This is the stuff under the trackball on an IBM Model M5-1 keyboard. It uses LED and phototransistor pairs along with gear-like disks to sense the motion of the ball. I was going to guess photodiode, but some components are labeled with 'D' and others with 'T'.

To make this all possible, I run the C: Drive and the MadDog off of the integrated IDE controllers on the motherboard, while Drives D: through K: are controlled by two Maxtor ATA133 PCI Local Bus IDE Controller cards with the Promise Technology chip. To power all of these drives, I am running a 600W power supply.
Audio is modest - AC97 built into the Shuttle AK31 Socket A Athlon/Duron motherboard.
AGP2 Video card is an ATI Radeon 9550 with 246MB DDR.

July 13 - You may wonder what this is. Maybe I should explain that I walked around the neighbourhood with my new notebook this afternoon. I was busy checking to see what wireless networks were available. I was happily logged on to my own from here on a nearby church lawn. My balcony is only 30 meters over and ten floors up.
The daily focus of my eJournal and images blog is on text, Here, I want to create something which will emphasize photos. I'll shoot and add an image each day. Doing so will remind me to constantly carry my camera and it'll be a more direct record of current, personal experiences.
