Constant ash fall today from the Cameron Peak fire in northern Colorado to the west of Fort Collins. Thankfully some moisture, snow, and cold coming Monday night.

As I walked through the valley of covent gardens. I avert my eyes from the hustle of passing crowds to look for the light.

Raw material and finished product are the two options on this 50/50 Wheel of Fortune. Hot metal arrives Lakefront Yard, while Arcelor takes a handful of empty coil cars around the horn.

I've learned that although it may seem dead over here at first glance, you simply have to wait 15 minutes and something assuredly will happen. I'm not even including the old Conrail mains in that advice!

Found this older portrait of dear Caillou that never got posted.

Since he's gone I'm discovering these past photos of him are more important than ever, I really miss the the old rascal

No matter how much you try to obtain variety and diversity in life, at some point, there is always a kind of routine monotony spreading around. As it consists of the same processes, tasks, and people, excitement all goes flat little by little.

Looking for variations to bland everyday life can spice up unexceptional experiences. Such an escape from the misery of the constant boring repetition offers the possibility to rediscover yourself. And so, a little more contrast can suddenly create a whole new and exciting perception.

Tunnel di visioni a velocità accecante

Controllano i miei pensieri, mi ossessionano

Privo di ogni incertezza

Attraverso la mia anima

Illusioni fuori dal mio controllo

Resistendo ad ogni speranza di lasciarsi andare

Corrono impulsi di oscuri desideri

Guidandomi attraverso la notte . . .

The 4477th Test and Evaluation Squadron (4477 TES) "Red Eagles" was a unit that flew Soviet and Chinese aircraft under the then-classified CONSTANT PEG program as aggressor aircraft for the US Air Force. Working from 1977-1988, the Red Eagles operated various clandestinely-acquired MiG-17, MiG-21, MiG-23, and J-7 fighters out of Tonopah Test Range, Nevada. In their 11 years of flying, the Red Eagles exposed thousands of American aircrew to Soviet tactics and fighter capabilities, better preparing the US Air Force, Navy, and Marines for air-air engagements against MiGs. While it is still not publicly known where all of these MiGs came from, the CONSTANT PEG program was critical to cementing the superiority of American and western airpower during the second half of the Cold War.

The story of the 4477th TES and the wider Soviet fighter exploitation programs are told really well in Gail Peck's (the first squadron commander) America’s Secret MiG Squadron and Steve Davies’ Red Eagles.

This model is of a MiG-21MF, probably secretly purchased from the Egyptians in 1980 under the HAVE COAT test program. As far as I can tell, there are no pictures of any Fishbed Js in service with the 4477 TES, but declassified documents indicate that they flew at least one of them. Unfortunately, a lot of physical records from these secret test programs were destroyed during the September 11th attacks on the Pentagon, so there are quite a few gaps in the historical record.

Red Eagle MiGs were often painted a variety of camouflage schemes, but this one represents a plain gray paint scheme with simpler red star emblems. Although a different variant, the former Red Eagles MiG-21F-13 on static display outside the 64th Aggressor Squadron building at Nellis AFB, Nevada has this livery.

Big thanks to Awe, who let me slightly modify and build his stellar MiG-21/MeMe-21. Go check it out!

Crested Ant-Tanager (Habia cristata), difficult bird to photograph as it is very nervous, in constant movement. Searching for orchids one also see birds, like this endemic (exclusive) species from the Western Mountain Range of Colombia during an 11 days tour I just guided in Valle del Cauca and Cauca departments, Colombia

Another lovely barn that appears to still be in use.

A hidden waterfall along the White Road hike to the water flume slide. On the way back we found a small clearing with a short path to this waterfall. The water was raging, creating a constant wind and mist. It was difficult to capture as I had to wipe my lens every few seconds.

I still love shooting the city and I don't post these often, but when I am out shooting sessions I always make sure to capture a few shots of the city. This was from a month or so ago.

The beautiful Loretto Convent building sitting atop Catholic Hill in downtown Guelph dates back to 1853 when the original section was completed. An addition added in 1872 and finally two additional floors and a new roof in 1896. The building houses a Catholic School, the first in the country in the early days run by the nuns. With the girls taking classes in the convent while the boys took their classes in the Rectory. The school became so popular that two proper schools were errected, St. Agnes (previous photo) and St. Stanislaus (Demolished and replaced in 1977). The convent would close in 1996 and in 2012 reopen after extensive restoration and renovation as the Guelph Civic Museum. The sisters of Loretto still maintain a presence in Guelph.

This Towhee was constantly on the move - scratching in the weeds and then scurrying under a bush. He finally hopped on top of a log for a clear shot.

During our Alps trip we found dead fruitbodies of Fomes fomentarius that were completely covered with these beetles. They are an endangered species but apparently in this region the population was very healthy. From what I've read they also currently spread.

They were also copulating like crazy (pictures in the comments, click to enlarge). I would've liked to get a proper stack of them, but unfortunately they were constantly moving around.

Constantly appearing sun rays and their silvery reflections off distant water bodies highlighted a short hike around Weereewa (Lake George, NSW). They at least reminded me of the possibility of warmth on a very cold and windy day, also punctuated by lashing showers.

This shot was taken right on Hwy 395 going south and looking at Mono Lake north side. The storms were alive throughout the day. This was a big rain and hail shower moving with a great lightning show.

The patch of water has a bit of light from the sun. That would be the same sun that I had hoped for during the day and semi-clear nights that I did not get this trip.

This was the first time I had ever seen an iceberg or a glacier and they both lived up to my expectations. Photographing at Jokulsarlon was an amazing experience, and what made it even better was that these birds that were constantly flying in between the icebergs.

At some point you told me your biggest fears and you told me all those things that constantly roamed your head. You told me about what usually happens in life and what you wanted to avoid, and in turn, how this adventure was changing everything.

That has been my biggest motivation since then, and although today you have shown me that you have overcome these fears with flying colors.

I try every day so that you do not have to go through any of that. You already dared to be the change: but there is nothing that makes me more proud than see you happy in what you really love, I think that is what counts after all, because I know that inside everything, that smile which I fell in love with so much is present. An allegory to someone who isn't, who has made me very happy.

I love you.

Growing up, the Georgia Northeastern was a haven for 567-powered EMD’s, even with the acquisition of 3 newer 645-powered motors 20 some-odd years ago. Even after being acquired by Patriot Rail in 2015, the 567 power continued to live along side the increasing number of 645-powered EMD’s that were now being introduced, that is until “The Purge of 2017,” when the 567 motors were either sold or scrapped. The only engine to be spared was 8705, a GP18 that was originally built in 1960 for the Nickel Plate Road as their 708. This now made it the most unique engine they had, despite having become one of the more-hated engines on the roster by railfans in 2014 after GNRR chop-nosed it.

After 2017, the engine was sent to the companies subsidiary, the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, where it was assumed that it would likely live out the remainder of its days on the northern end of the line. To our surprise though, the engine was seen in Elizabeth yard at the southern terminus of the line in March of 2020 & later seen in revenue freight service a few days later. On March 26th, it was reported that it would be leading a SB run of 9 marble cars from Tate late in the afternoon, marking the first chance I’d have to shoot it leading since the purge. Here, we see the train pulling up to Pilgrims Pride Grain Elevator just north of Holly Springs, where it will pick up 8 empties as they continue south.

While the return of 8705 is a welcomed surprise, the GNRR is getting ready to go through a rough patch due to slow traffic & the impending closure of Pilgrim as they get ready to move a new site south of Ranger, GA. At said, at least 8705 has return (temporary, at least) & they still have the marble mine in Tate & with UAC in Canton beginning to ship products again, that’ll at least help carry some of the lost grain traffic. 3-26-20

Small shorebird. Constantly bobs its tail while working edges of streams, ponds, and lakes for invertebrates. Several individuals may be found at the same body of water, but never forms tight flocks. Underparts spotted in summer; plain in winter. Listen for two- or three-noted whistled call as they flush from shorelines. Distinctive wingbeats: snappy and below horizontal.

When younger there was a Dutch advertising campaign by Opel car manufacturer with the slogan "Constant in Opel" meaning driving in an Opel continually (Kadett at the time). since that time I remember the city's name constantly 😄

Constantinople became the capital of the Roman Empire during the reign of Constantine the Great in 330. Officially renamed Istanbul in 1930, the city is today the largest city and financial centre of Turkey and the largest city in Europe, straddling the Bosporus strait, lying in both Europe and Asia, and has a population of over 15 million residents, comprising 19% of the population of Turkey. Istanbul is the most populous European city and the world's 15th-largest city.

I constantly find myself being drawn into scenes like this. And not merely from a photographic viewpoint. I must have spent a half hour exploring in and around this mausoleum. I was intrigued by the darkening of the stones and the odd patina and discoloration, not to mention the sheer sense of history. The broken slabs that form the terrace added to the atmosphere, as well as the dead rose vines that put me in mind of barbed wire and added a layer of hostility to the aura. All in all this is a virtual monument to grim death, and every piece of stone fits together to tell the sad story. I sat on the terrace for a while not taking any photos, just absorbing the energy. After a while my eye was drawn to that little bit of green vegetation lurking in the corner between the steps and that foundation stones. The sunlight was illuminating it perfectly and for a moment it was as if this entire scene was a stage designed to focus the eye on those green leaves. In processing the photo I kept that little patch virtually intact and subtly altered everything around it.
