As part of the Lakeshore Complete Streets project, the sidewalks on Lake Park from Rand to the mid-block crosswalk are being widened by six feet.
This shot was taken from Rand facing to the west. Sidwalks were widened to better accommodate AC Transit buses and also to create a more pedestrian-friendly connection between Grand and Lakeshore.
Sidewalk being poured on the corner of Lakeshore and MacArthur. The main objective of this element of the Complete Streets Project was to bulb out the sidewalks at the southeast corner in order to shorten the crosswalks and also to slow down cars turning right to enter the freeway.

I'm curious what the mesh is for; I'm guessing they are to isolate areas which will later be filled by something, but perhaps that's where the trees will eventually be planted.
Well looks like the construction sites are up and running again. This was the scene at Les Bassins du Havre at Richmond and Basin streets in Griffentown today.

Much of the TransCanada (Highway 1) within Metro Vancouver will be widened under the provincial government's Gateway Program.
The Sprott-Kensington sector will be widened to four lanes. Five lanes wide where there are merging lanes for on- and off-ramps.

I was looking at a headline from our newspaper the other day, one highlighting the "final" total bill for construction of a new city-county jail. Of course, we don't know yet how much the maintenance and operation will cost. But, at least there is a bottom-line figure for building that facility, a place in which we can better accommodate -- that is, lock up -- troublemakers, lawbreakers and so on.
Seeing the dollar amount, I couldn't help but try to estimate how many houses could be built with $80 million, if it were in the hands of, say, Habitat for Humanity. Probably well over 500. That sum would even be a substantial contribution for the current humanitarian relief efforts in Haiti.
Instead, we've bought ... a jail. Something that is, unfortunately, an essential part of our criminal justice machinery. Essential, yes, but what better example could one come up with to illustrate the meaning of the phrase "necessary evil"?
The jail is still empty, despite having been declared finished several months ago. Officials are still working on the operational details -- the terms for who'll pay what, etc., etc. So, it stands there like a symbol, maybe even a monument, to one of society's most obvious and vexing shortcomings.
