The steam clock cost double and took two years longer to build than initial estimates. After the unveiling of the clock, it continued to face many problems such as its deafening noise, vandalism, car crashes, off-key chimes, and its inability to keep accurate time. Ultimately the back-up electric motor became the clock’s main driving force and a computerized tune-keeper was added, but these modifications do not seem to have diminished its status as a Gastown icon.

SM City Cebu is a large shopping mall located in Cebu City, Philippines. It is the 4th shopping mall owned and developed by SM Prime Holdings, the country's largest shopping mall owner and developer. It is the company's first shopping mall outside Metro Manila and the 4th largest shopping mall in the Philippines. It has a land area of 11.8 hectares and a gross floor area of 268,611 m2 ( 2,891,300 sq ft ), becoming part of the world's 15 largest shopping malls and making it the 11th largest shopping mall in the world in 2009.

On an average day, more than 100,000 people visit SM City Cebu, with the figure increasing to 140,000 to 150,000 on weekends. Due to Cebu City's position as a transshipment point for the Visayas and Mindanao, and SM City Cebu's location close to the city's port area, the mall attracts a significant number of transient shoppers.

SM City Cebu proves that variety is the spice of life. You can find an array of exciting food choices, from fast food chains to elegant fine dining restaurants. You can also experience retail heaven with its many shops such as Oxygen, Penshoppe, Mango, Topshop, Promod, People Are People, The Body Shop, National Bookstore, Ace Hardware, Toy Kingdom, Toby’s Sport and much more.

The mall first opened in November 1993, and was seen as catering to the low and middle class of shoppers, in contrast to its upmarket competitor, Ayala Centre Cebu which opened a few months later. An expansion wing that particularly targeted upper class customers was added in 2007. As of 2009, the mall has undergone major renovations. Expansion plans with a hotel and convention centre are being developed. More shops are being proposed in 2012.

SM City Cebu is a four-level complex featuring eight cinemas with a total seating capacity of 8,848, a food court, a fully computerized bowling centre, 8,000-square meter amusement centre, and a 2,000-square meter trade hall. Before the addition of the North wing, it had a car park capacity of 1,629.

The North wing expansion, opened in 2007, features two floors of retail stores, restaurants, and cafes. It houses more than 200 tenants and caters to a more upscale clientele. The expansion also added three levels of covered parking, and a one level of roof deck parking.

SM City Cebu, opened on November 27, 1993 with an area of 161,562 m2 (1,739,040 sq ft ). Initially To attract shoppers, Manila-based movie and television stars and entertainers performed free concerts at the mall. Free jeepney rides to the mall were offered to fulfil the lack of available public transportation.

Construction on SM City Cebu's expansion building, dubbed the North wing, began in March 2006. The expansion, which was developed at a cost of Peso’s 1.3 billion ( US$30.5 million ), was built on the parking lot to the north of the existing building, temporarily decreasing the number of parking spaces by more than 30%. The North wing was started in April 2007, and opened in November 2007, featuring spacious hallways catering to the leisure market and upper class customers, while the existing mall, re dubbed as the South wing, is targeted for those who love the hustle and bustle. It increased the total gross floor area of SM City Cebu by 107,049 m2 ( 1,152,270 sq ft ), for a total of 268,611 m2

( 2,891,300 sq ft ).

IMAX ~ In early 2008, SM Prime Holdings signed a deal with IMAX Corporation for the opening of additional IMAX theatres, following the success of the country's first IMAX theatre at SM Mall of Asia. The IMAX theatre planned for SM City Cebu will replace cinema four screens. It will feature clearer picture quality due to its use of a digital projector rather than a film projector. A budget of Peso’s100-million ( $2.4 million ) was allotted for the renovation and was opened to the public last July 9, 2010 with James Cameron's Avatar in 3D

Someone I worked with who was an A&P veteran gave me some of these old A&P IBM order cards, they were from A&P's first computerized ordering system begun around 1970. He couldn't remember how they filled them out but that each page in an order book corresponded to a card and the completed cards were sent to a processing center. He said store 59 was either Westfield Ave. Moorestown or the first Marlton A&P.

The Pulse Front is a light "show" held at the Toronto Harbourfront Center for a limited time. Originally displayed as part of the Illuminato festival, it has been extended, probably by the same length as the cabaret show.

Consisting of a number of computerized flood lights that tear through the night sky, it revolves around a set program eventually at one point crossing paths in the center. Quite an interesting piece of work.

This is a rare tumor. The feature that makes it rare is its localization on the surface of a bone. It can invade the cortex and even medulla. Histology is similar to conventional osteosarcoma, which involves the medulla of the bone. This example was entirely osteoblastic on the biopsy samples. The treatment options are the same since this lesion behaves the same as the conventional one.

Times Square, New York City, New Years Eve Ball Drop, 2012 - 2013

The Times Square Ball is a time ball located atop the One Times Square building in New York City, primarily utilized as part of New Year's Eve celebrations held in Times Square. Yearly at 11:59 p.m. EST on December 31, the ball is lowered 77 feet (23 m) down a specially designed flagpole, resting on the midnight to signal the start of the new year. The first ball drop in Times Square took place on December 31, 1907, and has been held annually since (except in 1942 and 1943 in observance of wartime blackouts). The ball's design has also been updated over the years to reflect new advances in technologies—its original design utilized 100 incandescent light bulbs, iron, and wood in its construction, while its current incarnation features a computerized LED lighting system and an outer surface consisting of triangle-shaped crystal panels. As of 2009, the ball is also displayed atop One Times Square year-round and is removed only for general maintenance.

The Times Square ball drop is one of the best-known New Year's celebrations internationally, attended by at least one million spectators yearly, with an estimated global audience of at least 1 billion. The prevalence of the Times Square ball drop has also inspired other similar "drops" held locally in other cities and towns around the world.

Bangladesh Railway (BR) started its journey in this portion of the sub-continent 142 years ago. Historically Bangladesh owned the Railway network, which was a part of the sub-continent. BR has recently introduced train related information using IVR (Interactive Voice Response) system through Mobile Phone and has taken initiative for computerization of pay roll, asset management, accounting, inventory control etc. which are the steps towards the implementation of Digital Bangladesh.

In Bangladesh, due to the huge population in the country, an inadequate number of seats on the local trains, and punishing poverty, some people are forced to borrow a ride now and then. Some are so poor that they cant buy ticket even. They ride on the roof top as well as between the carriages of Train or seat in floor between two carriages, canteen, beside door area every where.

An original counted thread embroidery piece. Cotton thread on canvas. Finished piece is approximately 6x9 inches.

Two news stories from NPR were the inspiration for this piece. The first was story about graduating seniors and the annual list of things that this graduating class has or has not experienced. Seniors that graduated this year have always had computers and cell phones, they have never had cassette tapes or film cameras and so on. The very next story was about the last few missions of the Space Shuttle and how the shuttles were soon to be retired. Those two thoughts came together and I realised that very soon that list would include "The students graduating this year have never seen a space shuttle launch." What a sad thought!

This piece tells that story. I imagine a future student typing in a search to their computerized something and coming up with this information about the Enterprise Shuttle OV-101 and the Space Shuttle Missions.

September 28, 2014, we joined with a group of some 30 other Old Cemeteries Society of Victoria (OCSV) enthusiasts to learn about Pioneer Farmers of Saanich, BC, from OCSV President, Dr. Sylvia Van Kirk.. More than a century ago farming was a major activity in Gordon Head, the Saanich Peninsula and other outlying areas. Today’s first-time tour will visit graves of pioneer farmers and those connected with them.

The OCSV is dedicated to researching, preserving and encouraging the appreciation of Victoria's heritage cemeteries. Their members are involved in many volunteer activities, mainly at Ross Bay Cemetery (RBC). Cataloging, cleaning and restoring monuments, computerizing burial records, combating vandalism, conducting historical research and giving walking, history tours.

Dr. van Kirk included our family gravesite in her RBC tour and we have today's photo-to-prove-it. Thank you on behalf of the Irvine Family Genealogical Group (IFGG) to the OSCV for powerwashing the Laing/Irvine burial plot which has been here for over 132 years.

John and Jessie Irvine's granddaughter, Elizabeth Jessie Laing, died March 24, 1882 (at age 6yrs4mon.) and was buried in the plot initially purchased for the grandparents. John Irvine was interred here in 1906 and his wife, Jessie, the following year. Hence, Laing/Irvine burial plot.

Maps had to be made and all roads marked for a more reliable system for ambulance drivers. In past years, people from the area relied on landmarks and older buildings for directions. In regard to ever expanding 911 services and fire stations, directions and map books paved the way for quicker response times. There were no regulations on how long it took an ambulance to respond to a call. With advancements in medical research, it has become very import to get to patients with significant cardiac events, stokes, and trauma in record time. Only taking approx 4 to 6 min for the brain to become damaged by lack of oxygen, you can see my point. The state of Georgia implemented a response time of 10 min to an emergency call. For ages 1-35, Trauma is the leading cause of death. The service I work for has a contract with the county to retain certain criteria for response times. Our service has also built outer lying sub stations in order to decrease our response times for the county. Global tracking System is an enhanced systems that tracks all the ambulances and their routes. Our dispatcher monitors the GPS and that allows the dispatcher to pick the closest appropriate unit when emergency calls come in. This has been instrumental in lowering our response times and increasing the survivability of our patients. Our service produces response time reports over a monthly basis. After the implementation of the gps system and computer aided drafting dispatch systems we have shown a slight decrease in responding time. Our time has cut down by 1-2 minutes. A study was done is Mississippi in 1994. Paramedics would carry a back pack that contained a satellite transceiver and a large folding antenna. They would be able communicate with the hospitals via a advanced communications satellite (ACTS) that NASA has put in place in the early 60’s to 70’s. The outcome was grim. The lengthy time and bulk deemed it inappropriate for EMS use. Our service is fixing to change GPS systems. Verizon wireless has offered our service a plan in which cell phones will relay location information to a computer in dispatch and update the ambulance location every thirty seconds. The cell phones will also give all ambulances step by step directions via handheld navigation. With the ever increasing satellites and new technology out, modern emergency services will continue to see improvement

April 2010 Rubber Stamp Chat Challenge

This was my entry for the Viva Las Vegas Stamp challenge in April using only VLV Stamps.

Lucky me I was a winner with this fun cowboy scene!!!

I just loved this bath time cowboy by VLV stamps soooo much that I could not resist using him in the challenge. This scene was created using a combination of rubber stamps, computerized clip art, decorative paper and photography. The floor and ceiling beams are computerized graphics I created myself. I used some scrapbook paper that looked like stucco to create the walls and the sunset in the windows is a photograph of a real sunset. I then glued on some string twine just for some added fun once I had it all elements cut colored and put together.

All the rubber stamped images are by Viva Las Vegas Stamps:

Where Killers Are Out of Style

By SAM ROBERTS

THE lions aren't lying down with the lambs yet at the Bronx Zoo, but New York is becoming an increasingly peaceable kingdom.

With the year more than half over, it appears the number of homicides in the city may fall below 500 for the first time since 1961, when the subway fare was 15 cents and Roger Maris hit 61 home runs. If that happens, this could be the first year in nearly half a century when more New Yorkers kill themselves than are murdered, as well as the first time since then that New York's murder rate, the number of murders per 100,000 people, is lower than that of the nation as a whole. At the peak in 1990, 2,245 murders were committed in New York. Whatever has driven down the murder rate since then - and no one is sure what that is - the drop raises two intriguing questions: Given the dwindling number of victims, who typically is killed? And, considering that even the first family in biblical Eden had a one in four chance of being slain, just how low will human nature let the murder rate go?

Today, random murders are way down: strangers commit just 16 percent of murders, down from 33 percent in 1991 (about 45 random murders were committed through July of this year, compared with 710 in all of 1991). Murders committed during robberies and burglaries have declined, too, to 11 percent today from 16 percent in 1991 (or about 31 deaths so far this year compared with 344 then). Both declines appear to be largely attributable to a greater police presence, fewer guns and the decrease in random violence in the city that came with the waning of the crack epidemic (fewer bystanders are being shot in drug wars; fewer store clerks are being killed in robberies committed by crack addicts).

In general, murder discriminates; you're much more likely to be a victim in New York if you're black and male. The most likely murder candidate is a black man with a criminal record, from the age of 25 to 40, outdoors on a weekend in Brooklyn and confronted by an angry 18- to 24-year-old friend, acquaintance or relative who is a former convict and is wielding a gun.

"If you're not in that group, your chances of being murdered are minimal," Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said.

Joshua Cohen, a senior researcher at Harvard's Center for Risk Analysis, said that a black man is about 36 times more likely to be murdered than a white woman. Last year, New York's 570 murder victims included 327 blacks (277 men and 50 women), 157 Hispanics and 66 whites (14 women). This year, about 11 percent of murder victims have been white.

Homicides are not declining because of some certainty that the police would find the killers. About 40 percent of murders go unsolved, a proportion that has remained pretty much the same for decades. And murder remains the leading cause of death among New Yorkers 15 to 34 years old.

"Can you get away with murder?" Commissioner Kelly said. "Yes, the clearance rate shows it."

Analyses by Eric Monkkonen of the University of California, Los Angeles, found that at least 100 people have been killed in New York City annually since 1898. The toll passed 200 in 1906, 300 in 1920, 400 in 1929, 500 in 1931. The peak in 1990 came at the height of the crack epidemic, when scores of bystanders were killed by stray bullets, and drugs figured in about 40 percent of murders, compared with about 24 percent today.

But if, in 1990, the question was how high the number could go, today the question is how far it can fall.

James Alan Fox, a criminologist at Northeastern University, analyzed the range of murder rates in the nation's 40 biggest cities and adjusted for demographic factors - primarily for race, which correlates with poverty and fragile family structure, both good predictors for crime. His model, based on how murder rates have fluctuated in all the major cities, suggests that the number of murders in New York could range from 2,407 in a very bad year to 385 in a very good one.

Those numbers are statisical abstractions, of course, not irrational flesh-and-blood human beings. In fact, it is possible that murders could fall even below 385. But in a city of eight million souls, in which more than 55,000 violent crimes took place last year, statistics and history, logic and experience, argue that some number murders will inevitably take place, whether committed by calculating criminals, impassioned lovers or a men having an argument in a bar.

"Could it go lower?" said Mr. Fox. " Yes. Is 385 doable? That's pretty low. It would put you at a rate where the only one that would be lower is Honolulu. I don't think it's going to happen. I call it the criminal justice limbo stick. The closer you get to the minimum the harder it is to reach it."

One reason to hope the number of murders will continue to fall is that, armed with an increasingly sophisticated computerized crime database called Compstat, the police are learning more about who gets killed and why, and can try to pre-empt murder.

They have learned, for example, that if they stop enough people for minor offenses, frisk them and impose mandatory sentences for gun possession, word spreads pretty quickly (which may also explain why a growing proportion of murders these days are being committed with knives).

Take complaints of domestic abuse more seriously, and fewer spouses and partners will become homicide victims (a Health Department study found that more than half of murdered women are killed in their homes, a third by their intimate partners). Stake out social clubs on Saturday nights, and you can intervene before a fight becomes fatal.

"It is still possible to reduce the number of murders," said Thomas A. Reppetto, president of the Citizens Crime Commission.

He pointed out that the annual number of murders in Manhattan recently dipped below 100 for the first time since the 19th century. Hardly anybody noticed.

Soaring 332m on its man-made island is the Burj Al Arab, the only seven star hotel (and one of the tallest buildings) of the world. Its Teflon coating is brilliant white during a sunny day, and the computerized lighting gives it an entirely different look at night .Its interior evocates "The Thousand and One Nights" and its guests enjoy a short submarine ride as they walk a take the three-minute 'submarine voyage' from the hotel lobby to the undersea Al Mahara seafood restaurant.

Homographies is an interactive installation featuring robotic fluorescent light fixtures controlled by computerized surveillance systems. As people walk under the piece, the light tubes rotate to create labyrinthine patterns of light that are "paths" or "corridors" between them. In Homographies the "vanishing point" is not architectural, but rather connective, as it is determined by who is there at any given time and varies accordingly. This gives a reconfigurable light-space that is based on flow, on motion, on lines of sight.

Times Square, New York City, New Years Eve Ball Drop, 2013 - 2014

The world's largest computerized facade on the Al Bahr towers in Abu Dhabi

This is a LEGO radiotherapy playset with a medical linear accelerator (LINAC), a CT scanner (computer tomograph) for treatment planning, and a control room for both LINAC and CT scanner.

Belville figures comprise the staff; brick separators receive their treatments - they suffer from diseases that require radiotherapy.

The control room (middle) is manned with a medical physicist, responsible for treatment planning, and an RT nurse at the CT scanner. In addition there is a brick separator on a stretcher waiting for his treatment.

(There is some indication that the staff are somewhat nerdy.)

The LINAC room is on the left side. There are two cameras for patient surveillance.

A shelf contains some masks, a wingboard, and a knee cushion. A radiation-shielding door provides access from the control room. It may be opened and closed.

A brick separator is currently being treated.

The LINAC has an on-board imaging system and a portal vision; both can be deployed. The gantry can be rotated, and the patient table may be swiveled.

The CT room is to the right; another brick separator is being scanned. The patient table is movable.

The Sorlie Bridge that spans the Red River between Grand Forks and East Grand Forks, MN has had LED lighting added to it. The lights are controlled by a computerized device which is placed inside the pumphouse next to the river near the bridge. The color of the lights can be changed easily and several preprogramed color schemes are coordinated with holidays and special events.

This gallery leads from the Homa Hotel's lobby to the dining area.

The framed pieces are unusual for two reasons: first, they depict period European scenes; and second, they're carpets, not oil paintings.

The execution was so superb that I found myself wondering whether the carpets had been produced on a computerized loom.

Alas, there was no one on site to answer questions about the carpets, and I didn't have time to visit the store that had the carpets on display in the hotel.
