Level of compost extract pumped into a sprayer. The extractor uses water and air to concentrate living biology in compost into liquid that can be used in sprayers, seeders, and other equipment to jump start soil biology. Shawn Preputin, Larry Johnson, and Alec McIntosh, farmers, create compost extract that is applied to their crop fields to bolster soil microbes and improve soil health. Hill County, MT; June 2022

Diogene, Vitra Campus, Weil am Rhein, Germany - Renzo Piano Building Workshop

Diogene is not an emergency accommodation, but a voluntary place of retreat. Today’s demand for sustainability forces us to minimize our ecological footprint. With a gross floor area of 2.5 x 3 m (8 x 9 ft) when fully assembled and furnished, Diogene can be loaded onto a truck and transported anywhere. It is designed to function in various climate conditions independent of the existing infrastructure.

The envelope is composed of a wooden structure, with high performance vacuum insulation and triple glazing. While Diogene’s exterior corresponds to the image of a simple house, it is in truth an intelligent dwelling, equipped with various installations and technical systems that are necessary to guarantee its self-sufficiency. The houses energy and water autonomy strategies include: a photovoltaic module, solar collector modules, a rainwater collection system, a composting toilet, as well as natural ventilation, with the possibility to recover heat in a small air handling unit. In order to meet the water demand, water reuse is possible.

The house and furnishings form a single unit and are constructed from wood, a renewable building material with a warm character. For durable weather protection, the exterior is coated with 2mm aluminum paneling. The front part serves as a living room: on one side, there is a pull-out sofa; on the other, a folding table under the window. A shower, toilet, and kitchen can be found behind the partition. Diogene is equipped with everything needed for living.

This little mushroom popped up in our secondary compost pile. Not sure what kind it is, but it definitely looks like a fairy belongs under it.

La compost toilet è una zona in cui si raccolgono le feci umane per produrre compost derivato dalla fermentazione, utile in questo caso a "nutrire " gli alberi circostanti.

Garden Organic Ryton's compost heap

This is our first try! We can't really have a compost pile, so this is more our speed. We just dug trenches in the garden, poured in the gloop, and covered it with soil. Soon it will all be rich, brown, tomato-growing dirt.

This particular batch is leavings from brussels sprouts, sweet potato, edamame, tomato, cherries, and a whole lot of coffee grounds, all mixed with water. I'd been saving bits in the fridge until we had enough for a full batch.

These are our compost and mulch piles that we are using in the orchard and vegetable garden.

You need 5 pallets of the same size, an open box (flat chisel), a mass and that's it! On the front, this is a board that can be found in supermarkets. I reused the nails from pallets to assemble the all.

There are 2 cans because I am a LAZY composter! Once you fill one of them up, you start filling up the 2nd one. By the time the 2nd one's full, the 1st has turned into lovely compost without any extra effort on your part. Or, at least, that's the theory.

I am a bit behind on the harvesting and so we have an overflowing bin and a few bags full ready to start a new bin.

Transferring our compost to a new bin on Jon's day off (also known as the National Trusts Great Green Leap Day). This heap was started in March 2007.

The last lot of compost has been in the middle bin for ages.I think i first made the heap at Christmas time, but it did not heat up and rot, so i had to re-build and water the heap in spring.

It has rotted quite well now and is starting to get worms in it.

Its time to turn it into the bin on the left.

We have tried to grow pumpkins and they have always failed. However, we have had major successes with rogue pumpkins planted by no one! they have come up all over the lawn without warning or provocation.
