"If Thai citizens think and act in an agreeable and constructive manner, then the country will surely survive."

King's Speech 9 June 2006.

(60th Anniversary of King Bhumibhol,

at the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall)

Full text

"I am pleased to preside over the public audience for Thai citizens and all institutions. Thank you for the congratulatory messages and grand celebrations organised especially for me. The government has made fine preparations and Thai citizens have shown their goodwill throughout the nation.

I am gratified by today's gathering because everyone came to express sincerity.

I am thankful for the well-wishers and the way they have acted in unison.

I feel heartened by unity and would like to remind all about some underlying principles to guide Thai citizens in joining together to preserve and develop their country to new heights of prosperity.

First, everyone should show kindness and compassion to ensure the mental and physical well being of one another.

Second, people should strive to cooperate for the mutual benefit of oneself, others and the country.

Third, everyone should uphold honesty and observe rules and traditions with impartiality.

Fourth, everyone should adhere to righteous thinking and act reasonably.

If Thai citizens think and act in an agreeable and constructive manner, then the country will surely thrive.

Everyone in the public audience and all Thai citizens should strictly follow these principles and propagate them in perpetuity so the country can remain in peace and happiness for the present as well as the future.

May the goodness of the Buddhist Triple Gems and universal sacredness bless the country so as to overcome dangers and allow Thai citizens to live in bliss and prosperity."

This event explored how the public can be more effectively and constructively engaged in decision making about public sector markets.

The public understandably want to be involved in decisions on the shape of public services. The quality and value of public services – rather than who provides them – continues to be a top priority for users. But many are still on the fence when it comes to the way in which public sector markets work. People want to know how decisions are taken, how they can be involved in these decisions, and that governments and providers will take responsibility for successes and mistakes alike. This event gave an updated perspective on citizens’ attitudes to public sector markets and explore how government and providers can better involve the public in their design and delivery. It also looked at how transparency can be improved and who should be accountable if things go wrong.

This event was Chaired by Sarah Neville, Public Policy Editor, Financial Times. There will be time for Q&A.

and the Panellists were:

Geraldine Blake – Chief Executive, Community Links

Bobby Duffy – Managing Director, Ipsos MORI

Nick Bell - Chief Executive, Prospects Services

Laura Bunt – Head of Policy Research and Communications at Citizens Advice

This was the fourth and final event in a series sponsored by the Business Services Association on Where next for public service markets?

The Institute for Government would like to thank the BSA for supporting the four events in the Markets series.

blog entry

And just like that, it's complete. One year summed up in 52 moments.

I appreciate all of your support and encouraging words as well as your constructive criticism throughout the process. I couldn't have produced the same quality photos I strived for without your feedback. It means more than I could ever possibly explain.

I'm not usually keen on sharing this fact about myself, but I really like writing poetry; specifically rhyming. Something about the challenge of connecting sounds and meaning between otherwise dissimilar words attracts me. I find it incredibly effective for expressing my emotions in ways I can't always dictate in normal writing.

For my final shot, this was just the case. It's a bittersweet ending to a project that really helped me find my creative style. I don't want it to be finished, but at the same time it opens a new door for something else; something better.

Interpret the picture and writing as you will. My work is for myself and finding greater purpose, but it's also for you.

There are things in this world

That lack a description

There are pictures you'll find

That have no depiction

Roads you might travel

That don't have a sign

And plans you might make

That don't all align

Not everything comes

With a guide or direction

Not all paths you cross

Will make a connection

But don't be deterred

By the things you don't know

Because learning new things

Only helps you to grow

At times we all wish

We could be somewhere new

Not confined by a desk

But a place with a view

Where the wind is our breath

And the trees are our bones

And the bed that we lie on

Is made up of stones

Out in the wild

Where normal is not

Extreme is extreme

And time isn't bought

Where mind equals matter

And passion is real

And being alive

Is something we feel

So why aren't we there?

What put us off track?

What stands in our way

That's holding us back?

Is there anything really

That's saying we shouldn't?

Or is it merely ourselves

Just thinking we couldn't?

Cause you really can

If there's a will, there's a way

Don't wait for tomorrow

But do it today

The choice is your own

So make the decision

When push comes to shove

Shove back with precision

Take some big leaps

Don't be scared if you fall

Because why give it half

If you can give it your all?

Don't seek inspiration

Where inspiration is sought

But find it yourself

Where it's typically not

Forgive and let go

But never forget

Because memories define

What we haven't done yet

This life we were given

It's got something great

So get out there now

It's never too late
