Butterscotch chips, dark peanut butter cups, semi-sweet chocolate chips, pretzels, pizza flavoured potato chips, regular potato chips, graham cracker crumbs, coffee grounds, oats.

It's almost done. If this batch looks a little bloated to you, it is! I usually open the container during sunny days to dry the batch since I do not have drainage holes. But one time I forgot to close it and the next morning it was filled with rain water! Arrggg. So there is still decay going on because every day air bubbles are formed as part of the decayed process and pushes the lighter samples up. I try to mix this batch as soon as possible. Eventually this will dry down and it can be sieved and used! Ahhh...compost magic.

So I guess when Pep$i began green washing their sun chips brand with compostable bags, they meant "compostable*," not compostable. This is after a month and a half in a regularly rotated Envirocycle composter. I'll check again in another few months.

I know kitchen scraps are not a pretty thing to look at, but so important for the compost bin.

Composter design

We built this compost bin over the weekend using instructions from Lowe's ( www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=howTo&p=LawnGarden/com... ). It has a hinged lid, removable slats in the front, and ventilated side panels.

This photo shows it in action, decomposing in the left container.

Garden rubbish form the York green bins is turned into good quality compost which can be sold or used to cover former landfill areas.

Here's the latest in a series of screens I've built to screen my compost. This one fits totally over the top of the wheel barrow (so no unsifted material get in). Uncomposted material get thrown off, the fine stuff goes in the wheel barrow, the slightly coarser stuff goes into the 'muck bucket'.

Ok, here is my attempt at kitchen composting. Hopefully I am doing it right. Saving kitchen scraps- I know the list of what not to add. I am adding shredded paper and a sprinkling of potting soil. Sound ok?
