The "Ashburton Contingent" were a group of ‘merry-makers’ who holidayed together in the late 1920s – early 1930s. According to Ian Sherratt, ‘the up-to-date interior of the trailer had kerosene and butter box cupboards, and drawers holding all their cutlery, crockery and frypans. A tarpaulin was usually stretched over the back of the trailer and anchored to a nearby tree, giving protection while they dispensed cups of tea from a Primus stove.

26 September 2011. Um Kadada: Doctor First Liutenant Mohamed Ismad Anwar, member of the UNAMID Egyptian contingent based in Um Kadada (North Darfur), is examining a patient at the clinic of the team site. The clinic is basically for troops, but the medical personnel always see the local population if needed.

Contingent Number 135: "The Forbidden Fruits."
SBS blurb: Family and friends from a diverse range of ethnic, cultural and sexual backgrounds. As LGBTQI people of colour we are viewed as ‘Forbidden Fruits’ not only within our own ethnic communities but in wider society. Despite this, we are still proud of who we are and where we come from and believe that it is important to be able to live your truth, not only for yourself but for all of those who do not have the freedom and opportunity to be themselves. We hope to be an inspiration to them.
Following the return of soldiers, the remaining members of the 5th Victorian Contingent erected this monument to honour their fallen comrades. It is a secular memorial, with traditional funerary symbolism on an elaborate and Gothic scale. Four bronze plaques commemorate the soldiers and in part the text reads: 'Unveiled by members of the 5th Victorian Contingent VMR/ in memory of their fallen comrades in South Africa 1901-1902/ Honour the brave/ King and Empire/ Lest we forget/ AD 1903'. One face of the monument is oriented due west, as is common with memorials to lost soldiers.
The monument was originally constructed opposite the Victoria Barracks, on St Kilda Road, but was relocated in 1965. In 1911, it was decided that a memorial would be erected to all Australians who perished during the war; the Boer War Memorial is located nearby and now administered by the City of Port Phillip.
A contingent of about 200 gay and lesbians and their parents and friends followed the Aztec dancers along the parade route. At the end of the parade, the dancers continued dancing for 5 more minutes. After they ended, they walked over to the large gay/lesbian/friends/family group and started exchanging greetings via some special handshake...fist, fingers, tap your hadn over your heart. Very cool part of the parade.
