MADEIRA PARK is located on the southeast side of Pender Harbour, 58 km (36 miles) north of Langdale ferry terminal on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia. It is named after the pioneer Jose Goncalos, a native of the Madeira Islands who settled in the area in the early 1900s.
The MADEIRA PARK Post Office (first opening) was established - 1 July 1946 and closed - 16 January 1951.

The first Post Office in MADEIRA PARK was in a store on the property above Madeira Marina. The store was ran by Constance Harper and the postmaster was Col. Ernest Stuart Johnstone. The post office moved to the new store in the photo in 1956. The first owners were the Wendland family followed by Syd McDonnell. Marsh and Jeanne Ness, parents of the late Mary Joss, owned it until 1971 when they sold the store to Willy and Linda Mattis who operated it until 1976. (By then, the post office had moved to the current location near the fire hall in 1968.) Edgar "Ernest" Stuart Johnstone was the first Postmaster at MADEIRA PARK and served from - 1 July 1946 to - 16 July 1951.
28126 Cpl Edgar Stuart Johnstone was attested on 7th August 1914 and landed in France on 13th August, so another rapid transition from civilian to soldier. He served with both of the Units mentioned - he was initially attached to GHQ Signal company but a few weeks later transferred to the 2nd Cavalry Division Signal Squadron (presumably when the 2nd Cavalry Division was formed). He was the son of a surgeon, and was later commissioned in the Royal Engineers - later in the war he served in a Tunnelling Company. He survived the war, and there is an Ancestry record of his marriage in British Columbia in 1927 where he is shown as an engineer by profession.

Biography: An accomplished actress, orator and speech therapist, Constance Allen Thomas is a member of a prominent Seattle family. Her parents, Edward Alexander and Marjorie Marian Allen Pitter, were very involved in political and civil rights activities. She entered the University of Washington in 1935, where she was involved in theatrical productions both on campus and with the Works Progress Administration's Federal Theater. Graduatlng in 1939, she stayed another year to complete a degree in education and had to insist that the administration provide her equal opportunities to receive practice teaching assignments. In 1943, with no teaching appointments forthcoming, she moved to New York to work with the American Negro Theater; she also taught in Harlem for two years. Returning to Seattle in 1945 for a visit, she became ill and decided not to return to New York. After eleven years of trying to teach in Seattle public schools, she was hired for one semester as a substitute in speech therapy, but remained for 18 years until she became physically disabled. During this time she received additional training in working with the deaf and cerebral-palsied. Her numerous memberships have included the National Education Association, the Seattle Teachers Association, the Washington Speech and Hearing Association, NAACP, and the National Urban League. Several times she has been president of the Seattle chapter of Delta Sigma Theta. Mrs. Thomas has gathered material on the early Black settlers in the Northwest and on the development of Black communities in the state of Washington. She lectures frequently on topics in Black history and is assembling photographs, articles, and taped interviews with older members of the community.
