At 1,053 feet above the Arkansas River, the Royal Gorge Bridge was completed in only six months with no fatalities. In 1907, the federal government deeded Royal Gorge to the town of Canon City, Colorado for use as a municipal park. To enhance the appeal as a tourist attraction, a bridge was needed to cross the gorge. So, in 1929, Lon Piper undertook the construction of a one-lane toll bridge. Piper designed a bridge 1,260 feet long and 18 feet wide. The bridge is suspended from two 200-ton cables. Each cable has 2,100 strands of No. 9 galvanized wire in it. The floor of the bridge contains 1,000 tons of steel and almost 1,300 wooden planks. It took only $350,000 to build the Royal Gorge Bridge. To replace it today, it would cost over $10 million.

Among the many complexities facing major infrastructure projects in Victoria and other cities will be the need to work through the smaller time windows afforded in locations where environmental controls are prescriptive. A project to replace the bridge had to work around fish migration patterns, particularly for herring, a species enjoyed by local anglers and critical to the food chain of Pacific salmon species. Care had to be taken also to ensure no First Nations archaeological sites were disturbed or, if remains were found, to afford them proper reburial.
Secure data lines and other underground utilities that hide under cities are complex and critical. Cautious exploration and strategies to upgrade or protect those assets needed to be managed.
In jurisdictions unencumbered by such examples of "red tape", construction of new infrastructure may unfold more quickly.

An nice ice halo display appeared as I was driving down I-895 in Baltimore (Harbor Tunnel Thruway). Not quite feature-filled to be classified as "complex," but pretty cool anyway. I shot this through the moon roof.

Scholars gathered together at the Pequot Museum on Friday & Saturday, Oct. 18 & 19, for the 17th Century American Northeast Conference to reexamine the complexity of a changing cultural landscape and the consequences of colonization and warfare.

Government officials and community partners marked the completion of the building’s primary structure with a “topping-off” event.
