National Tramway Museum, also known as Crich Tramway Village, in Crich, Derbyshire.
George Stephenson, the great railway pioneer, had a close connection with Crich and the museum tramway follows part of the mineral railway he built to link the quarry with Ambergate.
The museum contains over 60 trams built between 1873 and 1982 and is set within a recreated period village containing a working pub, cafe, old-style sweetshop, and tram depots. The museum's collection of trams runs through the village-setting with visitors transported out into the local countryside and back.
In 1948 a group of enthusiasts on a farewell tour of Southampton Tramways decided to purchase one of the open top trams on which they had ridden. From this purchase grew the idea of a working museum devoted to operating tramcars. From the original group developed the Tramway Museum Society, established in 1955.
After a sustained search across the country, in 1959 the society's attention was drawn to the then derelict limestone quarry at Crich in Derbyshire, from which members of the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society were recovering track from Stephenson's mineral railway for their pioneering preservation project in Wales.
After a tour of the quarry, members of the society agreed to lease – and later purchase – part of the site and buildings. Over the years, by the efforts of the society members, a representative collection of tramcars was brought together and restored, tramway equipment was acquired, a working tramway was constructed, and depots and workshops were built. Members then turned their attention to collecting items of street furniture and even complete buildings, which were then adapted to house the Museum's collections of books, photographs, and archives.

This Christmas bauble was hand beaded with sequins and pins by me. I have a Christmas tradition. I bead Christmas baubles for a select group of friends every year.
Each bauble is 15 centimetres in diameter and contain hundreds of sequins, varying in number depending upon the complexity of the pattern and the type of sequins I use. Most sequins in this bauble are 5mm in diameter, except the stars which are 10mm. Depending upon the colour of the sequin, I will use either a gold or a silver pin to attach it to the bauble. I always leave the stars until last, allowing a gap in the sequin chain to pin them in. Star sequins are notorious for getting caught on clothes, which then bend the points.
These baubles are smaller than some others I do, and because it is a simple pattern which starts from the inside and is worked outwards in ever larger circles, each bauble takes approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours per side.
It is however, a labour of love which I do to pass the time throughout the year.
This road cut on Bluet pass in Washington state has quite a story to tell. First, the bookends (yellow band at left, and entire right half of the picture) are a section of a 160 million year old Pacific Ocean floor that contains material originating from ocean floor down to the earth’s mantel, here conveniently uplifted so they can be inspected with dry feet (part of the Ingalls terrain ophiolite sequence). About 91 million years ago a magmatic light grey andesite dyke pushed through the ophiolite sequence (where the rear of the car is). This all happened down, somewhere between Northern California and northern Mexico. The entire enchilada was later shifting north and ended up here in Washington’s Central Cascade! But that is not the end, about 45 million years ago, another set of feeder dykes for the Teanaway basalt developed, as evident by the dark brown vertical bands to either side of the grey andesite dyke. Except for erosion, formation of the Cascades, building the road not much happened here since...
Hey guys! I had so much fun creating this new crop top called the Hawk Cropped Tee. I drew some cute cartoon drawings which I hope you guys like. I also included some text options show on the ad above. There is a graphic tee texture HUD for single packs to change the text/image on the top. The Fatpack contains 24 textures and comes with a more customization option which lets users texture the main, sleeves and trim of the shirt plus the text/image options on the top along with it.
Hope you enjoy this month's release at Equal10.

The Rosette Nebula is a cloud of dust containing enough gas and dust to make about 10,000 stars like our Sun. In the centre of the nebula is a cluster of hot, bright young stars. These are warming up the surrounding gas and dust, making it appear bluer. The small, bright white regions are cocoons of dust in which huge stars are currently being born. These “protostars”, each one of which will probably become a star up to ten times more massive than the Sun, are heating up the surrounding gas and dust and making it clow brighter. The smaller, redder dots on the left side and near the centre of the image also contain protostars, but these are smaller, and will go on to form stars much like our Sun. Just as the centre of the nebula contains bright young stars, in a few tens or hundreds of millions of years these stars will have died, but the protostars will have evolved into fully-fledged stars in their own right. In this way, the star formation will move outwards through the nebula.
Local winters contain days of contrasts. I've posted a foggy day along the riverfront and one of clear blue sky as one crosses the river. The gray foggy days outnumber the days with blue sky, which is why I like to travel during the winter when I can.

Domburg's Bath pavilion
The first ‘Badpaviljoen’ was built in 1837, and served as a coffee house and public bath. In 1889 it was replaced by a larger building, with more luxurious rooms and facilities. From the 1970's, the building started to deteriorate. Restoration started in 2001, aided by subsidies. On June 11, 2008, Domburg's Badpaviljoen was reopened by then prime minister J.P. Balkenende. These days, the building contains private apartments and a restaurant.
Walking in the Downtown Los Angeles :)
Downtown Los Angeles contains the central business district of Los Angeles. It is also part of Central Los Angeles. Downtown Los Angeles is divided into neighborhoods and districts, some overlapping. Most districts are named for the activities concentrated there now or historically, e.g. the Arts, Civic Center, Fashion, Banking, Theater, Toy, and Jewelry districts. It is the hub for the city's urban rail transit system plus the Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink commuter rail system for Southern California.
Los Angeles and officially the City of Los Angeles, is the most populous city in the state of California and it's the county seat of Los Angeles County, which is the most populous county in the United States. Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States, and is the commercial, financial, and cultural center of the Southern California region. Los Angeles has a Mediterranean climate, an ethnically and culturally diverse population, and a sprawling metropolitan area. The city was founded on 4 September 1781, under Spanish governor Felipe de Neve, on the village of Yaanga. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and became part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. Los Angeles has a diverse economy with a broad range of industries, best known as the home of the Hollywood film industry.

The main facade overlooking the Danube, but the official entry it is on the opposite side.
It presents statues of Hungarian rulers, Transylvanian leaders and famous military history of the country.
The principal style of the parliament is Neogothic, but are also clear Renaissance influences, with an omnipresent Byzantine touch in the rooms and corridors, especially noticeable in the delicate decoration of the stairs leading to the main hall.
Through this mix of influences, it was intended to represent the different cultures that have influenced and shaped to Hungary throughout its thousand-year history.

Aldborough Roman Site contains the remains of the Roman town of Isurium Brigantium as well as an interesting museum looking at the history of the settlement.
Before the Roman occupation, the region in which modern Aldborough stands was ruled by the Celtic Brigantes. The Brigantes were one of the dominant tribes of the Iron Age in Britain, controlling the area which is now Yorkshire and Lancashire. At the time the Aldborough area was a Brigantian settlement called Iseur, however the Romans built their own settlement here and named the town Isurium Brigantium.
After the Roman invasion of Britain the Brigantes were initially compliant with Roman rule; 'Brigantia' became a client state. Indeed it was the Brigantes Queen Cartimunda who handed over a major adversary of Rome, the Catuvellauni chieftain Caratacus.
After Cartimunda divorced her husband, Venutius, in favour of his armour bearer, Venutius rebelled, and the Brigantian territories descended into civil war. Cartimunda was rescued by Roman aid. Soon after, however, the Romans took advantage of the unrest to take control of the region. In AD71, Petilius Cerialis, the Roman governor of Britain, subjugated the local population and established Isurium Brigantium as the headquarters for controlling the regional population.
In the beginning Isurium Brigantium would simply have been a fort, with a civilian population inhabiting the perimeter of the town. During the second century, the military capacity of the town was much reduced, and it established itself as a civilian centre. Approximately 55 acres in area, Isurium Brigantium was surrounded by a significant stone wall, reaching 12 feet in height, and in some parts, having a depth of 9 feet.
However, the town seems to have diminished during the later Empire period, and with the withdrawal of Roman troops from Britain much of the original Roman town suffered.
Today, very little of the original Roman town remains, except for an area which is managed by English Heritage.
The entrance to Aldborough Roman Site is through an area close to the original Roman south gate. Visitors immediately arrive at the Aldborough Roman Museum, which has on display fascinating architectural finds from the town.
Some parts of the southern wall remain intact, as well as the foundations of two defensive towers. Visitors can also follow the path through the gardens to view the highlight of the site, two magnificent mosaics. The mosaics date from the second or third century AD, and were discovered in the nineteenth century, the first by accident when a calf was being buried by an innkeeper. This mosaic has sustained some damage, and depicts a lion resting under a tree. The second remains well preserved, and shows an eight sided star in the centre.
In 2011, scientists using geomagnetic sensors located the remains of the Roman amphitheatre at Aldborough, under Studforth Hill, just outside the village.
"Town hall, free-standing gable roof building on three sides with plastered half-timbered structure protruding on consoles to the west, solid narrow sides, with stepped gables, clock tower with pointed helmet, house Madonna and outside staircase with late Gothic tracery parapet, before 1497 to around 1513, with an eastern, two-story extension with a gable roof and stepped gable, 1514– 1515, with furnishings.
Ochsenfurt (German: [ˈɔksn̩ˌfʊʁt]) is a town in the district of Würzburg, in Bavaria, Germany. Ochsenfurt is located on the left bank of the River Main and has around 11,000 inhabitants. This makes it the largest town in Würzburg district.
Like Oxford, the town of Ochsenfurt is named after a ford where oxen crossed the river.
The town is situated on the left bank of the River Main, 21 kilometres (13 mi) south of Würzburg.
Ochsenfurt was one of the places in Germany where King Richard I of England was detained in 1193 while on his way to England from the Third Crusade.
A monastery, Tückelhausen Charterhouse, dedicated to Saints Lambert, John the Baptist, and George, was founded in 1138 by Otto I, Bishop of Bamberg, as a double canonry of the Premonstratensians. From 1351 it belonged to the Carthusians and was secularised in 1803.
The charterhouse was largely converted for private residential use and since 1991 contains a museum of Carthusian life.
Ochsenfurt also features several Protestant and Roman Catholic churches, among them that of St Michael (Michaelskapelle), a Gothic edifice.
In 1911 there was a considerable trade in wine and agricultural products, other industries being brewing and malting. Ochsenfurt also has one of the largest sugar factories in Germany.
Lower Franconia (German: Unterfranken) is one of seven districts of Bavaria, Germany. The districts of Lower, Middle and Upper Franconia make up the region of Franconia. It consists of nine districts and 308 municipalities (including three cities).
After the founding of the Kingdom of Bavaria the state was totally reorganised and, in 1808, divided into 15 administrative government regions (German: Regierungsbezirke, singular Regierungsbezirk), in Bavaria called Kreise (singular: Kreis). They were created in the fashion of the French departements, quite even in size and population, and named after their main rivers.
In the following years, due to territorial changes (e. g. loss of Tyrol, addition of the Palatinate), the number of Kreise was reduced to 8. One of these was the Untermainkreis (Lower Main District). In 1837 king Ludwig I of Bavaria renamed the Kreise after historical territorial names and tribes of the area. This also involved some border changes or territorial swaps. Thus the name Untermainkreis changed to Lower Franconia and Aschaffenburg, but the city name was dropped in the middle of the 20th century, leaving just Lower Franconia.
From 1933, the regional Nazi Gauleiter, Otto Hellmuth, (who had renamed his party Gau "Mainfranken") insisted on renaming the government district Mainfranken as well. He encountered resistance from Bavarian state authorities but finally succeeded in having the name of the district changed, effective 1 June 1938. After 1945 the name Unterfranken was restored.
Franconia (German: Franken, pronounced [ˈfʁaŋkŋ̍]; Franconian: Franggn [ˈfrɑŋɡŋ̍]; Bavarian: Frankn) is a region of Germany, characterised by its culture and Franconian dialect (German: Fränkisch).
Franconia is made up of the three Regierungsbezirke of Lower, Middle and Upper Franconia in Bavaria, the adjacent, Franconian-speaking, South Thuringia, south of the Thuringian Forest—which constitutes the language boundary between Franconian and Thuringian— and the eastern parts of Heilbronn-Franconia in Baden-Württemberg.
Those parts of the Vogtland lying in Saxony (largest city: Plauen) are sometimes regarded as Franconian as well, because the Vogtlandian dialects are mostly East Franconian. The inhabitants of Saxon Vogtland, however, mostly do not consider themselves as Franconian. On the other hand, the inhabitants of the Hessian-speaking parts of Lower Franconia west of the Spessart (largest city: Aschaffenburg) do consider themselves as Franconian, although not speaking the dialect. Heilbronn-Franconia's largest city of Heilbronn and its surrounding areas are South Franconian-speaking, and therefore only sometimes regarded as Franconian. In Hesse, the east of the Fulda District is Franconian-speaking, and parts of the Oden Forest District are sometimes regarded as Franconian for historical reasons, but a Franconian identity did not develop there.
Franconia's largest city and unofficial capital is Nuremberg, which is contiguous with Erlangen and Fürth, with which it forms the Franconian conurbation with around 1.3 million inhabitants. Other important Franconian cities are Würzburg, Bamberg, Bayreuth, Ansbach and Coburg in Bavaria, Suhl and Meiningen in Thuringia, and Schwäbisch Hall in Baden-Württemberg.
The German word Franken—Franconians—also refers to the ethnic group, which is mainly to be found in this region. They are to be distinguished from the Germanic people of the Franks, and historically formed their easternmost settlement area. The origins of Franconia lie in the settlement of the Franks from the 6th century in the area probably populated until then mainly by the Elbe Germanic people in the Main river area, known from the 9th century as East Francia (Francia Orientalis). In the Middle Ages the region formed much of the eastern part of the Duchy of Franconia and, from 1500, the Franconian Circle. The restructuring of the south German states by Napoleon, after the demise of the Holy Roman Empire, saw most of Franconia awarded to Bavaria." - info from Wikipedia.

Loch Ard Gorge Cemetery. The cemetery contains the graves of some of those killed in the ship wreck of the "Loch Ard" in June 1878. The ship, which was bound for Melbourne via Liverpool, struck rocks near the opening of a gorge, and only two out of 52 people on board survived the wreck. Only 4 bodies were recovered and they were buried here with cross spars from the wreckage used as markers until later replaced with headstones.

A purely experimental image containing home-grown frost, a flashlight, a chuck of shiny blue chalcopyrite, and a Trioplan lens. Read on for how these ingredients interact!
(NOTE: Come see me at the CanAm Photo Expo this year in Buffalo NY March 31 – April 2. Well worth the time with 17 outstanding instructors and I’ll be showcasing all my macro magic in person. Prepare to be educated and inspired: canamphotoexpo.com/ )
We’ve got cold weather. Technically it’s spring when we should be seeing early flowers starting to bloom, but temps have dropped to -18C / 0.4F for a few nights in a row now with more on the way. Trying to continue my winter experiments as the opportunities allow, I placed an ultrasonic humidifier in an outdoor shed and turned it up to full blast. The result in the morning was magnificent – hoarfrost on the shelves and ceiling of the shed, allowing for plenty of photographic ideas to unfold in my mind.
I did some “ordinary” shots of the frost, and I liked them, but they seemed too static and “documentary”. I then experimented with printing gradients of orange-to-blue to place in the background, but it felt too staged and ultimately uninteresting. That’s when I grabbed one of my recent mineral acquisitions, a beautiful blue hue of Chalcopyrite, and placed it behind the frost, far enough to be out of focus.
Knowing that the crystal facets of the mineral will create coloured specular highlights, I knew it was an opportunity for some intense bokeh. I grabbed my trusty Trioplan 100 lens and set out to work with its “soap bubble” bokeh with a composition around one of the larger arms of frost on the top shelf of the shed. I aimed a (very bright) flashlight at the mineral with light spilling off onto the frost with an appropriate balance, and set to work to try and get something in focus.
Interesting, there is no part of the image that I could classify as truly sharp, even though I’ve seen sharpness from this lens at the widest aperture required for the best bokeh, F/2.8 I think this is due to the nature of the frost surface having so many facets that instantly start creating bokeh-like features as soon as focus falls off, and these overlap the areas that would otherwise be in focus as well. I’ve found a number of simple lenses that also generate sizeable chromatic aberration when shooting snowflakes and frost, and this was one of them. Cleaned it up in the frost, but left it in the bokeh for extra subtle ripples of colour.
Even the tip of the frost is fading out of focus and generating interesting bokeh. I shot this with an initial intent to focus stack a few frames together to increase the depth of field, but I fell in love with the abstract nature of the frost falling into the background. It’s a colourful, happy, abstract image. Maybe too colourful and artsy, but that’s where today’s experimentation brought me. I’d love to know your thoughts!
If you’d be interested in hearing musings like this live, with presentations and inventive demos that illustrate exactly how images like this come to life, you should absolutely attend the CanAm Photo Expo in Buffalo NY this year, held at the end of March / Beginning of April. I’m one of many instructors and am honoured to find myself in such a fantastic group of people who educate and inspire: canamphotoexpo.com/ - I’d love to shake your hand in person and show you how my “mad scientist” ideas come about, and how I follow through with them!

Toft Point contains several outstanding native plant communities concentrated on a 1-mile-wide peninsula along Door County’s Lake Michigan coast. The natural areas provide habitat for more than 440 vascular plant species and one of the most diverse bryophyte (mosses and liverworts) floras in Wisconsin. The site is named for Kersten Toft who received the land as compensation for his work at a limestone quarry nearby. Remaining on site is a historic kiln, which is the state’s best intact example of the early circular kilns.
By XPan II 30/5.6, Jun 2015. The Potala Palace (Tibetan: ཕོ་བྲང་པོ་ཏ་ལ་, Wylie: pho brang Potala) in Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region, China was the residence of the Dalai Lama until the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India during the 1959 Tibetan uprising. It is now a museum and World Heritage Site.
The palace is named after Mount Potalaka, the mythical abode of the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara. The 5th Dalai Lama started its construction in 1645 after one of his spiritual advisers, Konchog Chophel (died 1646), pointed out that the site was ideal as a seat of government, situated as it is between Drepung and Sera monasteries and the old city of Lhasa. It may overlay the remains of an earlier fortress called the White or Red Palace on the site, built by Songtsen Gampo in 637.
The building measures 400 metres (1,300 ft) east-west and 350 metres (1,150 ft) north-south, with sloping stone walls averaging 3 metres (9.8 ft) thick, and 5 metres (16 ft) thick at the base, and with copper poured into the foundations to help proof it against earthquakes. Thirteen storeys of buildings, containing over 1,000 rooms, 10,000 shrines and about 200,000 statues, soar 117 metres (384 ft) on top of Marpo Ri, the "Red Hill", rising more than 300 metres (980 ft) in total above the valley floor.

The Security Building is a historic site in downtown Miami, Florida. It is located at 117 Northeast 1st Avenue. On January 4, 1989, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The building has 16 floors with a height of 225 feet (69 m) and was built from 1926 to 1927.
The Dade County Security Company was organized in 1901 and moved to a nearby headquarters in 1923. By the mid-1920s the company needed a larger headquarters. In 1921, the Dade County Security Company had acquired the McKinnon Hotel which occupied a mid-block parcel on Northeast 1st Avenue and renamed it the Security Hotel. Dade Security had considered adding stories atop the hotel but opted in 1925 to raze the hotel and construct a new headquarters on the same site under the direction of architect Robert Greenfield.
Construction on the Security Building began in 1926. The building was known as the Security Building from its opening in 1927 until 1945. Upon opening, the first level and mezzanine were devoted to banking offices. The floors above provided 275 office suites and were reached by four "high speed" elevators.
The Security Building faces west onto NE 1st Avenue. It is located in mid-block with buildings on either side. Those buildings are considerably shorter than the Security Building. The building maintains a zero-foot (0 m) setback, and the entry doors open directly onto the sidewalk. There are no landscape features on the property. The building is composed of a main block parallel to the street, and a second block connected perpendicularly that extends to the east.
With only a 50-foot (15 m) frontage, the architect made a grand statement by creating an almost temple-like base, consisting of the first three stories. Engaged pilasters, that also frame the center bay, articulate the corners creating three distinct bays. Spandrels between the floors are bronze and feature relief ornament. The pilasters carry the entablature, with the name “Security Building” in incised letters. A dentilled molding ornaments the cornice that terminates this division of the building.
The fourth floor begins the transition to the high-rise portion of the building. Stone panels with a similar relief accent the corners and separate the bays. Above the windows of the fourth floor is another projecting element, a stringcourse that is ornamented with a guilloche pattern in relief.
Floors five through 13 continue the three bays with window arrangements that are grouped in pairs on each of the end bays, and are grouped in three in the center bay, emphasizing the importance of the center bay to the entire composition. The windows are a metal casement type.
Security Building (Miami) South and West Facades, top floors with mansard roof and cupola.
The 14th and 15th floors function as the base for the great mansard roof, which terminates the building. To balance the composition, the two floors are treated as if they were one by the use of a round arch at the 15th floor that is carried by the pilasters of the 14th floor, so that the two floors are visually united.
A bracketed cornice separates the building from the roof form that is so decidedly different from roof treatments in Miami during this period. A mansard roof is a double-pitched roof with a steep upper slope. The mansard roof was named for architect Francois Mansart (1598–1666). Mansart worked in the 17th century and introduced the roof form that extended attic space to provide additional usable area. The mansard roof is a character-defining feature of the Second Empire style that was named after Napoleon III, who took on major building projects in Paris during the 18th century.
The mansard roof of the Security Building is clad in copper and terminates in a series of antefixae. A series of arches containing windows and serving as dormers penetrates the roof. Bull's-eye windows are placed between the arched windows. An eight-sided cupola that extends from the center of the roof is fenestrated on each side with a multi-paned arched window. The dome of the cupola also is clad in copper.
The north and south ends of the building are not ornamented. The windows are a metal casement type. The quoining on the corners of the west elevation is repeated in the north and south elevations of the building. The extension to the east is flat-roofed and is terminated by a defined cornice. The majority of the wall surface contains windows that are either square or rectangular in shape. They contain metal casement windows.
