Red Crowned Crane -
The red-crowned crane, also called the Manchurian crane, is a large East Asian crane among the rarest cranes in the world. In some parts of its range, it is known as a symbol of luck, longevity, and fidelity.
The Red-crowned Crane and Sandhill Crane are related; they are both members of the crane family (Gruidae), sharing ancient lineages, though they belong to different genera.
All cranes are omnivorous, per Johnsgard, the two most common crane species today (the sandhill and common cranes) are among the most herbivorous species while the two rarest species (the red-crowned and whooping cranes) are perhaps the most carnivorous species. When feeding on plants, red-crowned cranes exhibit a preference for plants with a high content of crude protein and low content of crude fiber.

I prioritised a trip into Glasgow last week over setting up my replacement PC as I just needed to see some real human faces. I'm still recovering but with the coming week looking unpredictably showery, it should afford me the opportunity to get my PC set up and to start to tackle the backlog of new photos. All being well and with all fingers crossed!

Sea lions are pinnipeds characterized by external ear flaps, long foreflippers, the ability to walk on all fours, short and thick hair, and a big chest and belly. Together with the fur seals, they make up the family Otariidae, eared seals. The sea lions have six extant and one extinct species (the Japanese sea lion) in five genera. Their range extends from the subarctic to tropical waters of the global ocean in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with the notable exception of the northern Atlantic Ocean.
Sea lions have an average lifespan of 20–30 years. A male California sea lion weighs on average about 300 kg (660 lb) and is about 2.4 m (8 ft) long, while the female sea lion weighs 100 kg (220 lb) and is 1.8 m (6 ft) long. The largest sea lions are Steller's sea lions, which can weigh 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) and grow to a length of 3.0 m (10 ft). Sea lions consume large quantities of food at a time and are known to eat about 5–8% of their body weight (about 6.8–15.9 kg (15–35 lb)) at a single feeding. Sea lions can move around 16 knots (30 km/h; 18 mph) in water and at their fastest they can reach a speed of about 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph). Three species, the Australian sea lion, the Galápagos sea lion and the New Zealand sea lion, are listed as endangered

Deux Chameaux de Bactriane, secteur de la Mongolie du Zoo sauvage de St-Félicien, 2230 Bd du Jardin, Saint-Félicien, Québec, Canada.
Le chameau de Bactriane (Camelus bactrianus), appelé aussi chameau à deux bosses (par opposition au dromadaire ou chameau d'Arabie) ou simplement chameau, est une espèce d'artiodactyles de la famille des Camelidae. Il est natif des steppes et des régions arides de l'Asie centrale. L'épithète spécifique bactrianus évoque l'une des régions où les chameaux domestiques étaient autrefois communément élevés: la Bactriane. Sa femelle est dénommée la chamelle et le juvénile le chamelon. Ce mammifère ruminant diffère du dromadaire par ses deux bosses dorsales graisseuses (contre une chez le dromadaire), par son poids et sa taille plus élevés, et par une fourrure bien plus abondante.
La constitution du chameau de Bactriane est bien adaptée aux conditions d'un climat continental extrêmement sec, avec des étés chauds et secs et des hivers rigoureux et enneigés. Ses particularités physiologiques et anatomiques lui permettent de vivre pendant un temps exceptionnellement long sans eau, et il se contente d'une nourriture grossière et pauvre en éléments nutritifs. Le chameau s'adapte très bien aux hivers rudes grâce à sa laine très épaisse. Cependant, il est très sensible à l'humidité, et ne se rencontre que dans les zones où le climat est sec.
Le chameau est depuis longtemps un animal domestique important dans beaucoup de régions d'Asie. Il est prédominant dans les steppes et les régions semi-désertiques d'Asie centrale, de Mongolie, et sur certains territoires avoisinant la Russie et la Chine. Différentes races de chameaux domestiques ont été développées. Le chameau peut être utilisé comme animal de bât ou de trait, il fournit aussi du lait, de la viande et de la laine.
Le Zoo sauvage dédié aux espèces de la Boréalie est constitué de deux parties. Une partie que l’on visite en se déplaçant dans un train grillagé qui permet de partager l’intimité de près de 1000 animaux vivant dans de grands espaces naturels. Une deuxième partie pédestre plus conventionnelle. L’ensemble du zoo propose une sorte d’intégration à la biodiversité boréale. Les animaux du Zoo sauvage vivent en milieu ouvert, très souvent en cohabitation avec d’autres espèces et dans des habitats qui ressemblent le plus possible à leur milieu naturel.
By now we’d been roaming the sands of Vestrahorn for at least a couple of hours. We’d stood on top of dunes, waiting for the moment as we attempted to catch the entire range with wide angle lenses. Unhappily, I’d just discovered that my polariser had cracked and crazed at some point earlier in the day, rendering itself almost completely useless unless I opened the aperture wide enough to let a bus through. We’d puzzled over the reflections on the rather too empty tidal lagoon that sits between the dunes and the Viking village at its base, wondering exactly where the water that supposedly replenishes it on a daily basis came from. After all, it was almost high tide and the incoming sea showed not even the faintest sign of sweeping in with a few thousand gallons of extra supplies to top things up. At some point in the afternoon we’d gradually wandered off in separate directions to focus our attentions on different subjects. I’d been to the shore and back twice, the second time earning a welly boot full of Atlantic Ocean for my troubles – although I’d have happily accepted double helpings and a second soaking sock in exchange for the results that were on offer. If by that time we’d packed up and headed to Hofn for a three course refuelling exercise we’d have been happy enough. As long as the fermented shark wasn’t on the menu. What’s all that about? I’ll have the salad with extra lettuce please.
But having ticked three large and urgent boxes with varying degrees of success, and with no real idea where Lee was, I decided to wander the short distance over the darkening black sand, where I then stood on top of yet another dune – just for the fun of it and to see what I could see. For a moment you just have to pause, take in the scene from your own personal grassy atoll, and pinch yourself. In fact for much of the fortnight I kept saying to myself “flipping ‘eck, we’re actually in Iceland!” The excitement at just being in this country never loses its lustre, and that’s not just because of the Goulash they serve at the Ice Cave Restaurant in Vik either. Don’t forget to top it up with as many free croutons you can without causing unnecessary embarrassment. As I watched the world for a few moments, enjoying the magnificence and contrasting the view to the big grey shroud that covered everything around me three years earlier, the shot before you began to take shape. The light was starting to intensify, as soft lilac blues stood out against the black sand and the golden grassy dunes. Silhouetted figures strolled silently at the water’s edge, some stopping to gaze out across the empty ocean before them in this dream filled landscape. It’s a place that draws many visitors of course, but even so there’s enough space to claim a dune for yourself without fear of being crowded.
And isn’t it helpful when the couple at the water’s edge are so considerate as to stand still for long enough to allow you to catch the movement of sky and sea and smooth away distractions? Obviously one or two other fun seekers in the scene had to be airbrushed for the sake of simplicity, but you can’t have it all without breaking a few eggs along the way. I even had to remove a tripod wielding tog, although in my defence he got the place to himself in another shot a few moments later, when the lovers themselves were unceremoniously removed. I’m sure the gaggle of clackers over to the right of us on the rocks at the edge of the beach were delighted that he was standing in the middle of their compositions, and I expect that there was more than a hint of content aware fill taking place in editing suites across the globe a few days later.
It was close to the end of daylight by now, and the group of raw files taken here make up the sixth of seven folders from Vestrahorn that day, in itself a reflection of the number of possibilities the place offers. Every direction in which you look finds you framing the scene as you try to isolate the compositions you know are lying in wait. It’s a place where your imagination can run riot, while you run from one place to another searching for your perfect dune shaped companion under the ever changing light. Even the ruler straight track from the beach to the café might find you muttering at passing cars under your breath as you try and get a clean long exposure in the moments before the purple dusk arrives. After all, what more could you want than a perfectly formed and grand yet pleasingly compact mountain range, standing over a volcanically charged black beach covered in swishy tufts of golden orange wherever you look? Overly popular? Yes. Photographed to the point of distraction? Very probably true. Utterly jaw dropping at first, second, third and fourth sight? Well, yes, absolutely it is.

The Vogue Theatre
(c. 1937) 75 Lakeshore Road East
This former Art Deco style theatre was equipped with 500 seats and the street-front was originally cream and white in colour. For 42 years it was one of the most popular theatres between Toronto and Hamilton. The first movies played were “God’s Country and the Woman” and “A Doctor’s Diary”. The theatre closed in 1979, with the opening of Square One’s theatre. The former theatre was transformed into a jewelry shop before becoming the Crooked Cue Restaurant and Billiards Lounge in 1997.

Bei Entwicklungszeiten über 10 Minuten können sich Snowballs bilden. Versucht man durch längere Belichtungszeit auf eine kürzere Entwicklungszeit zu kommen, verstärkt sich das Problem, falls die Überbelichtung dann schon über 2,5 bis 3,5 Blenden liegt. In solchen Fällen ist es erfolgversprechender, den Entwickler etwas fetter einzustellen, oder den Gehalt an Lith D zu reduzieren.
Hinweis zur Trocknung auf Sieben.
Dieses Papier ist relativ schwach gehärtet. Bei der Trocknung auf Sieben mit der Schichtseite nach unten kann es zu Schichtverletzungen mit punktuellen Siebmustern kommen.
Processing instructions.
Snowballs may form during development times exceeding 10 minutes. Attempting to achieve a shorter development time by increasing the exposure time will exacerbate the problem if the overexposure already exceeds 2.5 to 3.5 f-stops. In such cases, it is more promising to adjust the developer to be slightly richer or to reduce the Lith D content.
Note on drying on screens.
This paper is relatively weakly hardened. When drying on screens with the coated side facing down, the coating may be damaged, resulting in selective screen patterns.

My entry for the 9th les Archives de Mavrah (Mavrah's Archives) contest on Bionifigs.
What I read on him heavily made me think of the Alien, so I used it a my primary inspiration. The shaping of the torso was inspired by the Engineer's suit in Prometheus.
He uses his six arms as shields against elemental attacks, and as spears to destroy the Toa's lifestones.
