Congress Hall, part of the Independence Park National Historic Site, a national landmark district (1789). It was the seat of the United States Congress from December 6, 1790 to May 14, 1800. Congress was built to become the Philadelphia County Courthouse. After the Constitution was ratified, Congress passed the Residence Act, allowing for the creation of Washington, DC. Robert Morris convinced Congress to, in the meantime, return to Philadelphia. As part of the Residence Act, Philadelphia was again named the capital of the United States for ten years. The city hoped that the plans to establish a city on the Potomac would fail, and that Philadelphia would become the permanent capital. Despite an expansion of Congress Hall, Congress decided to move the national government on May 14, 1800. During its ten years as capitol, Congress Hall admitted three states, inaugurated two presidents, established the First Bank of the United States, the Federal Mint, and the Navy. In 1870, Pennsylvania ordered the destruction of the building, although this was never followed through (and repealed in 1895). The Colonial Dames of America (a precursor to the Daughter of the American Revolution) restored the Senate chamber in 1896. The local chapter of the American Institute of Architects completed the restoration in 1934.

La carta que me enviaron del Congreso invitándome a la comparecencia tenía un pequeño problema: la fecha de la comparecencia era el 2, pero la carta salió del Congreso el 3, a pesar de aparecer firmada el 29. No pasó nada, me habían avisado con total eficiencia por correo electrónico, pero me resultó curioso... :-) Ah, y la enviaron con motorista XD

5) Keeping with the hospital trend, Congress Inn has its own history with the dead, dying and undead. The small motel is located in Nashville where it once served as a Civil War hospital. Guests have woken up unable to move as if some being was sitting on their stomach, whereas others report seeing specters in the hall or hearing voices in the bedrooms. Legend has it that the proprietors ran out of room to bury the dead during the war, and instead cemented the bodies into the basement walls. Creepy.
