All participants in the Computer Training Program come from our homeless shelters in Newark New Jersey. We have a screening process to determine the client’s eligibility. The duration of the program is one year. During that year the client learns how to repair, refurbish, and recycle computers and electronics. This program has been especially successful with individuals who are more comfortable working with their hands. Each student receives a computer they build themselves; a task no one ever thought they could accomplish. Armed with new skills and confidence many clients do not finish out the year and end up getting jobs and housing. Urban Renewal has hired over a dozen individuals from the program, some becoming teachers at the training center and others finding jobs previously not open to them.
