due to rail works between Baarn and Hilversum. To my surprise, photos of this day had not yet made my Flickr stream, lets get to work :))

There were also rail works between Dordrecht and Lage Zwaluwe, therefor few routes from Bad Bentheim (D) to the Rotterdam harbor were available - in the afternoon a RRF boiler train from Bad Bentheim to Ijsselmonde shunting yard was diverted , now routed via Deventer and Zwolle over the Hanzelijn to Weesp - from there it was possible to continue on its normal route.
