My Mom had to put down her 14-year-old Chihuahua, Sara, this morning due to congestive heart failure. I took this photo of Sara 10 days ago when I was at Denton, with my folks, visiting my daughter at UNT. Sara was a feisty, rather bitey dog, but she will be very much missed. Sara had spent almost an entire day struggling for each breath. However, before her final decline, she rallied enough to eat her breakfast with gusto and have one last trip outside. It's always sad to lose a dog, even when it is the right thing to do. Sara passed in my Mom's arms, with my Dad right next to her.

The congested street in Old Delhi

As you can see here, the cycle taxi drivers, passersby and a carrier walked through a dusty street at a brisk pace.

The fresh orange juice shop in the street, serving a cup of orange juice for just 5 rupees, re-energized many exhausted people in traveling.

You are able to feel at peace only there.

Sugar loading complete, to give us energy for the rest of our trek back into the congested back streets of the Amritsar old town, we spot this corner 'gurudwara' with a stainless steel dome. Our guide mentioned something about it which I do not immediately recall. The stainless steel dome did give the gurudwara a very attractive look, but it's beauty was obscured by the grey plaster of the freshly rebuilt buildings behind it. A gurudwara is a Sikh place of worship. The Harmandir Sahib or Golden Temple for instance is one of the largest Gurudwaras in India. Other large gurudwaras in India are one in Delhi and another one in Nanded in Western India. (Amritsar, Punjab, northern India, Nov. 2017)

In 2005, a £500 million restoration plan was announced by Network Rail; it was approved by Camden London Borough Council on 9 November 2007.[17] The plan includes a thorough restoration and reglazing of the arched roof of the original station and the removal of the cramped and congested 1972 extension, to be replaced by an open-air plaza, scheduled for completion in 2013.[18][19]

A new semi-circular departures concourse, opened to the public on 19 March 2012,[20][21] has been built in the space directly to the west of the station behind the Great Northern Hotel, some outbuildings of which have been demolished. Designed by John McAslan and built by Vinci,[22] it is intended to cater for much-increased passenger flows and provide greater integration between the intercity, suburban and underground sections of the station, facilitating interchange between King's Cross and St Pancras. Departing passengers use the new concourse; arriving passengers initially exited the station from the old concourse on Euston Road, but now go through the new public square. The architect claims that the roof is the longest single-span station structure in Europe. The semi-circular building has a radius of 54 metres and over 2,000 triangular roof panels, half of which are glass.[18]

The steel structure of the roof, engineered by Arup, has been described as being "like some kind of reverse waterfall, a white steel grid that swoops up from the ground and cascades over your head".[18]

The land between and behind the two stations is being redeveloped with nearly 2,000 new homes, 486,280 m2 (5,234,000 sq ft) of offices and new roads as King's Cross Central.

As part of this restoration programme, refurbished offices have opened on the east side of the station to replace the ones lost on the west side, and a new platform 0 opened underneath them on 20 May 2010. To prevent exhaust fumes from entering the ventilation system, no diesel trains are permitted to use this platform. The platform occupies the space of a former taxi rank, and was originally to be known as platform Y, but was renamed to avoid the confusion of having both lettered and numbered platforms. When the refurbishment is complete, all the platforms will be renumbered, the new one becoming platform 1.[23] Although there have been plans for a new platform for some time to increase capacity, it was the need to minimise disruption during restoration when other platforms would be temporarily out of use that led to this being built.

The restoration project was awarded a European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Award in 2013.[24

Speed gate is part of the access control system and is one of the important components of modern entrance and exit control. The door wing is driven by the control system and automatically opens and closes. The operating mode can be selected by programming: The door wing is automatically opened as long as the verification entrant is authorized. In an emergency, when the flow of people is congested, under the strong stamping of the crowd, the door wing can be pushed forward to safely evacuate the flow of people without causing accidental casualties. This requires a system that allows some users to pass through directly but directs others in another direction, for instance towards a reception desk or another part of the building.

I was truly surprised at the sheer emptiness of the landscape just outside the congested and crowded magapolis of Bangkok. Seen here are salt pans on the road from Bangkok to Sakon Sathorn. A simple evaporation process is followed in salt production, using only the sun and wind power, not very different now than how it has been done for generations. The sea water in the salt pans evaporates and as it gets more concentrated, leaves behind the salt deposit. This is is then raked, arranged in piles and then moved to areas closer to a central processing location,The raking by hand is to arrange the salt into long rows, which are then cut into smaller ridges before being gathered into pyramid shapes. (Samut Sakhorn on the outskirts of Bangkok, Thailand, Oct. 2018)

...not a great shot, but a good photo idea. I was stuck in traffic crossing one of the major north-south avenues in Midtown Manhattan. Traffic was severely congested and I could see taillights all the way down the avenue. So I got a quick shot before passing. It was a bit dark, but as a pedestrian this type of shot should be easier to snap.

Rather scrappy but very large old coontie. There must be hundreds of apices, all congested together, in a patch over a metre in diameter. It is a male.

Bangkok, Thailand - Jul 30, 2015. Traffic at downtown in Bangkok, Thailand. Bangkok is the second-most congested city in the world.

I just read more on these: "... Mathews established a new housing paradigm that was a welcome departure from the congested tenements of the Lower East Side. The three story apartment buildings were simple, sturdy, and relatively cheap to construct, and therefore became the standard for subsequent tenement house construction. Exhibited at the 1915 Panama Pacific Fair in San Francisco, the Mathews Model Flats were heralded as an exceptional achievement.

In keeping with the 1905 fire code for this part of Queens, these attached row buildings were composed of load-bearing masonry walls. Though every block appears the same at first glance, each row was artfully designed with its own intricate corbelling pattern made from variations of light and dark yellow brick from the Kreischer Brick Manufacturing Company in Staten Island. In another attempt to distinguish one block from another, the houses boast a variety of elaborate Romanesque or Renaissance Revival details.

Over 1,000 Mathews Model Flats were constructed between 1900 and 1925. The New York Times reported that the apartment houses, “if placed side by side, would make a line over four miles long.” In December 2008, the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation of the Ridgewood North Historic District which is composed of the earliest examples of Mathews Model Flats." www.mas.org/the-mathews-model-flats-a-place-that-matters/

We fortunately did not encounter more electric tuk tuks passing each other. A couple of them did roll past though, but in one direction only, which gave us about three feet clearance between us and the passing tuk tuk. Our walk through this particular uber narrow street is almost coming to an end, and although we walked past a few more, they were not as congested. It's very rare to see lanes more narrow than this! The shiny decorations hanging overhead gave a very Moslem Eid festival like vibe to the place, but this was local commerce at it's thickest, no celebratory mood here! We are out of the congested Shanghai old town district now and are now walking towards the Shanghai Huangpu River ferry terminal for the river cruise. These last few shots are of the shops on the outer periphery of the old town. (I had featured stores on the periphery from across the street in the beginning of this album). Although I was done with trinkets shopping as I had spent nearly eight days in China already, I simply couldn't get enough of these lovely gift shops, with their sheer variety and exuberant colours! We have already covered the old town district of Shanghai in some detail earlier in this album, so I will save you the commentary and simply let you enjoy the view. (Shanghai, China, May 2017)
