Our summer resident. I think I have never posted a photo of this species. In case you are wondering, our black-chinned hummers appear in March and depart in August, weeks before the last females or immatures are seen in early October. They are widespread over San Diego County’s coastal slope but strongly concentrated in the northwest corner.

Almost all black-chinned hummers winter in western Mexico and along the Gulf Coast.

A sundog is a concentrated patch of sunlight occasionally seen about 22° to the left or right of the Sun.

PS normally the water is crystal clear and a gorgeous blue but due to heavy rains it temporarily has this greenish opaque colour.

Males have red concentrated on crown (brighter than throat) with pinkish wash coming into breast; flanks are pale with only a few fine streaks. Females are similar to Purple Finch but with more diffuse face pattern and finer streaks on flanks. Both sexes tend to show more peaked head and longer bill than House and Purple Finch. Found in mountainous regions, mainly in coniferous forests, drifting to lower elevations in winter. Visits feeders. (eBird)

Mahoney Lake, British Columbia, Canada. June 2022.

A small set of pools hold highly concentrated saltwater while the rest of the area appears very dry. The sand beyond the pool is mushy and wet below the surface; I suspect these pools are a low point, and underground saltwater seeps and collects here.

Each time I have approached one of these pools to try and shoot from within, I sink to my calves and retreat.

The reddish hue is caused by Halophilic Bacteria that thrive in 20–25% salinity. Seawater has a salinity of 3-4%

Lifer! We had to find this bird by ourselves since we had left the tour thanks to covid. The light was waning but I managed to catch this shot :-)

The specialists among you will wonder why I am handling two different concentrated silver nitrate solutions. Here is the reason. If a higher amount of an aqueous solution is added to the mixture of ammonium iron (III) oxalate and silver nitrate in order to change the colour, the coating solution will be diluted, which can be compensated by a slightly higher amount of oxalate and a stronger solution of silver nitrate. I indicate the amount of the two main ingredients in millilitres, additives with the number of drops. 15-16 drops of citric acid correspond to about one millilitre. In this print, I wanted to increase the amount of citric acid to 8 drops (i.e. about half a millilitre). So for two prints of this size (14x28cm) you need: 2.25ml amferrioxalate + 16 drops citric acid 50% + 2ml silver nitrate 15% (instead of 10%).

As we left camp before sunrise, we saw two hot air balloons rise above the desert as the sun rose. While I concentrated on photos of the sunrise, Ruby used my phone to take shots of the balloons. It took some work to rescue this photo; it scrubbed up well in the end thanks to the magic of Photoshop.

For those who are interested, an extract from this day's Journal.

"I was awake at 3 this morning and didn't get back to sleep. An early breakfast and on the road to Sousousvlei before sunrise. Along the way we saw two hot air balloons rise above the desert, way off in the distance. I so wanted to be on one of them; perhaps tomorrow, I thought.

We drove for about half an hour to a locked private gate that connected Kulala Game Reserve to Namib-Naukluft National Park . From there it was a short drive to a paved road connecting Sesriem to Deadvlei, beyond Deadvlei the road became tracks in the sand, all leading to Sousousvlei, a vast salt pan and waterhole at the foot of a massive red sand dune.

The road to Deadvlei was flanked by towering sand dunes that created a stunning landscape. This was an incredibly beautiful place, I had Ruby stop many times while I took photos of this amazing place. When we reached Deadvlei I declined to do the 3km return walk through sand dunes to see Deadvlei.

Deadvlei is a clay pan characterized by dark, dead camel thorn trees contrasted against the white pan floor. The pan was formed when the Tsauchab River flooded and the abundance of water allowed camel thorn trees to grow. Over time the climate changed and the sand dunes encroached on the pan, blocking the river from reaching the area. The trees are estimated to be around 900 years old, however they have not decomposed due to the dry climate.

I sensed some tension from Ruby at my decision to skip the walk to Deadvlei, but I had to make a realistic decision and knew such a walk through sand would not be possible for me. Advancing old age sometimes limits us and one needs to be realistic."

Mahoney Lake, British Columbia, Canada. June 2022.

Pools of heavily concentrated halophilic bacteria have dried up under the intense summer heat - they will stay dormant until water arrives and then kick back to life.

While this area looks dry, it's not. As I was shooting this, I moved slightly to the right, and my leg sank to my calf. No swimming or wading in these pools.

Here You see a solo artist performing in front of the concentrated chorus in its background. Who of You doesn't know the music of the forest ? Any woodland has its own sound what is changing constantly during the year and even during the day. Here I’m not only talking about the birds. They are only one of countless instruments in the symphony orchestra. There is also the wind in the leafs, the rustling of small animals at the ground, the creaking of the trees, the buzzing of the passing insects and many many more. Go and take a seat inside of a forest. Close Your eyes and try to pick out all the different instruments. It is fascinating and very relaxing as well.

Well it’s the first to shot a squirrel. They always move so fast and hard to capture, but this time I’m happy to have a capture of it.

I was able to observe this kingfisher in the late afternoon. He sat motionless on the branch and looked at the surface of a lake. I almost thought he was taking a nap, but then he suddenly shot down to prey.

J'ai pu observer ce martin pêcheur en fin d'après-midi. Il s'assit immobile sur la branche et regarda la surface d'un lac. J'ai presque cru qu'il faisait une sieste, mais ensuite il s'est soudainement abattu sur sa proie.

About 4500 brown noddies nest on nearby Bush Key. Their nesting area is protected and off limits to trespass. They share that space with 80,000 sooty terns. All these birds are constantly flying over and around Garden Key as they feast on all the small baitfish concentrated here. What a wonderful sight to watch!

Concentrated all its Power

To show its vibrant Colour

For my Eyes and Soul a Delight

And for the Flower a Matter of Pride

But it fears the slightest Frost

Cause then it will be lost ….

Sometimes you are so concentrated on shooting a subject that it is easy to miss a lot of action around. I was trying to capture the butterfly and I didn't notice all the other bugs in the flower, nor the flying wasp.

----

Eyes concentrated on prey on the ground, a fox leaps towards the camera in search of food. Being out at the golden hour and finding wildlife, is the photographers dream.

Winter is here in Alaska, the days are shorter, soon, we will be in 24 hours of darkness, no more golden hours until next March.

So good to be back folks as I needed a new computer and my Mac should keep me going for awhile.

*Working Towards a Better World

President Barack Obama is in Hiroshima, Japan today. He is the first sitting U.S. president to visit, Hiroshima Japan and said that "mankind possessed the means to destroy itself". Unfortunately, I am afraid that the way things are going presently this is quite possible, he also called for "Moral Revolution" and I personally, join him in that call!

More than 120,000 people are still alive having survived the horrors of the atomic bombings in 1945. We must make a worldwide concentrated effort to avoid this ever happening again!

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! xo💜💜

Mainly concentrated in Australia but over time winds have taken it to New Zealand and to islands on the east of Australia. Although very similar to the species Vanessa cardui the Australian one is different enough to be considered a separate species. One of the main differences is the blue colouration at the centre of the four eyespots on its hindwings. Also, it tends to be slightly smaller, rarely exceeding 2 inches across its wings.

Hiking in the Grindelwald First area offers a concentrated dose of alpine grandeur, with picturesque trails leading to iconic, panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. The summer months provide a stunning contrast between the vibrant green massifs of the lower slopes and the jagged rock faces and permanent snow and ice of the towering peaks.

I was just in my room when I saw this kingfisher outside my window... It looked so concentrated !!!

We are very lucky here, in Chennai, cause everyday a couple of kingfishers visit us and stay longer and longer looking at us..

The blurred things we can see on the background are a pink bougainvillea and a Budah statue we have in our garden..
