Had an AWESOME shoot today! A great, great friend of mine since childhood, Mike aka RAVAGE Meccagodzilla asked me to be a part of the promotional shoot for the Domo Arrigato Fundraiser for Japan. It included about 10 of the most talented individuals I've met in a looooooong time! There's nothing like sharing a great moment with fellow artists. They're having a concert to raise funds for those affected in Japan in early May. I'll post details as soon as they are available.

Anyway, Mecca has toured Japan blessing them with his lyrical talents over the last few years and along with his fellow artists, they forged some really strong bonds. When tragedy struck it was only natural for Mike and his cohorts to do all they could to help.

This is Consious. Check his twitter @iareconscious

Check out the quick video I shot for the fund: vimeo.com/22410968

8th Ave, NYC

I had just left the Time Warner Center after spending the morning with Joe McNally and the Faces of Ground Zero exhibit. (It's a good show, go see it till September 12th.)

This guy stopped me, hustling his CD. Home grown, home produced, could he get $10 for it?

What kind of music is it, I asked?

Socially-consious rap, he said. Not gangster or anything like that. Stuff that tells stories.

So we started to chat. His name is Imahn J, and he's laying down tracks out of Jersey City. Been doing it for quite a while now, and hustling it, hustling it.

He writes, produces, does artwork, sketches, skateboards. I told him he's a Renaissance man, then asked if I could shoot his portrait for my 100 Strangers project.

So, with some pretty nice light, I snapped off some frames. I gave him my card and a $20. He gave me his CD. Keep the change.

(I listened to it in the truck on the way home. Not too bad...kinda Diggable Planets-like in spots. Check Imahn out at his Myspace spot.)

it turns out putting on a fat suit really alters who you actually are.

I could write essay after essay about the location of the mind and the controversies between the notions of depth and expression in psycology, but basically, when it comes down to it, who you really are, deep down, is nothing more than how you express your self on the surface. You're sad, you're smils turns down. You're lazy, it shows. You're shy, you go for egg shell, not electric. Chemical manifestations of consiousness

Is this what the goal of "modernity" and "development" should be? Isn't it about time to start rethinking about our ways? Although I really like NYC, I can't stop thinking how much waste is constantly produced there, a problem that seems to expand along with the concept of development as if it was a requirement. (P.S. I'm glad to have used this one as my last shot on my series from my last visit to NYC ;)

The work of Isabel Rolles, a high school Visual Arts major, this piece consists of an unedited transcription of the artist's train of thought with the orginal aural version playing in a dimly lit room. From the artist:

"Art is a conversation, and it can't be cliche and it can't be small talk. . . . I decided to test the limits of what I had to say on a roll of teletype paper, unedited and unapologetic. And I fought my own self-consiousness by displaying the inner-workings of my brain."

She is a lovely lady. She only has 1 eye, the other is a socket. Its sad, yet she has taught almost every little cowboy and cowgirl how to ride a horse so she is a great girl. She wouldn't turn her head to me and I was told that they are kind of self-consious about it.

SO COOL to meet Sarah, owner of Saraveza. Wish I had consiously focussed more on her rather than the glass of Breakside Brewing's 'The Oligarch' Russian imperial #stout (which was excellent).

"Oh God! How Hillarious it is!"

When I wanted to shoot her, initially she was very consious, I kept clicking her, eventually she got irritated and slowly lost interest in what I was doing and got involved with her work! It was then, that she kept giving nice expressions! Since I was sitting across the table, so had to keep the camera zoomed in. She was moving contineously! Eventually this pose came up and I shot it!

Today was a good day. A long day, but a good day. This picture is from yesterday as I took none today (school day) - it was taken with a Canon 5D Mk II (rented from bergen hall) and a 28mm f/3.5 L lens (also rented) of the pool right next to mah dorm room.

Woke up at 7:00, 40 minutes later than usual because I hit the sack so late last night. Made sure everything was ready for class and peaced out around 7:45 for the top of the hill, rode to bergen with meghan. Today was the first time she's ever beaten me to bergen (because of traffic light complications). Class was good, but a basically review for me. I followed Strobist.com religiously back in the day, so as Christman went over soft lighting concepts and on-and-off camera flash pros and cons I may or may not have drifted in and out of consiousness despite my just-emptied bottle of delicious fresh roasted colombian hazelnut coffee.

We have an off-camera lighting assignment, for which I am sufficiently stoked. I probably won't get to work on it till next tuesday though due to my immense worklaod editing and color theory wise.

That class was followed by breakfast at Scafe (keeping in fresh, changing things up) with Claire and Taylor, then some essay revisions and a massive internal debate over whether to ride my bike to class or not. I rode, and I got there with enough time to bathroom, print out my final essay twice, and mozey on down to the classroom and only be two minutes late, which is like not late at all since it's under 15. Comp class was unusually off topic, but mostly consisted of us practicing writing about ourselves, because our next essay is inexplicably about that. Should be interesting. Design class was full of not knowing how to expand and refine my design for the project due monday, but i'll work that out this weekend. the rest of the night was filled with scafe and friends and fun as far as I can remember.

Such a big nose you have! Indiana Jones, the Flat-Coat Retriever trying to be one of those "The Dog" dogs with the big noses.

Expression of daily routine - Run Through Life, through reality with colors in the soul, with consiousness of the change in all fields around us, so in contemporary art, too.

The first of a series of six sandwich prints I made in 1998. I don't have replicates of all six of them, so I might need to take some of them out of their frame to be able to show them. It is a postmodern series: no theme, no context, no nothing, just a mix of things.

This first one is a composite picture of thistles in Spain, bathroom tiles from my parents house and a book chapter title from a book on Sonic Youth.

The main component of the picture is the landscape with thistles. I remember being in Logroño after a few weeks of cycling holidays in Spain, having a few days to rest. Marion didn't want to spent complete days on the camp site though, or wandering about in town. So we went cycling the countryside. It was terribly hot, but she insisted. It took her down, 5 km out of town, she literally dropped from her bike and lost consiousness for a couple of seconds. Then it was OK to go back to the camplsite and relax a bit.

The other pics are just superimposed on this one. Bathroom tiles in perspective, copied upside down and a picture of a book chapter on Sonic Youth that more or less characterizes the entire series of six: confusion is next.

IU remember developing this composite print on Agfa Multigrade paper. The color of the light in the printing device could be used to set the contrast, but with 4 pictures being printed in sequence on the same paper you had to crank up the contrast to the max in each of the individual prints for the end result to have acceptable contrast. Purple light, if I remember correctly.

Obviously environmentally consious

I start the new year with a piece that it's really important to me. First of all I'm really satisfied by it (not by the scan, ugh!). Second but not less important because I dedicate this piece to a Man that last year (uhm, 2018 was just 4 days ago!) and even the years before helped and inspired me very much. He was in my life by the moment I was consious, he inspired me so much in art and "pushed" me to study german and to questioning a lot of myself. He made me laugh and me made me cry. He made me fight and he made me wish I was something else. He showed me desires I never thought I could have. Today it is his birthday and this is my gift for him.

(it's always so hard to find the words to talk about these particular pieces because they are going so deep in myself that I'm often speechless...)

Marujo is the first to be hit, he falls over the machinegun while Polly makes herself scarce. It's only a shot in the shoulder, but it knocks the wind out of him and he loses consiousness...

Intent: drawing inspiration from "Emmet Gowin Edith, Danville, Virginia 1963" and several other shadow-focused nature portraits on the internet, I wanted to play around with the shadows created by different plants in a forest. I found while exploring that the most interesting shadow from the plants available was from ferns. As of this, I brought my friend back the next day when the lighting was lower and harsher (to increase the sharpness of the shadows and image contrast) and took some images.

I made the consious decision to close the aperture slightly (from wide-open f/5.6 to f/8) to capture the foreground ferns as well as the subject whilst keeping the background blurred.

I feel that the shadows create an interesting composition that almost creates a connection between the subject and surrounding flora in the forest.

Recent developments in Tibet have once again brought the Tibetan issue to the forefront of the world's consiousness, atleast for those who care. Current protests are said to be one of the largest against the Chinese government's rule in the last couple of decades.

Shown here is the latest issue of Time magazine (on the left) alongside the Feburary one. Both are in interesting contrast to each other in what they talk about, I feel. Whereas one describes the pain and eternal optimism carried by the Tibetans and their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama and their essentially peaceful and non-violent approach towards finding a solution to Chinese occupation of their homeland. The other offers an insight into the rapid growth by China and it's byproducts. Both share a peculiar relationship I feel. Some would say the latter builds upon the former and even contributes to it. Such sentiments are probably not totally without reason.

What's your take on this?

It has recently come to my attention that I was tagged by an awesome photographer by the name of Christine. Check out her photostream under the name, kitchen sink realism. She's got serious talent. Apparently, when you're tagged by another person, you're supposed to reveal more information about yourself, so here goes.

10 Basic Things About Me:

1. I'm the son of an American mother and Nigerian father.

2. I chose my Flickr name Judo because each letter in the word represents the four initials in my full name, and the 78 represents the year I was born.

3. While I am generally outgoing and personable, I can be shy,self-consious, and nervous around others.

4. I've always been considered a nerd in my family; my mom says I get the smart genes from my dad. My strongest subjects were alway English, history, and social studies yet I make my living at teaching people pre algebra and basic algebra.

5. I have five half siblings(on my father's side) One sister the same age as me, two younger sisters, and two younger brothers.

6. A big part of my being a bookish intovert growing up was due to teasing about my looks from other children and even members of my own extended family. Either people said I was a bit too chubby or my lips were too big or my nose was huge or my glasses made me look like Steve Erkle or I was just plain ugly. I always figured if I didn't have beauty, I might as well maximize my brains.

7. I try to live by my 1st middle name, Usiosefe, which loosely translated from Nigerian means--It is better to be rich in character/name than in actual riches.

8. I have a screwball sense of humor. Yeah, I'll do an impression or put something funny on my head or make a funny face as long as it makes you smile and laugh. :D

9. I'm known as somewhat of a bleeding heart. Those Feed The Children and ASPCA commericials always break my heart. Also, I just always try to see the best in people and yes, I have been burned at times, but if I can help someone in need, I will still try. I do my best to follow the The Golden Rule.

10. It is only now that I'm starting to feel comfortable in my own skin. I thought that entering my thirties was going to be a bummer, but I was so wrong. Personally, I don't think I've looked better, and I am gaining personal wisdom little by little. Who says that your life ends past 30. I'm just beginning to come into my own.

You were a good role model as to that what it means to reap what you earn, literally. You worked hard throughout your life and reaped your rewards, with a beautifully healthy family, and an impressively cultivated business that you earned through hard work and compassion. You shall be loved, missed, and forever remembered.

Goodbye.

(These photos are from Saturday's party. This is Ryan. The photo is not relevant to today, apart from its fittingness with the title.)

This morning was nice. Amy and I trespassed on these grounds beside school and took photos (I was in someone else's photos for the first time. Ever.) and then we ran out, and this 4x4 pulled up so we ran off laughing and a little frightened. It was fun.

This afternoon I went to my first funeral, for my great uncle. He was a good person, but the funeral was a sweet sendoff. I met people I didn't know I was related to. I had a nice time.

- I haven't been a good contact recently, forgive me.

- There's something rare going on - you haven't seen my face in awhile. I'm feeling self consious I suppose.

Natalie Shell ponders the change in our feelings toward what we consider long term:

“Long term” thinking means 1 year, maybe 2…not 5 years, not 20, or 100...

natalieshell.com/2010/12/21/on-the-increasing-speed-of-ch...

- Thinking 20 and 100 years both backwards and forward is becoming a more and more important innovation tool for me. I see that splitting my thinking into a thousand pieces and then a more or less random distribution of the pieces into emergent networks has formed an unavoidable milestone within the process of learning to take longer term persperctives. Everything being cut short is not necessarily bad at all when we consiously put effort in really using it as a method of enabling the appearance of different behaviour, attitudes and thinking within the (working) cultures we have impact on - and who have impact on us. The past three years have convinced me that concrete (even very) small daily changes in behaviour gradually automatically cause changes in attitudes which then gradually produces different thinking. It's a very much more efficient process than trying to switch the thoughts first - which is how almost 100% of our education systems currently are built... To unconstruct - that's why we need networked methods encouraging critcal thinking -> attitude change -> change in behaviour -> corrective actions in our (working) cultures. Becoming connective means making the transfer, transformation and transitions real - starting the other way around compared with the way we've used to understand how teaching / coaching is organized. Things to be unlearned include: expecting course kinds of settings, linear perception of time, working mostly with people you already know, getting immediate and steady results...

When we learn to constantly carry in mind how we are now impacted by decisions made 20 and 100 years ago - and how our choices impact to the 2030's and all the way to the 22nd century - innovation projects become obsolete. => Innovations have become parts of our everyday actions.

e Court and Gardens, inside the house. The plasterwork was decorated by a Hare Krishna group in the early 80's. It was decided the keep the bright colours as removing them would harm the plasterwork.

"The chapel was soon turned into a temple room, a printing press was moved to the site and a novice training programme and a school were established. In Croome Court’s Red Wing, the devotees installed a television editing studio, with sand bags in the ceiling to provide soundproofing.

There was a primary school for the children of the devotees and Croome became a worldwide centre for the training of students in Krishna consiousness.

About 150 devotees lived on the premises at Croome including monks, nuns and some married couples.

From 1982, a split in the movement and consequent lack of manpower meant that the college was becoming too expensive to maintain and, in June 1984, the movement withdrew from the property.

With the closure of their school, some operations were moved to other parts of the country with some families returning to the previous headquarters near Watford.

Traces of their residence at Croome can still be seen in some decoration around the house, especially in the Dining Room. It was repainted in vibrant colours which can still be seen today and are complimented by our new exhibit showing some of Croome's porcelain collection."
