===================

A "corona muralis" or walled crown is a Roman condecoration and latter a heraldic element of a lot of city coats-of-arms. Here they really crowned with walls this apse.

The Romanesque monastery of Sant Miquel de Fluvià is not very well known, but quite interesting. It was founded in 1045, although the church dates from 1066. It was a dependency of St. Miquel de Cuixà abbey, and towards the s. XVII, of St. Peter of Galligans abbey. It continued as a monastery until 1835.

The magnificent Romanesque church and bell tower are the main remains of the abbey, fortified much later, in the XV Century. As part of the fortification, a moat was dug around the church, splitting and destroying the Romanesque cloister. Currently, both the cloister and its destructive moat have been excavated and partially restored. The bell tower shows what appear to be impacts from siege projectiles at the top, so it does seem to have served as a fortification, perhaps during the Catalan Civil War.

'In The Beginning...' was one of those magical moments where everything just....kind of came together at once!

I was wanting to go angelic for this one; inspired by Faux Tales' song: Prologue.

And I also want to give a shout out to Be My Mannequin? Pose Store for consistently having exactly what I need! And since I was going angel, I knew exactly what that would be: "The Die Is Cast," a single, unisex hovering pose that comes with Lucifer's Sword prop (which you can see in the picture!)

With a black eye line instead of a solid black cheek along with well defined black side streaking and no buff this plumage is consistent with a first fall male. Adult fall males would have a much fuller and well defined black cheek patch and females would generally have less well defined black side streaking with some buff in that area. First fall females may also have buff in the face.

West Virginia Central's busiest and most consistent customer is this large transload facility operated by J.F. Allen Company. The facility is tucked into the valley of the Tygart Valley River five miles west of Elkins. A large quarry here supplies stone and gravel that is trucked locally. The transload operation is what provides traffic for the railroad. Inbound is covered hoppers of rock salt used for deicing roads. Also covered hoppers of starch are unloaded here, it is then trucked to a charcoal briquette making plant operated by Kingsford at Parsons, WV. Pictured here is the crew flipping empties for loads at the salt unload with the covered storage shed on the left.

Contrast this composite with the previous post of a spring singing adult male. Both of these birds have a black eye-line rather than a solid black auricular patch so that rules out the fall adult male. Many fall adult males have no evidence of black in the throat area so the auricular area (face patch) is a good place to look to rule out a fall adult male. Once the fall adult male is ruled out, if the bird has no evidence of buff in the flanks, or anywhere else, along with having rather bold black side stripes, it is likely a first fall male. The bird on the left is consistent with a first fall male. When the fall bird has buff not only in the flanks but also in the face and back area it is most probably a first fall female. Females of any age also tend to have much duller black side striping.

🇬🇧 We are in Coddu Ecchju, Arzachena, Olbia-Tempio.

These tombs consist essentially of a burial chamber 20 to 30 metres long and two to three metres high. Originally the whole structure was covered by a mound resembling an overturned ship's hull. The front of the structure is defined by a kind of semicircle, as if to symbolise the horns of a bull, and in older tombs a finely carved stele up to four metres high was placed in the centre of the semicircle.

We've been dealing with a drought and temperatures consistently in the high 80's for the last several weeks. But today, all of that changed. Storms and rain arrived along with a substantial drop in temperatures. And it looks like the the cooler weather is here to stay.

Fall usually arrives in September in this area. But I've never seen it come so rapidly. And, coincidentally, on the equinox.

So I want to start this off by saying I am consistently over-ambitious. Take today, for example. Today, I thought to myself, in my second attempt at using my new tablet, why don't I go ahead and try to draw a hood and a magic bubble and a shirt, on top of the usual hair, lighting, and color effects that I normally do.

Mind you, I don't draw/can't draw. Part of the purpose of this tablet is to try new things. Well ... I eventually gave up and realised my hood was actually a cloud. So I made it a magical effing cloud. And by the end I was just brain tired and gave up on the shirt altogether.

Anyways, a pile-up of Kira Balestra.

Ronnie Jett, the visionary founder and creative force behind "The Riot Girls" – originally known by the whimsical moniker "The Alts" – stands out as a truly remarkable and talented musician, the undisputed driving force and creative genius behind the vibrant rock girl band.

As the band's dynamic lead guitarist, her electrifying energy alone possessed the power to captivate and ignite the hearts of everyone involved in the project, from her fellow bandmates to the roaring crowds. Yet, Ronnie’s brilliance extended far beyond her captivating stage presence, shining brightly in her visionary approach to the band’s entire operation.

It was her uncanny ability to arrange unforgettable gigs, her masterful strategies for working the crowd into a frenzy, and her innate talent for crafting an atmosphere that was consistently bright, light, and endlessly fun, filled with genuine laughter and infectious joy, that truly set her apart.

What has been one of the most consistent employers and a fixture of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Tilden Mine has a history dating all the way back to 1930. Today, it is the last operating iron ore mine in the state with neighbor Empire Mine shut down. The mine was recently given a 30 year life, which sounds good now, is still a ticking clock that worry many in the area. In the shadow of the massive tailings piles from the open pit mine, which are the tallest land mass above sea level in the State of Michigan, CN U745 make their way onto LS&I trackage with bentonite loads for the pellet manufacturing process and empty vans for loading ore to ship to Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. For now, many who see the mine as a way of life, are hoping that way of life is secure for many years to come.

“Who Killed Cock Robin” is a macabre English nursery rhyme / folk song that describes the murder and funeral of a robin. Some scholars believe that it is derived from the early Norse myth about the death of Balder, the god of summer sunlight and the incarnation of the life principle, who was slain by Hoder at Loki’s instigation. Others believe it is related to Robin Hood and the many offers of help received after his death. However, there is no direct indication in the poem to support this claim apart from the similarity of the name. In some Robin Hood tales, Robin is killed by a nun (some say Maid Marian) who bled him to death whilst feigning to tend his wounds, whereas the death in the poem is by an arrow. The story may also be related to the mysterious murder of William Rufus, King of England who was an unpopular son of William the Conqueror, found dead in the New Forest with an arrow piercing his lung.

To give you a flavour of the rhyme here’s the first few verses:-

“Who killed Cock Robin?” “I,” said the Sparrow*,

“With my bow and arrow, I killed Cock Robin.”

“Who saw him die?” “I,” said the Fly,

“With my little eye, I saw him die.”

These are followed by the chorus in my experience, as follows:-

" All the birds of the air fell a-sighing and a-sobbing,

When they heard of the death of poor Cock Robin,

When they heard of the death,

Of poor Cock Robin."

The full version has many verses and the final chorus is slightly altered. As a child in England, a short version was taught to me as a Nursery Rhyme.

[With acknowledgements to "Bird Spot"]

* The commonly suspected assassin of Rufus was a man named Sparrow.

To this day in England, if someone has a consistent run of bad luck, it is said, "He must have shot a robin."

One advantage of having consistent routes scouting for wildlife is being able to track ones that you see quite often. These two Ospreys have selected a tall light pole on an athletic field outside of our town and have been busy building a nest that would make a chiropractor looking for customers happy.

There is a back story to this photo. I have a number of photos showing the male flying through the air with corn stalks, grass and other material as he takes them to the nest where the female waits. Occasionally she will fly with him but no matter if she is not, she keeps a attentive eye on him.

She is very particular. I have seen her dive bomb him when he brings back something she doesn't like and I have a photo of her knocking him off the tower in a dispute over some dried grass he made the mistake thinking was appropriate.

In this photo, he had just brought back the bottom portion of a corn stalk and laid it down in the nest. She glided in and landed on him and looked over his shoulder to judge whether or not his latest contribution met her high standards.

When I was younger and more foolish, I experienced this type of reaction when I attempted to select items to decorate our home.

“Found the law of the oak leaves”? At the heart of Hopkins’s lifelong and consistent poetic reside the concepts of inscape and instress, thus named by Hopkins when he was an undergraduate. By “inscape” Hopkins means pattern in nature, and by “nature” he means not only oak leaves in the woods and clouds in the summer, but the more general reality of the universe, of “the way things are.” For Hopkins, inscape results from divinely intelligent creation. Catherine Phillips, one editor of Hopkins’s collected works, explains his idea of instress this way: “Unlike ‘inscape,’ which is the result of mental analysis and perception, ‘instress’ is more nebulous, often, although not always, associated with feeling; it is the identifying impression a thing can communicate to a careful and receptive observer. Hopkins also uses the term to mean ‘the stress within,’ the force which binds something or a person into a unit.”13 Those of us who have the eyes to see and the will to know can instress an inscape by not just “taking” it in, but by “stressing” it in. “The law of the oak leaves” is their inscape; Hopkins “found” that law on July 19, 1866, and instressed it.

Les Niches Parties brightens up Augustijnenrei and consists of a series of shiny masks, adorned with coloured ribbons. The installation reflects the festive atmosphere Naveau experienced during her trip to Mexico, where coloured flags liven up the streets. It also refers to the communicative function of flags: as disseminators of a warning, message or ideology.
