Scholars gathered together at the Pequot Museum on Friday & Saturday, Oct. 18 & 19, for the 17th Century American Northeast Conference to reexamine the complexity of a changing cultural landscape and the consequences of colonization and warfare.

My final concept evolved from just complexity to the complexity of things that do not seem complex. The things I wanted to take pictures of were user friendly devices, everyday objects, or things generally not thought of as complex. The reason I wanted to look at complexity is too show how things people perceive as simple really are complex. This would include things like technology that is simple by todays standards but is actually complex.

 

My first photo is of the bottom of a Lego Technic car. This photo shows complexity of things no considered complex because legos are generally thought of a simple locks of plastic kids play with. The layers of gears and axles shows how Lego can be a complex building material. The second photo is of a disassembled Samsung flip phone. This photo shows the complexity because the phone is very simple compared to the smart phones most people have today, but the flip phone is complex once it is seen disassembled. My third photo is of pool balls breaking at the start of a game. This photo shows complexity because the act of hitting the white ball (cue ball) into the triangle is very simple, but the directions the balls go is very complex. My third photo is of a disassembled PS2 controller. This photo shows complexity because a PS2 controller is very simple to use, but the way that the controller functions is complex. This photo was meant to show the complexity of everyday objects. My last photo is of some shark teeth. This photo was intended to show the complexity of the different kinds of shark teeth. People tend to group sharks up into a whole and do not recognize the differences from species to species. One frame extracted from audiovisual live performance "Sounds of Complexity", in collaboration with Kinotek. Patches are entirely programmed in VVVV. The sound part of the performance is constituted by the electroencephalographic activity of a person, translated in audible audio spectrum. Such frequencies control in real-time specifical parameters of the visualization.

New set, "Super-Micro Weed Flowers:"

The photographs in my set, "Weed Flower Micros," may appear to be close-ups of regular-sized flowers – they are not!

 

These are micro (macro) photos of tiny little flowers which bloom on ordinary weeds found in my lawn.

 

How tiny? The largest weed flower in the set is only, when measured across its widest part from petal tip to petal tip, 3/4" in diameter (19mm)!

 

Some of these miniscule flowers are so small that the entire blossom you are looking at is 1/4" in diameter (6mm)…or smaller! Again, that’s measuring from petal tip to petal tip across the widest part of the bloom!

 

The smallest part of a weed flower that I have managed to successfully shoot and achieve good detail in is a photo I made of a bud that measured LESS than 1/32" in diameter (0.7mm) across its widest part!

 

For size references I have included a photo of certain flowers and buds next to the head of an ordinary paper match, which dwarfs the blooms and buds.

 

It’s delightful to discover the beauty, complexity, and variety in something so small that it’s easily ignored, taken for granted, dismissed as a pest, or just downright difficult to see with the naked eye.

 

And it’s an even greater delight to realize that this incredible beauty has been growing wild in my lawn, year after year, right under my un-seeing eyes as I’ve repeatedly mown them down with my lawn mower, never realizing the unseen beauty that I was trampling under my feet.

 

I hope you enjoy viewing these as much as I do. I have a lot of fun making them for us to look at!

The complexity and rarity of a Rube Goldberg machine makes it all the more interesting to watch from start to finish. This overcomplicated contraption which ultimately performs a simple task, has turned up in popular commercials, events, movies, and TV shows.

 

At the famous Bryant Park Winter Village in New York City, Bank of America and their partner RED®, wanted to display a unique activation showing that small actions can create a big reaction—bringing us one step closer to ending the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

 

In order to make this idea tangible, Bank of America worked with a well-known marketing agency, Octagon, in hopes to build a Rube Goldberg experience. Octagon reached out to Britten, a creative production company in Traverse City, Michigan, to help bring this concept to life in just one month. The president, Paul Britten, was more than willing to accept this challenge as his background is in architecture.

 

“It took a lot of study on Rube Goldberg and his thinking. We created storyboards of each and every element in the process. Then created three-dimensional models until we were confident that the scale of each component was going to work,” said Paul.

 

The first trigger of the domino effect was to swipe an oversized Bank of America credit card that caused the machine to activate and go through a series of 10 different steps, until it opened up a gift box at the end with a RED® gift inside. The Rube Goldberg was designed to look like old-fashioned toys, built out of plywood, and cut using a MultiCam CNC router.

 

The Rube Goldberg Experience was on display for four days in Bryant Park, and raised thousands of dollars for project RED®. The entire machine was delivered in-person, assembled, tested, and staffed by Britten’s creative team. “We’ve been in business since 1985, originating as a sign company, but today we are really architects of special projects. We help agencies and other creative people bring their creative ideas to life. We only had a month to pull off this project, from the very first phone call until opening day. The kids were thrilled, there is nothing more fun than seeing their smiling faces,” said Paul.

 

Britten is one of the few creative companies that has the resources and manpower to oversee every step of a project like this including the initial concept, site survey, design, production, and final installation.
