Here are some snap shots of this year's Academic Contest of the Grade 5 students. SFAMSC holds an annual Academic competition from preschool to grade 10 as an opportunity for students to further deepen their knowledge in fundamental subjects like math and science. These contests are designed to inspire students to study and enjoy the thrill of competition!
2 x 225t Towheads safely transported by Allelys and Osprey in a Multimodal land, Heavlift to barge, Sea and roro to land transportation operation from point of manufacture in Invergordon to final position for launch in Wester, Scotland.
A textbook Allelys and Osprey Multimodal operation utilising specialist Goldhofer modular axles, specialist ballast tractors, heavylift cranes, and specialist flat top barges.
Months of upfront marine engineering, heavylift planning and route assessments and preparations were required to ensure a smooth, safe operation. Detailed swept path analysis for the road move was undertaken, and overhead power lines had to be turned off and raised to allow safe passage. Telephone wires had to be lifted, street furniture was temporarily removed and even the top of a wall had to be removed!
La ricerca e l'Università italiane sono da sempre notevolmente sottofinanziate: l'Italia con lo 0.9% è ultima tra i paesi OCSE come percentuale di PIL speso per la formazione terziaria. Eppure, la legge 133 del 6 agosto 2008, invece di aumentare il sostegno ad una moderna Università pubblica, prevede che:
- nei prossimi anni venga assunto un solo dipendente ogni 5 che vanno in pensione,
- il finanziamento pubblico venga ridotto di circa un miliardo e mezzo di euro in cinque anni,
- le Università possano deliberare la loro trasformazione in fondazioni private, alle quali vengono ceduti gratuitamente tutti i beni (mobili ed immobili) degli atenei.
È evidente che questi provvedimenti non risolveranno nessuno dei problemi delle Università, mai seriamente affrontati dalla classe politica. In compenso, assesteranno un colpo mortale a coloro che riescono (nonostante tutto) a fare ricerca di alto livello scientifico e a fornire agli studenti una preparazione all'altezza dei migliori atenei internazionali. Infatti:
- solo pochissimi giovani potranno entrare nel mondo della docenza e della ricerca (universitaria e non: per gli Enti Pubblici di Ricerca è prevista una riduzione del personale del 10%), con ulteriore aggravamento della precarietà;
- professori, ricercatori, tecnici e amministrativi diminuiranno di numero e la loro età media aumenterà. Sarà quindi impossibile mantenere gli attuali livelli di ricerca e dei servizi e si dovrà ridurre l'offerta formativa (inclusi corsi di laurea, laboratori e dottorato) in quantità e qualità, con conseguenze a medio termine disastrose per l'innovazione e la crescita del Paese;
- con l'abbassamento della qualità didattica e l'impossibilità di assegnare tesi di ricerca, la preparazione degli studenti scenderà al di sotto degli standard degli altri Paesi e li renderà meno competitivi sul mercato del lavoro;
- la privatizzazione (tramite un provvedimento senza precedenti nel mondo) comporterà forti condizionamenti sia della didattica che della ricerca e naturalmente determinerà un forte aumento delle tasse universitarie.
Per questi motivi, studenti, dottorandi, precari, tecnici/amministrativi, professori e ricercatori dell'Università di Torino sono in agitazione contro i provvedimenti governativi contenuti nella legge 133, e hanno deciso di intraprendere una serie di iniziative tese a informare e sensibilizzare sulla questione tutti coloro che hanno a cuore il futuro del nostro Paese.

On October 31, 2007, thirty people arrived in Halloween costumes on Fountain Square for a costume contest. Representatives from Cappel's and the thrift stores of Goodwill and the St Vincent de Paul Society judged the costumes, choosing one winner in the categories of Most Creative, Scariest, Funniest, and Best Team Costume.

The 2nd annual cupcake contest was held last week at the Bristol Indiana Public Library, sponsored by Friends of the Bristol Library to help raise funds for library projects. A number of people participated by paying a $2 and bringing their entries to the library for the noon judging. Some others declined to participate in the contest, but donated cupcakes for the sale. Three local judges participated in selecting the winners. Connie Whitlow of Bristol won the traditional category/best tasting with her pumpkin with cinnamon cream cheese frosting cupcakes, and Tia Talbot of Bristol won the decorated category with her autumn lemon delights cupcakes. The winners were each awarded a silver spoon award, decorated with miniature cupcakes, made by library staff member, Miss Desi, and other prizes, including a cupcake print apron. After the judging the cupcakes were sold to the public.
