Sand of Plum Island contains deep purple and dark grey patches. It is due to high abundance of almandine-pyrope garnet, pyroxene augite, and magnetic minerals such as ilmenite and hematite. Epidote adds some greenish hue. The source of the minerals is a terminal moraine that contains huge boulders of igneous and metamorphic rocks and products of their decomposition.

P-243 is a ferocious and pretty heavy male! This is one of the largest males currently being sighted in Indian national parks!
Poaching was of significant concern as the park lost almost all its tigers in 2009 due to the menace. WWF-India supported the Madhya Pradesh state government and the forest department in the translocation of two female tigers to the tiger reserve in 2009. Fast-forward 2023, Panna now has more than 80 tigers and this tiger is a living proof of success of reintroduction of tigers and sustained efforts of staff of Indian Forest Services!
Situated in the Vindhyan mountain range in the northern part of Madhya Pradesh, Panna Tiger Reserve is spread over the Panna and Chhatarpur districts. The terrain here consists of extensive plateaus and gorges. This reserve contains the last remaining tiger habitat of North Madhya Pradesh.

The fortress contains buildings dating as far back as the 1240s, as well as later constructions built as recently as World War II. The extent of the enclosed area of today dates from the early 19th century. In medieval times, the area of the present-day Bergenhus Fortress was known as Holmen (The islet), and contained the royal residence in Bergen, as well as a cathedral and several churches, the bishop's residence, and a Dominican monastery. Excavations have revealed foundations of buildings believed to date back to before 1100, which might have been erected by King Olav Kyrre. In the 13th century, until 1299, Bergen was the capital of Norway and Holmen was thus the main seat of Norway's rulers. It was first enclosed by stone walls in the 1240s.

The ossuary is a memorial containing the remains of both French and German soldiers who died on the Verdun battlefield. Through small outside windows, the skeletal remains of at least 130,000 unidentified combatants of both nations can be seen filling up alcoves at the lower edge of the building. On the inside of the ossuary building, the ceiling and walls are partly covered by plaques bearing names of French soldiers who died during the Battle of Verdun. A few of the names are from fighting that took place in the area during World War II, as well as for veterans of the Indochina and Algerian Wars. The families of the soldiers that are recognized here by name contributed for those individual plaques.

Isalo is one of Madagascar's most beautiful parks. It contains sculpted buttes, vertical rock walls and, best of all, deep canyon floors shot through with streams, lush vegetation and pools for swimming. All of this changes with the light, culminating in extraordinary sunsets beneath a big sky. Add all this to easy access off the RN7 and you understand why this is Madagascar’s most visited park.
At more than 800 sq km, it’s also a large park, so if you want to go off on your own there is plenty of room for exploration, with everything from two-hour to week-long hikes. There's also an excellent chance of spotting ring-tailed lemurs and Verreaux's sifaka around the Nemaza campsite.

The Calabash Nebula, pictured here — which has the technical name OH 231.8+04.2 — is a spectacular example of the death of a low-mass star like the sun. This image taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows the star going through a rapid transformation from a red giant to a planetary nebula, during which it blows its outer layers of gas and dust out into the surrounding space. The recently ejected material is spat out in opposite directions with immense speed — the gas shown in yellow is moving close to one million kilometers per hour (621,371 miles per hour).
Astronomers rarely capture a star in this phase of its evolution because it occurs within the blink of an eye — in astronomical terms. Over the next thousand years the nebula is expected to evolve into a fully-fledged planetary nebula.
The nebula is also known as the Rotten Egg Nebula because it contains a lot of sulphur, an element that, when combined with other elements, smells like a rotten egg — but luckily, it resides over 5,000 light-years away in the constellation of Puppis.

Sweat bee

Initial tentative ID was something in the Perdita genus (containing about 600 species), given that it's about half the size of a grain of rice. Probably the smallest bee I've ever seen. The metallic brass color is interesting, but it seemed too small to be a sweat bee (plus, I thought that the metallic sweat bees are green). Feeding on Cleveland sage. Pollen grains and droplets of nectar are both available for this little one.
Perditas and sweat bees alike are some of the smallest bees in existence anywhere (smaller than the eyes of some other bees), but they are, nonetheless, very important pollinators, and can carry a surprising amount of the grains on their bodies). They, along with hoverflies, are small enough to some flowers that larger bees cannot. Ironically, though, they, like, carpenter bees can also engage in nectar-robbing -- from flowers that are too deep. This sage blossom is wonderful for this little one, as the well-exposed anthers have pollen and droplets of nectar a little further down the stamen, available to a variety of bee species. Flat flowers like yarrow are also readily accessible forage for many kinds of bees, flies, butterflies and other pollinators.
There are about 1000 species of sweat bees in the US.

The Chattanooga National Cemetery established in 1867 current contains 37,000 interments with more than 12,000 Union soldiers interred here.
Messier 5 is a globular cluster found in the constellation of Serpens. It lies close to the star at top right - 5 Serpens which is actually a double (just resolved here). Estimated to contain at least 100000 stars. It is distinguishable from other GCs by its long "spider-like arms".
It is probably the remnant of a dwarf galaxy that has lost its outer stars to the gravity of our large Milky Way galaxy. It is about 13 billion years old.
The cluster contains several RR Lyrae variables whose periodicity/luminosity relationship can be used to work out the exact distance to the cluster - just like Cepheid variables or Type 1a supernovae. RR Lyrae stars are not that bright so can only be used as standard candles in reasonably close galaxies.
This is 18 x 6 minute exposures dithered and drizzled. Processed in PixInsight 1.8. Taken remotely with scope T3 at iTelescope's New Mexico observatory.
A beautiful but sadly abandoned Victorian landmark at 200-206 Main Street in Dawson, Pennsylvania. Constructed in 1897 in the era of abundant local wealth from the coal and coke industry. The most recent business tenants in the building were T. Keffer's Pizza, and then Miller's Pizza. Those shops were on the first floor in #204, which is the section that has the canopy in the photo. Unfortunately a truck turned the corner too tightly and took out the columns supporting the stone arch under the turret. One has apparently been replaced, but where is the other one? This is part of the Dawson Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, which contains 108 qualifying buildings. More info about this district may be seen on the following website:

L'interno della chiesa, con pianta a forma di croce latina a tre navate, presenta una peculiare suddivisione su tre livelli: la cripta è in basso, sovrastata prima dalla chiesa plebana e poi dal presbiterio (o Chiesa Superiore) a cui si accede mediante due maestose scalinate in marmo. Basilica of San Zeno, Verona
Main masterpiece of Romanesque architecture in Italy, the Basilica of San Zeno is one of the most important buildings of the city. It is dedicated to the eighth bishop of Verona, a saint of African origin to which are attributed many miracles, and the conversion to Christianity of Veneto populations. The original nucleus of the San Zeno Basilica dates back to the fourth century, when a small church was built near the site of the Holy Burial.
The interior, with a Latin cross plan with three naves, presents a peculiar split on three levels: the crypt is at the bottom, topped by the first parish church and then from the presbytery (or Upper Church) which can be accessed via two majestic marble staircases. Even the great cloister (which is accessed through the left aisle) is Romanesque and dates from the twelfth century, composed of numerous small arches supported by twin columns, contains ancient tombs, ancient frescos and a shrine containing the wash of the friars.
The family Phylliidae contains the extant true leaf insects or walking leaves, which include some of the most remarkably camouflaged leaf mimics (mimesis) in the entire animal kingdom. They occur from South Asia through Southeast Asia to Australia.

Messier 45, The Pleiades or The Seven Sisters, is an open star cluster containing young, hot B-type stars situated in the constellation of Taurus. It lies at a distance of around 444 light-years and is one of the nearest star clusters to us. The cluster is dominated by hot blue luminous stars that have formed within the last 100 million years. Reflection nebulae around the brightest stars were once thought to be leftover material from their formation but are now considered likely to be an unrelated dust cloud in the interstellar medium through which the stars are currently passing.

We’ve got cold weather. Technically it’s spring when we should be seeing early flowers starting to bloom, but temps have dropped to -18C / 0.4F for a few nights in a row now with more on the way. Trying to continue my winter experiments as the opportunities allow, I placed an ultrasonic humidifier in an outdoor shed and turned it up to full blast. The result in the morning was magnificent – hoarfrost on the shelves and ceiling of the shed, allowing for plenty of photographic ideas to unfold in my mind.
I did some “ordinary” shots of the frost, and I liked them, but they seemed too static and “documentary”. I then experimented with printing gradients of orange-to-blue to place in the background, but it felt too staged and ultimately uninteresting. That’s when I grabbed one of my recent mineral acquisitions, a beautiful blue hue of Chalcopyrite, and placed it behind the frost, far enough to be out of focus.
Knowing that the crystal facets of the mineral will create coloured specular highlights, I knew it was an opportunity for some intense bokeh. I grabbed my trusty Trioplan 100 lens and set out to work with its “soap bubble” bokeh with a composition around one of the larger arms of frost on the top shelf of the shed. I aimed a (very bright) flashlight at the mineral with light spilling off onto the frost with an appropriate balance, and set to work to try and get something in focus.
Interesting, there is no part of the image that I could classify as truly sharp, even though I’ve seen sharpness from this lens at the widest aperture required for the best bokeh, F/2.8 I think this is due to the nature of the frost surface having so many facets that instantly start creating bokeh-like features as soon as focus falls off, and these overlap the areas that would otherwise be in focus as well. I’ve found a number of simple lenses that also generate sizeable chromatic aberration when shooting snowflakes and frost, and this was one of them. Cleaned it up in the frost, but left it in the bokeh for extra subtle ripples of colour.
Even the tip of the frost is fading out of focus and generating interesting bokeh. I shot this with an initial intent to focus stack a few frames together to increase the depth of field, but I fell in love with the abstract nature of the frost falling into the background. It’s a colourful, happy, abstract image. Maybe too colourful and artsy, but that’s where today’s experimentation brought me. I’d love to know your thoughts!

The Bodie Lighthouse contains a first-order Fresnel lens. The lens is about 12 feet tall. Unlike many other light houses, the lens in this lighthouse does not rotate. The dark lanes are the window frames. Instead of rotating the light is a 1000 Watt bulb that is dark for 22.5 seconds, turns on for 5, off for 5 then on again for 5 seconds. The 22.5 seconds of darkness makes it possible to get an image that does not "wash out" a shot if you time the shot to start just as the last on-cycle is ending... of course that's what we did.
Our first trip to the lighthouse had enough moisture in the air that capturing the "beams" proved an interesting challenge.
