The American Folklife Center (AFC) at the Library of Congress is inviting Flickr community members participating in holidays at the end of October and early November – Halloween, All Souls Day, All Saints Day, Dia de los Muertos – to photograph hayrides, haunted houses, parades, trick-or-treating and other celebratory and commemorative activities to contribute to a new collection documenting contemporary folklife in America. Between Oct. 22 and Nov. 5, AFC invites you to document in photographs how holiday celebrations are experienced by friends, family and community, then post photos to your Flickr account under a creative commons license with the tag #FolklifeHalloween2014. Guidelines on how to participate are here: blogs.loc.gov/folklife/2014/10/share-your-photos-of-hallo...

We flew into Chicago and spent a few days there on the front end enjoying the wonderful art and architecture of the city.

This backstage staircase goes all the way up to the ceiling, but I only got about halfway up before security noticed and kindly asked me to discontinue that particular adventure :-D

I have lived in Washington DC almost twenty years and have visited most of the museums, buildings and attractions at one time or another. To me, the most impressive is the Thomas Jefferson Building, the oldest and most recognizable Library of Congress building.

I have visited the LOC a few times but never attempted to get photos until my last visit. The scale is simply overwhelming. My lack of experience for indoor, architectural photography did not do justice to the grandeur of the place, but hopefully this short series will be of some interest. To me it's a must-see for any visit to DC.

Another shot from the "Main Reading Room." View LARGE for much more detail

Congress Hall was constructed in 1816 as a boarding house for guests at the new seaside resort of Cape May. Its proprietor, Thomas H. Hughes, called it "The Big House." Locals, thinking it too big to be successful, called it "Tommy's Folly which is now the name of the coffee shop at the hotel. In 1828, when Hughes was elected to the House of Representatives, he changed the name of his hotel to Congress Hall. A large scall restoration was begun in 1995, and today, Congress Hall is again a fully functioning resort hotel.

Looking down Congress St. Would like to go back and get another shot of this, except with no cars coming towards me and during the blue hour.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

The Great Hall of the Library of Congress - Thomas Jefferson Building.

The Library of Congress is the de facto national library of the United States and the research arm of the United States Congress. Located in three buildings in Washington, D.C., it is the largest library in the world by shelf space and holds the largest number of books.[2][3] The head of the Library is the Librarian of Congress, currently James H. Billington.

The Library of Congress was established by Congress in 1800 with a budget of $5,000, and was housed in the United States Capitol for most of the 19th century. After much of the original collection had been destroyed during the War of 1812, Thomas Jefferson sold the library 6487 books, his entire personal library, in 1815 [4][5]. After a period of decline during the mid-19th century the Library of Congress began to grow rapidly in both size and importance after the American Civil War, culminating in the construction of a separate library building and the transference of all copyright deposit holdings to the Library. During the rapid expansion of the 20th century the Library of Congress assumed a preeminent public role, becoming a "library of last resort" and expanding its mission for the benefit of scholars and the American people.
