Here's the first donation to the compost pocket. Thanks, Willy!!

This is our second compost pile of 2010. May 15

Mulched leaves and grass. Couple bags of apples thrown in for sweetness.

My winter composting bin early on New Years morning (during a huge snow storm). I'm a composting fanatic - what can I say?

The compost is a little aerobic right now, which is the reason we wanted to have Gary turn it with the front loader. Turning it allows air to enter the mix which helps accelerate the composting process.

We clean out the chicken coop weekly and compost the hay and droppings, turning it once a month or so. The chicken manure makes it compost very quickly, resulting in the dark humus you can see at the far end of the compost bin.

For our Earth Day Seed Swap, we made a batch of compost tea. We save kitchen scraps, then stuffed them down into a pantyhose leg. The pantyhose then went into a 5 gallon bucket, which was filled with water.

We set it under the aquarium and ran a hose from the air pump into the bucket. This gets it brewing. Within 24-48 hours you've got a wonderful compost tea to be poured onto your plants.

Both pumps from Market Weighton Fire Station attended.

This system uses a small amount of water and compost is the end result, saving water, saving the energy of treating wastewater, and eliminating nutrient release into the watershed.

Volunteers and gardeners helped fix the bottom of the compost bin and leveling the ground to better support the bin.

Several loads of leaves, grass and plants. Threw it all into a windrow to be mixed with a front end loader. Mistake #1, didn't add moisture as I built it. Mistake #2, put it where I didn't have a ready water supply.

Double door at end, fill through top door and take the bottom one off to empty.

My daughter, Racheal discovered the Lomi Compost System and bought one for me. She's used hers and is very impressed how fast it works on all sorts of food scraps. I will use mine once it gets colder outside since we throw our veggie scraps into the big compost pile behind the Hoop House. This thing can produce compost in 18 hours. Amazing.

They make a lot of prepared foods here as well as selling fruits and veggies, this is how they get all their scraps to the giant compost pile!

After unsuccessfully trying to sort out the compost from the worms outside, I decided to just leave half alone and feed the other half (left). This way the worms will slowly migrate over and just leave the compost -- I hope.

Last of the yard waste material spread out and worked in. Hopefully this will be decomposed enough by spring to plant into.
