This is a poor-quality photo from a Japanese fashion magazine I've had since 1996. I have never seen this photo online so I thought I would contribute it to the Internet. It's as breathtaking, to me, as the Zapruder film: the exact split-second The New Look was first seen.

Outside the windows the temperature had fallen to 13 degrees below zero; it was the worst winter Paris had endured since 1870. Despite all that, the feeling inside those rooms on February 12, 1947 was pure pleasure, positively voluptuous, and legend has it that as more and more models swirled past, those women seated in that photogragh began to self-consiously tug on the hems of their knee-length (and with that very moment terribly out-of-style) skirts.

Jeff's dad owns a bakery and he was filling in this Sunday at thier booth at the local Farmer's Market. I found him sitting on a curb chatting it up with a friend and in an obviously good mood. Both of them were easy to approach and thought the project was interesting, and were enthsiastic about participating. Jeff had never posed for a photograph. He was quite a character with a great sense of humor. It's an unusual subject that can just go on with a prior conversation or their other buisness while being photographed by a guy 4 feet away withouht any sign of self consiousness or insecurity, and yet pose, smile, etc. for the camera. I took this shot a month or so ago and hesitated to post it becasue there seems to be so few portraits in the group that aren't "serious", but this shot so well captures Jeff's personality and spirit. In the end, I think that is what a portrait is supposed to do, so I think it warrants making my $15. This picture is #15 in my 100 strangers project. Taken yesterday at a memorial site for September 11.

I made a consious effort to not watch the news or any of the special broadcasts about that terrible day.

However I did want to devote some part of my day to remember.

We were the only ones here. It was quiet and peaceful.

I wonder if my affinity for bolloywood movies of the 80s is connected to how the glimpes of Bombay within them, undo all the changes that have turned Bombay to what it now has become.

Just as looking at the sea, makes me feel i'm back to the Bombay that was once innocent. When Peddar Road was not such a fuss. When Chowpatty was all that lovers ever looked forward to. When frankie was still a novel thing. When rain transformed Dadar Parsi Colony into a secret garden. When going to Radio Club was the equivalent of walking into the Hyatt. When Dadar kabootar khana was a delight [just as in Parinda] rather than an eyesore. When the share bazar didnt bloody matter. When Haji Ali still had a roundabout. When the Air India building glowed green in the dark night, and impressed many a visitor / native alike. When 'Energee' and 'GoldSpot' did more business than any other drink. When Colaba wasnt a red light area. When Standard 2000 was still keeping company to the Fiats and Ambassadors.

For everything has changed. The name of the city, the airports and train stations, the traffic, the nightlife [or the lack of], the social scene, the roads, the Skyline, the variety of cars, the shopping destinations, the attitudes, the prices...everything. Except the sea...

Thats my fix. Old Bollywood films and the sea.

[Text rearranged to form the consious feeling that had been written in unconsiousness]

What started as a pair of patched denim pants has now become a skirt with the addition of wool, corduroy and linen patch pieces.

"....rie....hérie....Chérie!"

"...eergh...what, what's happening?..."

"Chérie, that couch is old. I don't think it would make a good bed...."

"How long has it been?..."

"....north of 10 hours. Cousin's lucky to be alive. If you didn't arrive sooner he'd...he'd be something I've seen too much of already...."

"This is a bit too familiar..."

"Indeed. Like the first time I met Cousin. You bringing him to me, clinging onto life after being attacked by monsters."

"He's gonna be okay though, right?"

"He should. I think he should stay here for the night, though. Just to be sure."

"Then I'll stay, too."

"Chérie, please. You really should go home, Cousin's in good han--"

"I'm not leaving."

"...well, can you help me then?"

"With what?"

"Cousin's consious but...he's not talking to me. Something happened to him. Besides being mugged that is. He's just standing there, staring off into the distance...."

"....he tried to fght. He lost. To him, that's gonna hurt more than anything."

"Well, what do I do? I don't want to see him like this."

"Dr. Vicent, you're a great doctor and all, but there's just some things you can't heal."

"But that's what I live for....I've traveled the world and I've always healed those who needed it. Taking away pain is my life..."

"You've traveled the world?..."

"Third world, but yes. This city is starting to look like what I left behind. Countless innocents like Cousin in pain and savages just giving more, hurting whatever they find....."

"....I'll talk to him. he'll listen to me. You can go home if you want, we'll be fine..."

"I can't leave my clinic as long as patients are still here, chérie. And all things considered....I'm afraid to leave...."

"I understand..."

So my nephews got together for some sk8'ing. Slap those boards down and showing me some moves.

Got an idea to put them together back to back and try for some super sharp looking attitude.

Quite interesting shooting 14 year old boys, they can tend to be a bit self consious.

That is a skateboard ramp behind them.

Trying some strobist stuff! Sunlight camera left, 430ex off camera right.

So our story begins!

I wasn't going to post these so close together, but I decided to go ahead for two reasons:

1. there is a slight hole in the next part that I need to finish writing, hopefully this will motivate me to finish

2. Katrina's head shipped!!!

so I anticipate being kind of obsessed with her for the next little bit :D

Ummm there's a part to this that I've sort of hinted at many times but never actually said before. It was never supposed to be some big secret, I just never found the right time to tell you guys. Part of that was because I didn't want it to be the defining part of Knox's character, part of it was because well frankly I got a little shy when I first posted her backstory and never included it... uh you'll see what I'm talking about...

btw I stopped mid photo shoot and spent like 15 min trying to decide what to write on Knox's note, I'm sorry, just seemed to fit how she feels about the whole thing...

I'm anticipating Knox getting a lot of hugs for this one <3

A Boy Named Alice - Part 1:

Knox had been on the job for six months. Red-rover's release was getting closer, there were signs it was already being tested on the streets. Knox had been undercover with a local gang, she had sucessfully convinced them that she was one of them. She had tons of dirt on lower members but there was a core group of six men that would significatly slow the release if she could just get them all in prison. The gang trusted her and she had information to pin all of them except one guy; the ringleader. He never got his hands dirty, but that was going to change. With the Red-rover's release so close he would have to slip up and Knox was ready. Until, her boss at RIOT pulled her out. He felt things were getting too dangerous, she had done excellent work and he didn't want her in unreasonable danger. Knox was furious, he was cheating, pulling her out of the game before she could win. She was so mad she forgot to tell her boss about the strange guy who had been looking into RIOT computers that morning. He had said his name was Telstar, but refused to tell her what he was trying to do and took off quickly.

As she left RIOT headquarters she ran into Lin. Lin had no idea what was happening with Knox's work so she didn't think anything of it when she said she was going back undercover that afternoon. Knox didn't bother to check with her team first, if she had, she would have known that they had already released rumours that her character had been arrested. She would have realized what she was walking back into...

She met the core gang six men, all larger, tougher, stronger than herself at a warehouse on the outskirts of town. She was used to meeting at places like that, it had never occured to her before how isolated she was from help. She tried to lie her way out of the situation, but they broke her down quickly. They tied her to a chair, they beat her and put cigerettes out on her skin until she told them her name and that she worked for RIOT. The fact that she worked for RIOT and not the government, the police, or the military, put her in the worst possible situation. It meant that the gang had free reign to kill her, to humiliate her, to destroy her, to use her shattered body to send a message to all other RIOT agents to stay out of the game, and they did just that.

The moment they confirmed that she worked for RIOT a video camera was produced, they made her introduce herself before they filmed everything that came after to be sure that whomever found the tape would know exactly what happens to caught agents.

Over the course of the three hours that they had Natalie, they beat her, they tortured her, they raped her, they made her preform vile acts, they broke her. They broke her so completly that the fearless, optimistic, life-loving, Natalie welcomed her inevable death. She was only sad that her parents would find out what had happened to her. When they were done as a last cruelty they told her she could go if she could walk to the door. They roughly redressed her, and pulled her up onto her broken leg. As she stood wobbling one of the men came behind her with a crowbar. What was supposed to be the final hit, missed when her legs gave out, and instead of smashing in the side of her head he only knocked a small hole in her skull. They couldn't be bothered to stand her again, so they gave her a couple final kicks and left her to bleed out on the floor. Before they left they placed the memory stick on her stomach, ensuring whoever found her body would know exactly what happened.

Natalie was rapidly loosing consiousness, she knew she was dying she accepted that, but she didn't want her parents especially her dad to see what they had done to her. She was too weak to throw the memory stick away from herself so she did the only thing she could think of she stuffed it down her pants.

Back at RIOT, Lin ran into Walter in the hall. Walter asked if Natalie had been mad about her job being cancelled, Lin was confused. It only took them a minute to realize what had happened.

They got the location from Natalie's boss and rushed to the warehouse taking extra RIOT agents with them. Lin charged in first with her back up, she didn't have time to look at Knox as she made sure the gang was gone. Walter and Landon were the first ones to Natalie. Walter surpressed tears while he pressed his shirt against her head to stop the bleeding. She had stopped breathing just seconds before they arrived. Landon pounded on her chest to get her heart going again. A helicopter took her to the city's main hospital.

On the way, the paramedics cut her clothing off. The little memory stick with the tape on it fell out of her pants. They didn't have time to do anything with it as they rushed to stablize her.

Working at the hospital that night was Lin's older brother, Amir. A certified genious Amir worked in emergency because he found it the most interesting, but he was studied in every medical field that captured his attention. There wasn't a better doctor for the job. He knew Knox through his sister and when he saw her name on the incoming list he knew it was bad.

From the moment the paramedics passed her over to him it was a race to get her stable. They passed the tape over to Amir with Knox. He watched it by himself in a locked room whenever there was a break in surgeries. Ironically the tape made to mock her death, ended up helping to save Knox's life by showing Amir exactly what injuries to look for. Before he had even finished the tape he found several potentially life threatening injuires that he may not have found in time otherwise. Having a RIOT agent for a sister he understood that the politics were different from the average citizen when it came to reporting crimes, he didn't know what to do with the tape. He felt it was wrong to give the tape to her parents when she was still so close to death so he decided to keep it secret until he could ask Knox what she wanted done with it.

After almost a full day in surgery and more than a few times when they thought they would lose her, Knox was stable in the intensive care unit. She had drips, a catheter, and a tube down her throat. Half of her head had been shaved and a metal plate put in to replace the hole in her skull. She had pins in her leg, and on several ribs. She lost a section of her small intestions, and an overy, she was extremely lucky to keep both kidneys. She was black and blue with bruises all over her body. She had cuts and burns. She was so weak her parents were only able to view her from behind glass for fear of infection.

She woke up the first time two days later, she was only awake long enough to learn that she hadn't died, was in hospital, and that Amir was her doctor. She found the latter the least surprising.

When she was awake enough to ask questions, through a notepad since they wouldn't take the tube out yet, she asked about the tape. Amir told her he was the only one who had seen it. Knox swore him to secrecy. It was too much for her to keep the tape herself so she left with Amir, making him swear that he would keep it safe and secret.

Hearing the events she realized she had gotten lucky, no one but Amir knew the full extent of what had happened to her, only that she had been beaten badly. No one else knew that she had been raped, no one knew what they had made her do. In her eyes the best possible situation, it was her fault she had been in that situation, she was responcilble and she didn't want anyone to know what had happened.

Still she was worried that if her parents or Lin got a good look at her or her injuries, now that the swelling was going down the bruises on her throat were beginning to resemble a hand, and the cuts on her shoulder a bite mark, they would piece things together. So she locked out all visitors.

Amir didn't really know how to explain to her parents or Lin that she didn't want them to visit, but he begged them to understand that since she was an adult paitent he had to respect her wishes.

Natalie spent a month and a half in hospital. Amir wanted her to stay much longer, but she began experiencing nightmares, panic attacks, and flashbacks. It got so bad she reached a breaking point and couldn't take it. One night she got out of her bed in a suicide attempt, but her legs gave out before she could get anywhere. The nurses found her huddled in the corner of the room bleeding from ripped stitches and refusing all help. Amir made a deal that if she never attempted to hurt herself again he would let her leave as soon as he could. So Natalie behaved.

Things that she had never delt with before in her life were now any everyday occurance. She had to take a regiment of pills to keep her modified insides working. Pills for pain, pills to keep off infections, and after she had a panic attack when a male nurse touched her, pills for anxiety. They also rearranged the staff so she never came in contact with men outside of Amir.

Dispite his better judgement, he was in a tricky situation trying to balance his friendship with Knox against what he wanted for her as a doctor, Amir kept his word and gave Knox clearence to leave as soon as she was stable enough to be on her own.

Knox left for her apartment in the middle of the night. She took a taxi there to avoid her parents and Lin. She was still covered in bruises, now yellow along with blue. She could only take a few hobbled steps at a time, but she managed to get into her apartment. She locked the door, hobbled over to the couch and fell asleep.

She woke up to paniced texts and missed calls from Lin. She text her back, just to let her know she was alive, then ordered a pizza. She stayed in her isolated bubble, laying on the couch watching children's television shows and eating takeout, for another two weeks.

When Knox finally re-emerged she tried her best to seem like her old self. She met with Lin and visited her parents. She seemed eager to get back to work. Her bosses at RIOT had a meeting to discuss her future there. Her days of undercover work were done, she couldn't be trusted to follow orders, and she wasn't in any state to do it anyway. They talked about letting her go, but Lin and Walter testified on her behaf and saved her job. She was demoted and her pay was cut, but she was still a RIOT agent. It was the best she could have hoped for.

The pay cut was a problem, without the extra pay she couldn't afford her apartment. Lin suggested she take on a roommate for the spare bedroom. Knox agreed and posted signs around town.

One of the first people to respond was a young man named Alice Mercury, who often went by him nickname, Telstar. It took Knox a while to remember that Telstar was who she had run into the morning before everything had happened. His apperence had changed, he seemed messier, both physically and mentally. He had trouble forming full sentences, he would drift off half way through. He would often stare off into space and had trouble compelting simple tasks, but most interesting to Knox, the whites of his eyes were almost completly red.

Dispite Lin's protests, she took him on as a roommate. Telstar was an odd roommate, he often just sat around for days. Then unexpectidly he would disappear for hours, only to come back looking distraught. It took Knox a while to notice. She was having her own problems. Her body was healing, but her mind only seemed to be getting worse. During the day she did her best to surpress it. She used her acting ablilities to hide her pain, everyone told her how amazing she was doing, but she felt like a timebomb. She couldn't have one night stands anymore, she couldn't have any sex anymore, she paniced the moment a man went to touch her. Amir begged her to get help every chance he got, but she ignored him.

She started to develop her own coping methods. She couldn't explain why, because she had never wanted a piercing in her life, but when she walked by a tattoo shop she found herself drawn inside. The sting of the needle, toying with the new metal, took her mind away from other things. It became a pattern that after every bad panic attack she would go see her piercer and get a new hole. Her parents and Lin were very concerned about her changing apperence, but there wasn't anything they could do except encourage her to do other things.

What she really needed was a new project, a new goal to work towards...

Architects; David Chipperfield Architects, 2006. Competition 2002.

David Chipperfield's composition is always seen in context with the grand white classical building of National Schiller Museum built in 1903, but hardly any attention is drawn to the 'concrete bunker' like building on the other side, balancing Modern Classicism of Chipperfield. I feel that these three buildings should be looked together as a witty study of (not sure if it was consious or not) the progression of architectural and political history of the last century.

Still waiting for my charger. He probably ran off with my cell phone. Those two rapscallions >.<

Ride The Lightning

Guilty as charged

But damn it, it ain't right

There's someone else controlling me

Death in the air

Strapped in the electric chair

This can't be happening to me

Who made you god to say

\"I'll take your life from you!!\"

Flash before my eyes

Now it's time to die

Burning in my brain

I can feel the flame

Wait for the sign

To flick the switch of death

It's the beginning of the end

Sweat chilling cold

As I watch death unfold

Consiousness is my only friend

My fingers grip with fear

What am I doing here?

Flash before my eyes

Now it's time to die

Burning in my brain

I can feel the flame

Someone help me

Oh please God help me

They are trying to take it all away

I don't want to die

Time moving slow

The minutes seem like hours

The final curtain all I see

How true is this?

Just get it over with

If this is true, just let it be

Wakened by horrid scream

Freed from this frightening dream

Flash before my eyes

Now it's time to die

Burning in my brain

I can feel the flame.

Women are just under 50% of the Indian population. They have considerable involvement in water collection and a key role in conserving and maintaining its quality. Depleting water resources have impacted women severely in terms of longer walk and more work, s they are principal collectors of water. Dungarpur is in rural Rajasthan.

Many of my pictures explore people and their lives

Photographing Indian villagers is an extraordinary experience: they meet your eye with indoviduality, not fear and self-consiousness about "how they look".

PERSONAL FUN FACT written by my sister: We believe we've had this doll since 2014 and that we acquired her with our 1965 Francie doll whose hair was cut into a bob. At any rate, I am almost positive she came from that indoor flea market and in a small bin of vintage dolls--and that was the only bin that matched that description. We did not previously document her on Flickr with the rest of our collection, nor did we have her inventoried with our other dolls. We thought, upon first seeing her, that she looked like a very tiny Barbie. However, she was stamped C.P.G., so we didn't think she was Barbie related. We never inventoried or documented her with our other dolls because her molded feet made us see her as some sort of McDonald's toy or action figure. However, her face and hair, for some reason, made me think of Shayla, Shelly's first SuperStar Barbie. Not having the heart to turn her out and send her off to the Salvation Army with McDonalds toys and other stuff we find in doll bins, I vouched for keeping her as a toy for my KidKore Katie doll. She has appeared in our photo thumbnail for "Consious Collecting" and was sitting on my Stacie bunk bed in our first episode of "As Told By Dollies." Yet I didn't know who she was. In spring of 2019, a friend of Shelly's was posting Glamour Gals on Flickr and the molded feet nagged at me. Where had I seen those before? I asked Shelly if she remembered the tiny doll with the pretty face and molded feet that we kept as a doll for my Katie. She was dubious at first that this doll was, in fact, a Glamour Gals doll. However, when she compared her to the photos recently posted, she found an exact match! She was even wearing the right outfit. It's great that this doll's name is "Shara." It sounds a lot like Shayla and her strange resemblance to Shayla is why I found myself liking her. I think she's pretty cool. Though the Topper Dawn dolls are cooler--a little older and the shoes that come off, these are still quite interesting. Mostly, I still like her face as much as I did circa 2014. Her navy eyes and vibrant red lips combined with her blonde locks make her greatly resemble Barbie. Her coloring has also fared really well. The photos don't do her stunning face justice!

Inspired to be more consious of the dumpster love, thanks Gavin (aka Sedge808 - www.flickr.com/people/sedge808/).

I had bought a dress mail order which I needed to return. I got out of the car and was 'okay'. I said to myself to just concentrate on my walking and no-one would notice me or give me a second look. I didn't realise that the mail order stuff still has security tag, so as I walked in, I set off all the security alarms! Everyone looking at me, security guard leaped up, bells ringing! AGHHH I was suddenly SO self consious and lost all my 'cool'! I'd have run out except the alarm would have gone off again! Anyway, I explained to the security guard, then just found a female shop assistant to help me. The rest of the dresses had the same design of zip, which was too fidly for me, so I swapped it for the one in the photos. Certainly won't forget that shopping trip in a hurry!

I love trying on clothes whilst shopping. Here, I put this dress on in a changing booth and came out into the store and took this selfie. I always feel self consious taking these pics so its not the best. I must blend in well as nobody took any notice of me at all.

Writing Knox's backstory was fun, so I thought I'd do VC's too, it's not as exciting as Knox's, but I like her, well I like her character... her bjd form desperately needs a new faceup and wig...

VC or Vivid Color's real name is Lin Washburne. Lin was born in Hong Kong, she spent the first four years of her life in an orphanage and knows almost nothing about her birth parents. She does know that her mother was "very young", she knows nothing about her father. Many prospective parents both from China and abroad looked at her, but all of them seemed to loose interest after talking to the people who ran the orphanage. Finally the management at the orphange changed and Lin was adopted by a Canadian family.

She still wonders if there is something wrong with her.

Both of her parents are university professers. She also has an older brother named Amir who was adopted from India as a new born. Lin and Amir are very close. Amir respects Knox and thinks she is very good for his sister.

Lin always excelled in school, especially in the private highschool she went to where she was allowed to skip a grade.

Lin has always been prone to gaining weight she's very self consious about it and stays extremely active to keep it off. As a kid she took dance and gymnastics, in highschool she martial arts, as an adult she runs.

Lin and Amir were raised to take an active role in changing the world for the better. Amir chose to become a doctor and when he got bord of that (he's a very smart guy) a surgen, Lin joined RIOT.

Her first couple of years she was partenered with Knox's father, before being promoted. Her current job title is classified. When someone asks she tells them to watch a couple James Bond films and they'll get the idea. Knox did find out that she is on a first name basis with the world president.

Lin has been in a serious relationship with her current partener Landon for several years. He's not very fond of Knox, but tolerates her for Lin's sake. Landon comes from England and spends a lot of his time there, he bought Lin a puppy to keep her company when he's gone, she wishes he would just propose already.

Lin has been worried about Knox, her friend hasn't been the same since she was fired, she's keeping a secret and won't tell, Amir knows but he's not talking either, and now she's dragged her into another crazy plan...

Some bonus random facts about her:

She's a health nut, and loves green tea

She's also a neat freak

She dresses very casually when she's not working, but has a wardrobe full of cocktail dresses for work

Since she is asian and knows martial arts she occasionally gets called a ninja, it is her biggest pet peeve, naturally Knox does it all the time just to piss her off

Her RIOT sea creature is a jellyfish

Back in December (2008) we had a weekend of very pretty, light snowfall before the city got buried for two weeks. Since snow-covered streets around Seattle were a new sight for me, I decided to head to Gasworks Park to investigate and take some photos. I've been trying to make more and more use of my Large Format camera, so I figured this was a good opportunity to try. Since the color palette was pretty muted I decided to shoot some Kodak TMAX 100 black and white film anticipating I'd be working in black and white even if I shot digitally.

What I didn't entirely anticipate was that this park was incredibly busy that day with people tobogganing down the hills on the light dusting of snow. The place where I set up here was quiet when I started setting up but soon became the base of a toboggan run and I felt my time was limited. Since I had a little trouble with the front tilt to get the foreground path and the old gasworks plant all in focus, I decided to to the opposite and through the tilt backwards a bit to limit the plane of focus to one that cut through the old plant. The objective anyway, was to keep the plant fairly sharp while throwing the foreground well out of focus (similar to the technique used to create tilt-shift miniature fakes).

I still have a ton to learn with my Tachihara, but I do find it a lot of fun to shoot, even if you can't help but feel self-consious with a darkcloth over your head at the base of a toboggan run.

By the way, you can see this negative hanging up here from an earlier shot of my 'darkroom'.
