photo 1347 - GT-35 "Ferry" Story
On our return to St. Petersburg, Florida from a two-week 3,050 mile Journey
to Wisconsin for a family visit and an MGA Car Show in Delavan, Wisconsin,
we took the "avoid-the-interstates" route in our 1962 mineral blue MGA
roadster (top down all the way). We have a saying of our own when we take
MG adventure trips. We say, "It's the destination that gets us going, but
it's the journey that makes the memories!" Here's a tale which is a
memory-maker from this last journey in July 2010.
As we traveled homeward through the endless farms and fields of Illinois
(after a pleasant stay at the Best Western Raintree Inn in Effingham, IL),
Bert spotted a road on the map which crossed the Ohio River in the general
direction we were headed. It was marked FY in red. We were hooked! We
headed down to Cave In Rock, Illinois where we found FY meant a free ferry
trip across the Ohio River to Marion, Kentucky. During a short wait for the
ferry, we learned that there really is a Cave in Rock, a 55-foot wide cave
which has a notorious history as a hide-out for bandits, counterfeiters and
river pirates.
We boarded the barge/ferry with a dozen or so other autos and trailers and
were quickly delivered across the Ohio River to Marion, Kentucky in about 10
minutes. It was lots more fun than a bridge!
This is just one interlude that illustrates our slogan that ".the journey
makes the memories." We're already planning a 2011 Journey to Reno-Tahoe
via Route 50 across the USA. Of course, we'll be driving Mr. Blue, the 1962
MGA on that adventure.
The 2nd annual cupcake contest was held last week at the Bristol Indiana Public Library, sponsored by Friends of the Bristol Library to help raise funds for library projects. A number of people participated by paying a $2 and bringing their entries to the library for the noon judging. Some others declined to participate in the contest, but donated cupcakes for the sale. Three local judges participated in selecting the winners. Connie Whitlow of Bristol won the traditional category/best tasting with her pumpkin with cinnamon cream cheese frosting cupcakes, and Tia Talbot of Bristol won the decorated category with her autumn lemon delights cupcakes. The winners were each awarded a silver spoon award, decorated with miniature cupcakes, made by library staff member, Miss Desi, and other prizes, including a cupcake print apron. After the judging the cupcakes were sold to the public.
