Memorial to the late President of Poland, Lech Kaczynski at the Consulate-General of Poland.

“WARSAW — A plane carrying the Polish president and dozens of the country’s top political and military leaders to the site of the Soviet massacre of Polish officers in World War II crashed in western Russia on Saturday, killing everyone on board.

President Lech Kaczynski’s plane tried to land in a thick fog, missing the runway and snagging treetops about half a mile from the airport in Smolensk, scattering chunks of flaming fuselage across a bare forest.

The crash came as a stunning blow to Poland, wiping out a large portion of the country’s leadership in one fiery explosion. And in a bizarre twist, it happened at the moment that Russia and Poland were beginning to come to terms with the killing of more than 20,000 members of Poland’s elite officer corps in the same place 70 years ago.

“It is a damned place,” former President Aleksander Kwasniewski told TVN24. “It sends shivers down my spine.”

“This is a wound which will be very difficult to heal,” he said.”

The British Ambassador to the United States, Sir Peter Westmacott, made his first official visit to Denver from 2-4 October. The visit helped to strengthen the already extensive connections between the UK and Colorado, where British investment supports almost 14,000 jobs.

As well as calling on Governor Hickenlooper and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, the Ambassador helped promote commercial links with visits to local firms and a gala reception at the Consulate. He also met with local political commentators, spoke to editors at the Denver Post, and took in the first 2012 presidential debate at the University of Denver.

The Consulate General of Russia in New York City is the diplomatic mission of the Russian Federation in New York City. Opened in 1994, the consulate is located at 9 East 91st Street in the former John Henry Hammond House. The five-story Renaissance style limestone townhouse, designed by Carrère and Hastings, was built in 1903 for Hammond, a New York City banker.

A consulate of the former Soviet Union had previously existed on E. 61st Street from 1933 until 1948. Cold War disputes and other issues led to the mission’s closing for 46 years.
