ℹ️ Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 30 in E major, Op. 109, composed in 1820, is the third-to-last of his piano sonatas. In it, after the huge Hammerklavier Sonata, Op. 106, Beethoven returns to a smaller scale and a more intimate character. It is dedicated to Maximiliane Brentano, the daughter of Beethoven's long-standing friend Antonie Brentano, for whom Beethoven had already composed the short Piano Trio in B♭ major WoO 39 in 1812. Musically, the work is characterised by a free and original approach to the traditional sonata form. Its focus is the third movement, a set of variations that interpret its theme in a wide variety of individual ways.

Hendrick ter Brugghen excelled at capturing the rhythms of music in the very way he composed his paintings. In this remarkable image a bagpipe player, seen in strict profile, squeezes the leather bag between his forearms as he blows through the instrument’s pipe and fingers a tune on the chanter. Two large drones, composed of different wooden sections, rest on his bare shoulder. The interlocking rhythms of this ensemble—the broad, round shapes of the musician’s shoulder, beret, and brown bagpipe bag; the flowing patterns of folds in his creamy shirt and taupe robe; the pronounced diagonals of the drones and pipe; and the verticality of the chanter—parallel those of a musical score. Ter Brugghen’s Bagpipe Player should be seen as part of a broad cultural interest in depictions of the idyllic pleasures of country existence, particularly as experienced through music. Ter Brugghen fully embraced this theme in a series of paintings of musicians and singers that capture both the joy and the sensuality of life.
The specific character of this painting, depicting a single, larger-than-life-size musician against a plain grayish ocher background, owes much to the influence of Gerrit van Honthorst (1592–1656) and Dirck van Baburen (c. 1595–1624), Dutch Caravaggist painters who returned to Utrecht from Rome in 1620. They brought with them a new sensuous style appropriate for expressing the idealized concepts of arcadian subject matter that they adapted from paintings by Caravaggio (1571–1610) and his followers. In 1624 Ter Brugghen painted no fewer than five separate compositions devoted to music, featuring not only bagpipe players but also musicians—sometimes singing—who play the lute and the violin. He continued this interest in the years to follow.

Niagara Falls is composed of two major sections separated by Goat Island: Horseshoe Falls, on the Canadian side of the border and American Falls on the United States side. The smaller Bridal Veil Falls also is located on the American side, separated from the main falls by Luna Island. Niagara Falls were formed when glaciers receded at the end of the Wisconsin glaciation (the last ice age), and water from the newly-formed Great Lakes carved a path through the Niagara Escarpment en route to the Atlantic Ocean. While not exceptionally high, Niagara Falls are very wide. More than six million cubic feet of water fall over the crest line every minute in high flow, and almost 4 million cubic feet on average. It is the most powerful waterfall in North America.
Niagara Falls are renowned both for their beauty and as a valuable source of hydroelectric power. Managing the balance between recreational, commercial, and industrial uses has been a challenge for the stewards of the falls since the 1800's.

Sara composed "Rush Patrick's Vision" a contemporary piece for orchestra for the 2007 Made in Vermont Festival tour of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. An accomplished Sara spent time at Johnson State College, and teaches music at the Lowell Elementary school and in the Northeast Kingdom

South facing window, one a pair of windows composed largely of medieval glass with some restoration (the coloured borders appear to be Victorian, along with a third window which appears to be more thoroughly renewed).
Woodhouse church is dedicated as St Mary in the Elms, a fitting dedication for a church surrounded by trees in its wedge-shaped churchyard (flanked by a busy main road and the quieter lane from which its entrance is approached).
This church has a rather unusual appearance which I found surprisingly secular in many ways, certainly the quirkiest of the many church buildings we'd visited on this expedition. The main vessel consists of a nave and chancel with little structural distinction between the two parts and nearly all the windows are straight-headed (and mostly devoid of ornamental flourishes). The most peculiar element of all is the west tower with its steeply-pitched pyramid-roof, looking more like a fanciful focal feature of some Victorian-Gothic mansion, the chimney breaking through its eastern face further reinforcing the oddly domestic feel of the building.
After the strange exterior the interior has a more comfortingly 'church-like' air and has obviously been much restored in the Victorian period (when presumably the north aisle was added). The glazing is mostly of the Victorian period, but in a couple of windows remains some earlier glass in the form of quarries and shields which appear to be of 15th century date.
I liked this church, it's something rather different with its unusual form. I suspect it's normally kept locked outside of services but is worth a look if one gets the chance.

The Nikon D70 is my all-time favorite dSLR. The camera started quick, focused fast, and produced super sharp photos. There is something classic about this earlier entry into the prosumer market that Canon carved out with the Digital Rebel. But Nikon one-upped its rival with a body worthy of professionals as well as enthusiasts.
