Carsten Mueller from German Consulate

Visits Engro’s Plants & CSR Projects

Karachi, Mar 11, 2016: During a recent visit by Mr. Carsten Mueller, Consul & Deputy Head of Mission, German Consulate was taken on a tour of Engro’s various plants and facilities located in the interior of Sindh. He was accompanied by Mr. Wajid Hussain Junejo, Head of Procurement & Materials Management at Engro and Director of the board of German Pakistan Trade & Investment.

Carsten Mueller was initially taken to the flagship fertilizer business of the group located in Daharki where he had the opportunity to witness the world’s largest single train urea project and 5th largest Ammonia Urea facility across the globe. Following this the Consul & Deputy Head of Mission was taken to the Sahara Welfare Society which runs schools, medical centers and skill development centers for girls of the neighboring areas so as to help better their standards of living and further Engro’s philosophy of deploying inclusive business models for the communities that hosts their plants and facilities.

Engro Foundation’s flagship CSR project at Ghotki “Technical Training Center,” also runs in the same area, where boys from the surrounding villages receive various skills training such as Mechanical, Electrical, Welding, Machining and Chemical trades. The first batch that graduated from the center achieved 100% employment. After his tour of the training center, Mr. Carsten Mueller was taken to Engro’s state-of-the-art power plant located in Qadirpur. The Qadirpur plant is one of country’s first ‘green power plants’ since it uses permeate (flare) gas to produce 217 MW power whilst reducing carbon emissions by decreasing the flare at the gas field.

During his visit Mr. Carsten Mueller stated: “I did not expect the countryside of northern Sindh to be so welcoming. I am extremely surprised, by what Engro in its variety of companies has set up in the region. The working environment is world-class – an aspect I could not have imagined. Corporate Social Responsibility is what creates a world of better living for the people you are dealing with. What Engro Corporation’s team has shown me during this trip, starting from Sahara School to the Women Empowerment Initiative in Sukkur, was tremendously amazing. All of this is only possible because of the personal involvement of the Company’s people.” Mr. Carsten also took the opportunity to thank Engro Corporation for providing him with a better understanding of the Company, the work it does and the Pakistani people.

During his trip Mr. Carsten Mueller also visited Engro Foods Sukkur plant and was given a presentation on Engro Foundation’s WELD (Women Empowerment in Livestock Development) project which trains the local women to earn their livelihood through livestock development. Some of the beneficiaries of the project were presented with iPads by Mr. Carsten Mueller.

The trip concluded with a visit to the “Engro Thalassemia Center” at Sukkur which has now been converted to a general hospital serving need-based patients on a self-sustained basis.

In the end Mr. Carsten thanked Engro and Wajid Hussain Junejo for organizing such a marvelous trip and rated Engro as one of the World Class organizations brightening the name of Pakistan around the globe.

Solidarity from Zuccotti Park to Gezi Park. Occupy Wall Street and members of New York City's Turkish community gathered in Occupy's old base in Zuccotti Park near Wall Street on June 8 to protest the Turkish government's bloody crackdown on peaceful protesters. What began as an effort to preserve a small park in Istanbul's Taksim Square has become a national campaign against Turkey's increasingly authoritarian Islamic government. In New York protesters mount daily demonstrators at the Turkish Consulate demanding the resignation of the Erdogan government and a halt to state violence.

The Greek Consulate General, formerly known as the George and Sarah Rives House or the 67-69 East 79th Street House, was built by Carrére & Hastings in 1907-1908. Modeled on the late 17th century townhouses built on la place Vendôme in Paris, this house was commissioned by the lawyer, statesman (he was assistant Secretary of State), and historian George Rives and his second wife, Sarah. In 162, Greek architect Pierre Zannettos altered the top two floors of the house and added a sixth story.

The George and Sarah Rives House was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1981.

The first day of the 'border crisis' protest outside the Mexican Consulate in Houston, Texas. I mark it (coming out of my unbiased ways) as a protest for intolerance, selfishness, and hate against immigrants, legal or not. For once, it's about changing legality to stay with the changing times, as well as the morality and ethics of the issue, which is more than that group of people can take on.

Several hundred people have staged a protest march in Hong Kong in support of US-whistleblower Edward Snowden. Demonstrators marched from Chater Garden to the US Consulate in Central. Protesters accused the US government of infringing people's rights and privacy. They said Mr Snowden should be protected. The former CIA-employee, has said he'll stay in Hong Kong to fight any attempt to extradite him to the United States. The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong has urged the US government to clarify whether it has hacked into the computers of any individuals, corporations or institutions in Hong Kong.

CSU Trustee Silas Abrego shares a light moment with Rosalina Davis, a Class of '77 Titan who earned a bachelor's degree in Spanish, became mayor of Placentia and co-owner of that city’s popular Tlaquepaque Restaurant. The annual spring event they continue to support raises funds for first-generation college students at Cal State Fullerton.

The so-called American Consulate in Paradise Street has a sign which says that James Maury had an office in Paradise Street at some time during his 44 years in office (but typically doesn't give an exact date).

Even if that's true (which I doubt) the sign doesn't claim that the building with the Eagle on it WAS the Consulate.

That's been left to people who've misinterpreted what's been said.

Edit. 2022.

This has been bumped up because I've been told that there's a new "Heritage Trail" in Liverpool One which (among other things) repeats the ridiculous claim that the American Consulate was in Paradise Street, just beause there was a pub with the eagle on its facade,

Incidentally, Exchange Buildings was behind the Town Hall.

Fort San Domingo was built by the Spanish in 1628 after which the present site of the Fort was named. On a night in 1636, a group of local people, angered by the taxes that the Spanish governor had imposed, successfully attacked the fort and demolished it. In 1637, the Spanish rebuilt the fort using stone and raised the walls' height to twenty feet or more. In 1642, the Dutch expelled the Spaniards from nearby Keelung. The Spanish fort in Tamsui had by then already been razed by the Spanish themselves. The Dutch built a new fort on the site, called Fort Antonio. In 1644, they replaced it by the structure still standing today, also called Fort Anthonio. The locals called the Dutch "the red-haired people". From 1683 to 1867 the Qing Dynasty Chinese government controlled the fort and during this time (1724) built a stone wall with four gates around it, of which only one (main) gate survives.

Following the Second Opium War, in 1868 the British took over the fort, made it their trade consulate, the Former British Consular Residence, as a popular tourist attraction nowadays, and painted it red (it was previously white). The linguist Herbert Allen Giles resided in the fort from 1885 to 1888 and completed some of his work on the Wade-Giles system of romanization of Standard Chinese there. Next to the fort the British built their consular residence in 1891. The consulate closed during World War II and reopened after the end of the war. The British severed relations with the Republic of China in 1972. Later in 1972 the Fort was used as the Australian Consulate. The Republic of China (ROC) government retrieved the land from the British in 1980, several years after the United Kingdom broke off diplomatic relations with the ROC in 1972.

On November 18th, we celebrated the 90th Anniversary of the Charles’ Mitchell mansion, also known as the Consulate general of France's building.

934 Fifth Avenue is probably the best-known address for French New Yorkers. For 50 years, it has been the home of the French Consulate.

Since 1926, the 934 Residence has always been perceived as a flagship for elegance. Charles Mitchell, his first owner, the millionaire president of National City Bank, succeed in making his mansion “a show place of this fashionable neighborhood”, as the New York Times wrote in 1942.

On March 25, 1942, The French Consulate, which had outgrown the space it had been renting since 1933 at 610 Fifth Avenue, in the prestigious Rockefeller Center, purchased a building twenty-five blocks to the north, facing Central Park. The address: 934 Fifth Avenue.

This very beautiful mansion, built in 1926 by the architects Alexander Walker and Leon Gillette for financier Charles Mitchell, had been “taken over” by J.P. Morgan & Co in 1939 after the bankruptcy of its owner.
