We decided to make a night drive from our hotel to the entrance of the golden monkey park. What we hadn't realized was that even though the mountains besides the road are indeed covered with pristine forest, the small farms by the roadside all have domestic dogs and cats, all barking and creeping throughout the night, diminishing any real chances of finding interesting species along the road. We found only a single mammal during a 2-ish hour night drive, and only in the last few minutes before returning to the lodge. But it turned out to be a very interesting and quite a rare one: The complex-toothed flying squirrel. I spotted it through my thermal scope, thinking at first that it was just the moon shining through a tree canopy. But then after a double-take I noticed that angle of the moon was off (and both were showing separately in the thermal scope). I then figured it was a sleeping bird, but I had our driver stop and Deb shined the light on it. She then said it was a squirrel, which surprised me!
We followed it for a couple of minutes, and only when we got back to the hotel, we identified it as this species. Later, based on the few accounts of it on iNaturalist (this would be the 5th), Flickr (this would be the 2nd), etc., I also concluded that it's actually quite rare.
